On other Android devices, including older Pixels, Google’s help documentation does not list the feature, so it should not be assumed to work. Offline use also depends on downloading the right language pack while you still have an internet connection.
Which phones support offline Live Translate
Google’s Translate Help page for Android says: “Important: This feature is currently only available for Pixel 9, 10, and 11 users.” The eligible devices are therefore Pixel 9, Pixel 10, and Pixel 11 models. The page does not name any other Android phone, and it does not describe the feature as available on every Pixel. If your phone is a Pixel 8 or earlier, or a non-Pixel Android device, Google’s documentation does not establish offline Live Translate for it.

Which language pairs work offline
Google lists ten offline pairs. Each one pairs English with another language:
Recommended Free Tools
- English and Italian
- English and Spanish
- English and French
- English and German
- English and Portuguese
- English and Hindi
- English and Russian
- English and Swedish
- English and Japanese
- English and Indonesian (Bahasa)
A conversation between two non-English languages, such as Spanish and French, is not among the listed pairs. Do not assume that any combination of the ten languages works offline.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
How to set up offline Live Translate before you travel
Setup has to happen while the phone is online. The steps below follow the workflow described in Google’s help page.
- Confirm the phone. Check that the device is a Pixel 9, Pixel 10, or Pixel 11.
- Confirm the pair. Make sure your conversation is one of the English pairs listed above.
- Open the language picker. In the Google Translate app, open the language picker and look for the languages marked for live and text translation.
- Download the language. Download the language you need from the picker while connected to the internet.
- Confirm it shows as downloaded. Check that the language appears as downloaded before you lose connectivity. Do not rely on it offline until you have seen this status.
The same picker is where you delete a downloaded language if you need the storage back. Google’s general Android guidance on offline packs also covers updating, upgrading, and removing downloaded packs, so check for updates before a trip if a pack has been installed for a long time.
Rank #2
- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers

How offline Live Translate differs from other translation features
Several Google translation features have similar names, and their device rules are different. The table below separates them.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Feature | What Google documents | Device or access requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Offline Live Translate (Google Translate app, speech-to-speech) | Offline conversation for the ten English pairs listed above, after downloading the language | Pixel 9, Pixel 10, or Pixel 11 only |
| Ordinary offline translation (Google Translate app) | Translation without an internet connection after downloading supported language packs, including camera translation for supported cases | Android device with the packs downloaded. This guidance does not establish eligibility for offline Live Translate. |
| Pixel built-in text and app translation | Translation of text and apps on the phone | Pixel 6 and later |
| Pixel phone-call translation | Translation during phone calls | Pixel 10 and later; subject to country, language, and compatible-app restrictions |
| Pixel media translation | Translation of media content | Pixel 11 series phones |
The practical point is that a phone can support one of these features without supporting offline Live Translate. A Pixel 6, for example, can use built-in text and app translation, but that does not make it eligible for the offline speech-to-speech feature in the Translate app.

Headphones are optional. Google describes listening through headphones, and it also says translations can play through the phone’s speakers. Choose whichever works for the conversation; the choice does not affect whether the feature is available.
Pixel Buds can be used as a listening accessory, but Google’s Pixel Buds workflow has its own compatibility and internet requirements. Do not assume Pixel Buds are required, or that they will work offline, simply because you are using offline Live Translate.

What this guidance does and does not establish
- Device and language support is current only as listed. Google’s Translate Help page shows no publication date, so the list of Pixel models and language pairs may change. Check the help page again before a trip.
- Availability is not accuracy. The documentation covers which phones and language pairs are supported and how to set them up. It does not promise that every offline translation will be correct, especially in noisy settings or with technical vocabulary.
- This guide is based on Google’s documentation. It does not rely on hands-on testing of each phone or language pair.
