That history can feel like repeated losses, but the available record does not document three separate shutdowns of the same feature.
What Google said about removing location reminders
Google has described a broader move to bring to-dos together in Tasks. It has not publicly identified a specific reason for removing the location trigger itself. The official statements support a conclusion about consolidation, not a claim that location reminders were removed because of low usage, privacy concerns, technical problems or another particular cause.

In September 2022, Google said it would simplify task management by migrating Assistant and Calendar reminders to Tasks, so people could view and manage to-dos in one place. In April 2024, Google described the Keep reminders migration as making Tasks “the single solution for managing your to-dos across Workspace.” Those explanations describe where reminders were going; they do not say why arrival-at-a-place alerts were discontinued. Google’s 2022 Tasks announcement and its 2024 Keep announcement are the relevant statements.
What happened, and when
- June 2022: Assistant location reminders were reported as going away. 9to5Google reported that Google’s reminder page displayed a notice that users would soon no longer be able to set reminders at locations. The quoted notice said users could still create reminders for a time and set location-based routines; it did not provide a removal date. The report documents the notice, rather than a detailed explanation from Google.
- September 2022: Assistant and Calendar reminders were set to move into Tasks. Google’s announcement focused on bringing to-dos into one place. It described Assistant reminders with dates or times and notifications when they were due. It did not say that this migration was the reason location triggers were removed.
- April 2024: Google announced a Keep reminders migration. Google said Keep reminders would automatically save to Tasks over the following year. At the time, the announcement described Keep as supporting time- or location-based reminders. Google framed the change as a single solution for to-dos across Workspace.
- Current Keep guidance: location-based reminders are no longer available. Google says Keep location reminders can no longer be created or received. Details about a migrated reminder’s location may remain in its task description, but that information does not trigger an alert when you arrive. Google’s Keep help page explains the current limitation.
Does “three times” mean Google removed the feature three times?
Not according to the announcements documented here. The sequence includes a reported Assistant change, a migration of Assistant and Calendar reminders into Tasks, and a later Keep migration. These are related changes across Google products, but the sources do not establish three separately announced removals of the same location-reminder feature. “Three times” can describe how repeated changes felt to a user; it should not be read as a verified count of shutdowns.

Did Google say location reminders were underused?
No source in this record ties underuse to the removal of location reminders. In January 2024, Google said it was removing some “underutilized features” in Assistant as part of a separate set of changes. That general statement does not identify location reminders as one of those features or explain the 2022 notice. Google’s January 2024 post should not be treated as a specific explanation for this feature’s disappearance.
What can you use now?
Timed reminders and notifications
Google’s current guidance supports timed reminders. For mobile notifications, Google says Keep reminders now come through Calendar or Tasks; its Keep instructions describe setting a time-based reminder. See Google Keep’s reminder instructions and Google Tasks help for the documented workflows.

Saved location details are not a location alert
If a migrated Keep reminder includes location information, Google says it may appear in the task description. That can preserve context, but it will not recreate a notification triggered by arriving at a place. Google’s current Keep guidance does not offer a way to create or receive location-based reminders.

Google’s documentation establishes the direction of travel: consolidate to-dos in Tasks and route mobile reminder notifications through Calendar or Tasks. It does not establish a feature-specific rationale for dropping location triggers. Google Help separately notes that location history may inform some personalized Assistant suggestions, but that does not connect location privacy to the reminder change. Google’s Assistant location guidance is not evidence of a privacy rationale for this discontinuation.
