It is limited to pages with eligible JobPosting data or a BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject. You must configure a service account, verify Search Console ownership, obtain approval and quota, and authenticate with OAuth.
A successful request only tells you that Google received the notification. An HTTP 200 response means Google may try to recrawl the URL; it does not promise a crawl time, indexing, or immediate removal.

What the Google Indexing API actually does
The API lets an eligible publisher notify Google when a supported page is published, changed, or deleted. Google can then decide whether to recrawl the URL. This is useful for high-churn job listings and livestream pages, where waiting for a broad site crawl can leave search results out of date.
It does not submit arbitrary pages for instant indexing. The page must meet Google’s structured-data eligibility rule, the request must come from an authenticated project, and the URL must belong to the publisher. Even when every requirement is satisfied, Google controls crawling, indexing, ranking, and removal.

Which pages are eligible?
Job pages
A page can use the API when it contains valid JobPosting structured data describing an actual job listing. Keep the markup synchronized with what a user can see: title, employer, location or remote terms, posting date, and application information should not contradict the page. The API does not make incomplete or misleading structured data acceptable.
Livestream-event pages
Livestream pages qualify through a BroadcastEvent represented inside a VideoObject. The event and video markup must describe the page’s real broadcast. A normal article, product page, category page, or video without the required event relationship is outside the API’s documented scope.
Eligibility checklist
- The URL is owned by the publisher’s verified Search Console property.
- The page contains one of the supported structured-data patterns.
- The update URL is publicly crawlable and returns the intended content to Googlebot.
- The content follows Google’s spam policies.
- The page is not being submitted merely because it is new; it must be an eligible job or livestream page.
Google’s official wording is precise: “The Indexing API can only be used to crawl pages with either JobPosting or BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject.” Treat that as a product boundary, not a suggestion.

Approval is part of operating the API beyond initial experimentation. The onboarding sequence below follows Google’s documented quickstart, while the exact approval form and Cloud Console labels can change.
- Create or select a Google Cloud project. Use a project dedicated to the site or publishing system so its credentials, quota, and logs are easy to audit.
- Enable the Indexing API. The API must be enabled in that project before requests can be sent.
- Create a service account. Generate credentials for your server-side application, protect the private key, and restrict who can use it. Do not put the key in browser JavaScript or a public repository.
- Verify ownership in Search Console. Add the service account as an owner of the relevant property, or grant the access level Google’s setup instructions require. A token alone does not authorize URLs from an unrelated site.
- Request approval and quota. Google evaluates the site and its document quality. Additional quota is not automatic, and Google may raise or lower an approved amount.
- Use the OAuth scope. Requests use
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/indexing. Your application exchanges the service-account credentials for an access token before calling the API. - Validate your publishing workflow. Confirm that your server sends the correct URL, notification type, and JSON content type, and that the URL is crawlable from the public web.
- Monitor usage and policy compliance. Keep notifications tied to genuine content changes. Google warns that creating multiple accounts to evade limits can result in access being revoked.
Google provides the API without a usage charge under its quota and pricing rules. “Free” does not mean unlimited: the project still has daily and per-minute limits, and approval is required for higher capacity.

Sending a URL_UPDATED notification
Use URL_UPDATED when an eligible page is first published or when its job or livestream information changes. The publish endpoint is https://indexing.googleapis.com/v3/urlNotifications:publish.
Each request uses HTTP POST, an OAuth access token, and Content-Type: application/json. The body contains one fully qualified URL and one notification type:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPOST https://indexing.googleapis.com/v3/urlNotifications:publish
Authorization: Bearer ACCESS_TOKEN
Content-Type: application/json
{
"url": "https://www.example.com/jobs/data-engineer-123",
"type": "URL_UPDATED"
}
The URL must be owned by the publisher and crawlable. A batch submission can combine up to 100 requests, but every item still has to meet the same eligibility and ownership rules. Batching reduces request overhead; it does not bypass quota or make Google process every URL.
Send another URL_UPDATED notification when eligible content changes again. For example, changing a job’s closing date or marking a livestream as scheduled is a new state that merits a new notification. Do not repeatedly submit an unchanged URL in the hope of accelerating crawling.
How long does Google take to crawl after a request?
Google does not publish a guaranteed crawl deadline for an Indexing API notification. Its documented behavior is: “An HTTP 200 response means that Google may try to recrawl this URL soon.” The words may and soon are intentional: they describe a possible recrawl attempt, not a service-level time window.

