Under Google Search Central’s documentation retrieved October 20, 2026, it is intended for pages that contain JobPosting structured data or a BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject. The documented default quotas are 200 publish requests per project per day, 180 metadata requests per project per minute, and 380 total requests per project per minute. A successful response means Google may recrawl soon; it does not guarantee crawling, indexing, rich-result eligibility, or ranking.
What the Indexing API is—and what it is not
The Indexing API sends Google a lifecycle notification for an eligible URL. You notify Google when a supported page is new or has materially changed, or when it has been removed. Google then decides whether and when to recrawl the page. The API does not insert a URL directly into the index and does not replace technical SEO fundamentals such as crawlable HTML, canonical URLs, valid structured data, internal links, and sitemaps.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Google’s published eligibility statement is deliberately narrow: “The Indexing API can only be used to crawl pages with either JobPosting or BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject.” Ordinary articles, product pages, category pages, home pages, and generic livestream pages without the required structured-data combination are outside the documented use case. Sending unsupported URLs can consume quota without creating an indexing benefit.
Two supported page patterns
- JobPosting: a dedicated page describing one specific job opening.
- BroadcastEvent: a live or scheduled broadcast represented inside a
VideoObject. TheBroadcastEventobject by itself is not the documented eligibility condition; it must be nested in aVideoObject.
The same authentication, quota, batching, monitoring, and anti-abuse requirements apply to both patterns.

Current documented quotas
Google lists these default per-project limits in its 2026 Search Central documentation. They are project-level quotas, not allowances for each URL or each service account.
| Quota | Default limit | What it controls | Reset or measurement |
|---|---|---|---|
| DefaultPublishRequestsPerDayPerProject | 200 | Publish notifications, including URL_UPDATED and URL_DELETED |
Daily quota resets at midnight Pacific Time |
| DefaultMetadataRequestsPerMinutePerProject | 180 | Requests that read notification metadata for URLs | Rolling per-minute project limit as enforced by Google |
| DefaultRequestsPerMinutePerProject | 380 | Total requests per minute for the project | Per-minute project limit |
The daily publish number is a ceiling on URL notifications, not a promise that 200 URLs will be crawled or indexed. A single page notified repeatedly uses another publish unit each time. Metadata calls do not create additional daily publish capacity, but they still count toward the minute-based metadata and total-request limits.
What happens when you need more quota
Google accepts quota-increase requests through its quota system. Approval is not automatic: Google says quota may increase or decrease based on document quality. Treat an increase as an operational decision, not as a way to submit low-quality or unsupported URLs at scale. Before requesting more capacity, measure your actual update volume, remove duplicate notifications, and confirm that every submitted page is eligible and technically sound.

URL_UPDATED
Use URL_UPDATED when an eligible page is newly published or when information on the page has changed. For a job, that can include a changed closing date, compensation details, location, employment type, or other material content. For a broadcast, it can include a changed start time, event status, title, or video availability. Notify only after the public page and its structured data have been updated, so Googlebot does not receive a signal for content that is not yet visible.

URL_DELETED
Use URL_DELETED after an eligible page has genuinely been removed. For a job, this may follow the employer’s decision to close the requisition and remove the page. For a broadcast, it may follow cancellation or permanent removal. A delete notification is not a substitute for returning the correct HTTP status or maintaining accurate structured data; Google still evaluates what it receives when it recrawls.
Notification metadata
The notification-status method reports the last notification Google received for a URL. Use it to audit whether your application sent an update or delete event, to investigate duplicate sends, and to reconcile your internal event log with Google’s acknowledgement. Metadata confirms receipt of a notification, not that the URL was crawled or indexed.
How batching affects limits
An individual publish request contains one fully qualified URL and one notification type. Google also supports multipart batching of up to 100 requests to reduce HTTP connection overhead. Batching changes transport efficiency, not quota consumption: “Quota is counted at the URL level.” A batch containing 100 URL notifications consumes 100 publish units, and each batch part must not exceed 1 MB.
Recommended Free Tools
| Submission style | Maximum URLs in one HTTP operation | Quota charged | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual request | 1 | 1 URL notification | Low-volume, event-driven updates and simpler troubleshooting |
| Multipart batch | Up to 100 | One unit per URL in the batch | Release windows or controlled backfills where connection overhead matters |
Do not interpret a batch as a quota bypass. Keep the batch comfortably below the 1 MB part limit, record each URL’s result, and retry only failed parts. Retrying an entire successful batch can waste the daily allowance.

