To block unwanted texts on a Samsung Galaxy, open the conversation in the SMS app you use and block that sender there. The steps depend on whether your phone uses Samsung Messages or Google Messages. These controls block a particular conversation or number; they are not a universal switch for rejecting every text from a number that is not saved in your contacts.
First, check which messaging app handles your texts
Open your messaging app and identify whether it is Samsung Messages or Google Messages before following the steps below. Samsung now directs users to Google Messages: its U.S. support information says Samsung Messages is no longer supported on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later starting July 2026, while devices on Android 11 or earlier are described as unaffected. Samsung separately says Samsung Messages may become removable on One UI 9.0 or later in fall 2026. Support changes and removability are distinct, so the app may not disappear immediately from every phone. Samsung’s app-status and support information is the best place to check current details.

Menu names and feature availability can vary by Galaxy model, software version, and wireless provider. If your screen differs, look for the block action in the conversation or its options menu.
Block a number in Samsung Messages
- Open Samsung Messages and open the unwanted conversation.
- Open the number or conversation menu, then choose Block number or Block. Confirm if prompted. On some versions, you can instead touch and hold the conversation, tap More, and choose Block.
- To review or change blocked numbers, open the Messages menu and go to Settings > Block numbers and spam, if that option is available. Samsung says blocked numbers and messages can be viewed there.
Samsung also documents blocking a particular number from Contacts or the Phone app, but the available route depends on your phone’s software and installed apps. Its support instructions may not match every device exactly.

Block a number in Google Messages
- Open Google Messages and find the conversation in the conversation list.
- Touch and hold the conversation, tap Block, and confirm.
- To review or undo the block, open the profile or options menu and choose Spam & blocked. Select the conversation and tap Unblock if you want messages from that sender again.
These steps follow Google’s instructions for blocking and reporting conversations. Blocking and reporting are separate choices: you can block a sender without reporting the conversation.
Blocking, spam filtering, and reporting are different
- Blocking a sender uses the messaging app to stop or manage messages from a particular number. It does not guarantee that other unwanted texts, including messages from different numbers, will be blocked.
- Reporting spam in Google Messages also blocks the sender and moves the conversation to Spam & blocked. Reporting is optional. Google says a report sends the sender’s phone number to Google; it may also include the last 10 incoming messages to improve spam detection. In group conversations, other participants’ identifiers and message details may be included. A separate spam-reporting conversation may send the sender’s number and most recent text to your mobile carrier. See Google’s explanation of spam reporting for details.
- Reporting to a carrier gives the provider information it can use to tune spam filters and blocking tools. It is a reporting route, not a guarantee the sender will be stopped across all networks.
In the United States, you can forward an unwanted text to 7726 (SPAM) to report it to your wireless provider. The FCC says providers use consumer reports to calibrate spam filters and blocking tools, and the FTC’s 2024 guidance also points consumers to 7726 and in-app reporting. This short code is U.S.-specific; do not assume it works in other countries.

Does Samsung have a setting to block every unsaved number?
The cited Samsung instructions cover blocking a particular conversation or number. They do not establish a universal Samsung Messages setting that automatically blocks every text from a number not saved in Contacts. “Unknown number” can mean an unsaved contact, a hidden caller ID, or simply a sender you do not recognize; the available blocking steps here apply to a specific conversation or number.

Turning it on should not be treated as a way to block messages from every unsaved number. For a suspicious message, avoid replying. Use the app’s block control, and report it through the app or—if you are in the United States—your carrier’s 7726 service. For a recognized, legitimate business text, use its official unsubscribe option if you no longer want those messages.