A 200 response therefore confirms acceptance of the notification, not that Google fetched the page, indexed it, displayed it in search, or changed its ranking. Crawling can still be delayed by technical access problems, low-quality or conflicting content, duplicate URLs, or Google’s own scheduling decisions.
You can inspect the notification history at https://indexing.googleapis.com/v3/urlNotifications/metadata?url=ENCODED_URL. Replace ENCODED_URL with the URL-encoded page address and authenticate the request. Google states that this GET result does not tell you when it indexes or removes a URL; it only reports the latest update and removal notifications it received.
Updating content without creating stale results
Use a notification only when the eligible document has actually been published or changed. Keep the canonical URL stable where possible, and make sure the server returns the new content to crawlers as well as users. If the page redirects, requires a login, or serves a different response to Googlebot, the notification cannot fix that underlying problem.
Structured data should change with the page. A job that is no longer accepting applications should not continue to expose active-job markup, and a livestream event should not retain future-event details after it has ended. The API is a signal about page state; it is not a substitute for maintaining accurate HTML and structured data.
Removing a URL correctly
Prepare the page first
Before sending a deletion notification, make the URL genuinely non-available or non-indexable. Google requires one of these conditions:

- The URL returns HTTP 404 (Not Found).
- The URL returns HTTP 410 (Gone).
- The page contains
<meta name="robots" content="noindex">.
Removing a link from your navigation or returning a soft “not found” page is not the same as returning a 404 or 410. Check the actual response and the rendered HTML from an external request.
Send URL_DELETED
After the prerequisite is in place, send a POST to the same publish endpoint with "type": "URL_DELETED":
{
"url": "https://www.example.com/jobs/data-engineer-123",
"type": "URL_DELETED"
}
An HTTP 200 means Google accepted the removal notification and may remove the URL. It is not an immediate-removal guarantee. Search results can persist until Google recrawls and processes the changed page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Default quotas and operational limits
Google’s quota page lists these initial defaults for each project (Google Search Central, accessed in 2026):
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Quota | Initial default | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Publish requests | 200 per day | Per project; the allowance resets at midnight Pacific Time. |
| Metadata requests | 180 per minute | Per project. |
| Total requests | 380 per minute | Per project, covering the API’s request traffic. |
Higher quota requires an approval request. Google can adjust an approved amount up or down based on document quality, so capacity should not be treated as permanent. Plan a queue and retry strategy rather than sending a burst that exhausts the daily allowance.
Best Value
Do not create extra accounts or projects to circumvent a limit. Google explicitly warns that attempts to evade quotas can lead to revocation of access. A clean, documented publisher identity is safer than fragmented credentials.
Indexing API, Search Console, and sitemaps compared
These tools solve different discovery problems. Choose based on page type and the signal you need to send.
| Factor | Indexing API | Search Console request indexing | XML sitemap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligible pages | JobPosting pages and BroadcastEvent pages embedded in a VideoObject. | General pages that meet Google’s normal quality and technical requirements. | General site URLs that you include in a sitemap. |
| Authentication | Cloud project, service account, OAuth scope, Search Console ownership, and Google approval/quota. | Requester must be an owner or full user of the Search Console property. | Site or hosting configuration; no Indexing API service account is required. |
| Notification granularity | One URL per publish item, with update or deletion type; batches can contain up to 100 items. | Manual or interface-driven request for an individual URL. | File-level discovery and change signals, not an immediate per-URL request. |
| Timing language | Google may try to recrawl soon; no promised deadline. | Google decides whether and when to crawl; repeatedly requesting does not make it faster. | Google discovers the sitemap and schedules crawling according to its systems. |
| Quota | Initial defaults are 200 publish requests per day, 180 metadata requests per minute, and 380 total requests per minute per project. | Not stated in the supplied Google figures; the interface can impose its own limits. | Not stated in the supplied Google figures. |
| Does it prove indexing? | No. The response and metadata confirm notification receipt only. | No. A request is not a guarantee of indexing. | No. Inclusion in a sitemap is a discovery hint, not an indexing decision. |
| Best fit | High-churn eligible jobs and livestream events. | Investigating or requesting a small number of ordinary URLs. | Complete, ongoing coverage of a site’s ordinary crawlable pages. |
For pages that do not qualify for the API, maintain a complete sitemap and use Search Console’s URL Inspection request-indexing workflow when an individual URL needs attention. Google says repeatedly requesting the same URL will not make it crawl faster.

What to do when Google still does not index the page
1. Confirm that the page qualifies
Check the structured-data type first. If the page is not a job listing or eligible livestream event, stop sending Indexing API notifications and switch to sitemap and Search Console workflows.
2. Check access and response status
Verify that the URL resolves publicly, is not blocked by robots rules or authentication, and returns the intended status code. For an update, it must be crawlable; for a deletion, it must satisfy the 404, 410, or noindex requirement.
3. Validate the content signal
Make sure the structured data matches visible content, the canonical URL is correct, and the page is not a duplicate or thin placeholder. Fix the document before spending more quota.
4. Inspect notification history
Use the metadata endpoint to confirm whether Google received the latest notification. A missing or old entry points to authentication, URL, or quota problems; a current entry means the notification was received, not that indexing has occurred.
5. Use the general discovery tools
For an otherwise healthy ordinary page, submit or refresh the sitemap and use Search Console’s URL Inspection request-indexing option if you are an owner or full user. Allow Google to make the final crawl and indexing decision rather than issuing duplicate requests.
Quick Recap
Practical operating checklist
- Keep one verified Search Console property and one controlled service account for the publisher.
- Store credentials securely and use the
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/indexingscope. - Send
URL_UPDATEDonly for real publication or content changes. - Send
URL_DELETEDonly after the URL returns 404/410 or serves a noindex directive. - Track daily and per-minute quota, including the midnight Pacific Time reset for publish requests.
- Record the notification response and metadata history separately from your own indexing checks.
- Never interpret a 200 response as a crawl, indexing, ranking, or removal deadline.