Prerequisites and a compliant setup
Set up the integration in this order. The exact console labels can change, but the required controls are stable.
- Enable the Indexing API in Google Cloud. Select the project that will own credentials and quota. Keep production and test workloads in separate projects when their volumes or access controls differ.
- Create a service account. Store its credentials in a secret manager, restrict access to the deployment that sends notifications, and rotate keys according to your organization’s policy. Do not place a private key in browser code or a public repository.
- Verify site ownership in Google Search Console. The property must cover the URLs you submit. Verification and API authentication are separate controls: a valid token alone does not prove that your project is authorized for the site.
- Obtain an access token. Your server-side client should request a token with the required Google API scope, cache it until expiry, and refresh it without exposing it to visitors.
- Send JSON requests. Set
Content-Type: application/json. A publish body contains a fully qualifiedurland atypewhose value isURL_UPDATEDorURL_DELETED. - Log every attempt and response. Record the URL, event type, timestamp in UTC, project, HTTP status, response body, retry count, and the page version that triggered the event.
- Monitor notification metadata and quotas. Alert before the daily or per-minute ceilings are exhausted, and investigate repeated failures instead of silently retrying them.
Google states that all submissions undergo spam detection and that attempting to bypass limits with multiple accounts can lead to revoked access. One verified site does not justify distributing the same URLs across projects or identities to obtain more submissions.
JobPosting pages: implementation practices
Use one dedicated page per job
Put JobPosting structured data on a page that describes one job opening. Do not place it on a search-results page, a list of jobs, or a page that combines several requisitions. The visible content and the structured data must describe the same opening. If salary, location, employment type, or another material detail appears in the markup, it should be available to a user in the rendered page under the same conditions.
Keep the page crawlable and canonical
- Return a normal, accessible HTML response to Googlebot rather than requiring an interactive session to reveal the job details.
- Use the page’s preferred canonical URL in the notification, not a tracking, session, or alternate URL.
- Avoid blocking the page with robots rules, authentication, or a temporary outage when you send
URL_UPDATED. - Validate the implementation with Google’s Rich Results Test after publishing and whenever the template changes.
The API notification cannot repair a canonical conflict, blocked crawl, malformed JSON-LD, or a mismatch between visible and structured content. Fix those conditions first, then send the update.

Handle expiration deliberately
When a job closes, set validThrough to a past date when that property is appropriate, and make the page’s status match reality. Depending on your retention policy, remove the page or return an appropriate 404 or 410, or remove the JobPosting markup from a page that remains useful for applicants. Google recommends using the Indexing API for job URL removals because the notification can prompt a sooner recrawl than waiting for a sitemap change alone.
Do not send URL_DELETED for a job that is merely paused if the page remains available and accurately describes an open position. Send URL_UPDATED when the page’s status or material details change, and reserve deletion for an actual removal.
BroadcastEvent and livestream pages
Meet the structured-data condition
A livestream page is eligible only when its BroadcastEvent is embedded in a VideoObject. The fact that a page contains a video player or is called a livestream page does not, by itself, make it eligible. Check the rendered structured data and the visible event information before sending a notification.
Notify the broadcast lifecycle
Send URL_UPDATED when the public page is added or when material event details change, such as the scheduled start time, live status, title, or availability. Send URL_DELETED when the page has been permanently removed. Keep the canonical URL stable across schedule changes so Google receives a coherent history for one event.
Best Value
The API does not guarantee that a broadcast will appear in video features or that a page will be crawled before the stream starts. Build your publication schedule with ordinary crawl discovery, a valid sitemap, and enough lead time for processing; treat the notification as an additional signal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical notification workflow
The following workflow works for both supported page types while keeping quota use predictable.
- Detect a real content event. Trigger on publication, a material field change, or confirmed removal. Do not trigger on every template render, analytics update, or internal database save.
- Render and validate the public URL. Confirm that the URL resolves, the canonical element is correct, the required structured data is present, and visible content agrees with it.
- Choose the lifecycle type. Use
URL_UPDATEDfor a new or changed eligible page andURL_DELETEDafter removal. - Deduplicate. Collapse multiple edits made within a short release window into one notification when the final public state is the only state Google needs to see.
- Budget the quota. Check the project’s remaining daily publish allowance and minute-level request rate before dispatching a large release. Queue non-urgent work instead of flooding the API.
- Send individually or in a batch. Use individual calls when you need straightforward per-event tracing; use multipart batches of no more than 100 when connection overhead is significant.
- Classify the response. Mark each part as acknowledged, retryable, or permanently invalid. Retry transient failures with exponential backoff and a cap; do not retry malformed requests indefinitely.
- Verify asynchronously. Query notification metadata when an audit requires confirmation, then inspect Search Console and server logs for crawl activity. Neither acknowledgement nor a successful HTTP status is an indexing guarantee.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Requests succeed but the page is not indexed | Google accepted the notification, but crawling, quality, canonicalization, or eligibility prevented indexing | Check crawl access, canonical signals, rendered structured data, visible-content agreement, and Search Console coverage; do not assume the API guarantees inclusion |
| Quota exceeded during a release | Duplicate notifications, an oversized backfill, or project-wide traffic from other clients | Deduplicate events, queue work, use batches for transport efficiency, and request a quota review only after documenting legitimate volume |
| Minute limit is reached while daily quota remains | Too many metadata or total requests in a short interval | Throttle workers, cache metadata results, add backoff, and spread non-urgent calls across the minute window |
| Job page is ignored | Markup is on a list page, does not match visible content, is invalid, or the page is blocked | Move markup to a one-job page, reconcile every material field, validate with Rich Results Test, and restore crawlability |
| Livestream notification has no effect | BroadcastEvent is not nested in VideoObject, or the page is not publicly crawlable |
Correct the structured-data hierarchy, test the rendered page, and submit the canonical URL |
| Delete notification does not clear a result immediately | Google still needs to recrawl and process the page | Return the appropriate HTTP status or remove the markup as applicable, keep the URL’s state accurate, and allow processing time |
| Batch request partially fails | One or more parts contain invalid URLs, authentication problems, or malformed JSON | Read each part’s response, fix only the failed items, and retry those items rather than resending successful parts |
Choosing an implementation pattern
| Situation | Recommended pattern | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A single job is published or materially changed | One authenticated URL_UPDATED request after validation |
Low latency and simple audit trail |
| Many jobs are released in one controlled deployment | Multipart batch, capped at 100 requests, with per-part logging | Fewer HTTP connections without changing quota usage |
| A job is permanently removed | Correct page status or markup first, then URL_DELETED |
Aligns the notification with the page Google will recrawl |
| A scheduled broadcast is added | Validate BroadcastEvent inside VideoObject, then send URL_UPDATED |
Meets the documented eligibility condition |
| A site contains ordinary editorial URLs | Use normal crawl-discovery methods instead of the Indexing API | Those URLs are not documented as eligible for this API |
| Quota is consistently insufficient for legitimate eligible volume | Measure usage, remove duplicates, improve document quality, then submit a quota-increase request | Google evaluates quota requests and may adjust limits based on quality |
What a successful response means
Google’s documentation explains that a successful HTTP 200 response means Google may try to recrawl the URL soon. It does not state that Google has crawled the page, accepted its structured data, indexed it, displayed a rich result, or assigned any ranking. Those outcomes depend on crawlability, canonicalization, content quality, structured-data validity, and Google’s normal indexing systems.
Design your monitoring around those distinct stages. Keep an API delivery dashboard for authentication, quota, and response status; use server logs to confirm Googlebot requests; and use Search Console reporting to evaluate indexing and enhancements. Treat each as evidence about a different part of the pipeline rather than as interchangeable success signals.
Quick Recap
Best-practice checklist
- Submit only a dedicated
JobPostingpage or a page withBroadcastEventembedded inVideoObject. - Use the canonical, fully qualified URL.
- Make structured data match what users can see.
- Validate JobPosting markup with Rich Results Test.
- Send
URL_UPDATEDfor new or changed pages andURL_DELETEDafter genuine removal. - Remember the defaults: 200 publish requests per project per day, 180 metadata requests per project per minute, and 380 total requests per project per minute.
- Account for the midnight-Pacific daily reset and project-wide scope.
- Batch no more than 100 requests and remember that quota is charged per URL.
- Throttle workers and retry only transient failures.
- Log every URL, type, response, and retry.
- Never distribute submissions across multiple accounts to evade limits.
- Interpret HTTP 200 as acknowledgement of the notification, not an indexing promise.
