Gemini is the better fit if you want conversational help, image or screen questions, and assistance linked to Google apps. Google Assistant may still suit you better if you rely on a specific older feature—such as Interpreter mode or a particular media provider—that Gemini does not support. But this is increasingly a migration decision, not a lasting choice between two equally available Android defaults: Google announced that removal of Assistant on mobile would begin September 3, 2026, with the rollout expected to take a few weeks. Whether you can still switch depends on your device’s rollout status.
Gemini vs Google Assistant: what’s the practical difference?
Gemini is designed for more conversational, context-rich requests. You can use text, voice, images, or your camera, and ask for help with writing, brainstorming, learning, planning, or questions about what is on your Android screen. Google also describes connections to apps such as Gmail, Maps, and YouTube. Google’s Gemini mobile app task guide outlines supported uses.

Assistant is associated with quick voice actions and familiar integrations. Gemini can use some of those capabilities, but Google’s documentation makes clear that Gemini does not support every Assistant feature. The useful comparison is therefore not simply “new versus old”: it is whether Gemini handles the jobs and services you actually use.

What Gemini can do—and where it may fall short
Conversational and multimodal help
Gemini is the stronger choice when a request needs context or more than a short command: for example, asking it to help shape a message, discuss a topic, or respond to an image. Google also lists image generation and planning with Maps and Flights among mobile app tasks. These features are subject to availability; the documentation does not establish that every task or integration is available to every user.

Connected apps are useful, but not universal
Gemini’s Connected Apps can bring supported Google services and other apps into a request. Depending on the app and account, examples include finding information in Gmail, creating calendar events, playing media, or controlling smart-home devices. Check the connected-app settings and the feature’s availability for your account rather than assuming that every action works in every region. Google explains Connected Apps on Android.
Some Assistant features remain a reason to check first
Google’s Gemini help page identifies features that are not supported, including Interpreter mode and certain podcast, news, radio, and third-party music services. The provider matters: a general ability to play media does not guarantee support for the specific service you use. Does Gemini work when your Android phone is locked?
Yes, for some requests, but a locked phone does not give Gemini unrestricted access to personal information. Google says Gemini can handle general questions, some Maps requests, alarms and timers, media controls, and certain phone controls from the lock screen. Calls and messages without unlocking require you to opt in. Requests involving personal content may still require unlocking, and lock-screen behavior is configurable. Can you switch back to Google Assistant?
It depends on whether Google’s mobile transition has reached your device. Google’s help page documents a switch from Gemini to Assistant in the Gemini app’s profile menu, and a second route through Android Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant app. Menu wording can differ by device. Google also warns that deleting the Gemini app does not by itself remove Gemini as the default assistant. See Google’s instructions for managing Gemini on Android.

However, Google’s August 6, 2026 announcement says mobile Assistant removal would begin September 3 and take a few weeks to reach everyone; after access is removed, switching back will no longer be possible. The two documents describe different stages of availability, so the documented switch steps may not work once your device has moved through the rollout. Check the Gemini app and your phone’s default-assistant setting rather than assuming you can switch back. Google’s transition announcement.
What happens to Android Auto, watches, headphones, and smart speakers?
Google’s transition announcement includes Assistant on mobile and connected experiences affected by that mobile change: paired Wear OS watches, compatible headphones or earbuds, and Android Auto projected from a phone. Google also says cars with Google built-in will continue to have Assistant beyond September 3, 2026, and that the announced mobile change does not affect Google Home or Nest speakers and displays. These are distinct product categories, so a change to a phone’s assistant should not be read as a universal replacement of Assistant on every Google-connected device. Android Auto’s help page says users can talk to Gemini or Google Assistant. Because the mobile rollout was expected to take weeks, availability may differ by user and setup; do not assume every car, phone, or account has completed the transition. Google’s Android Auto guide.

Who can use Gemini on Android?
Gemini availability and features can depend on country, language, device, account type, and settings. Google notes limits for some supervised and work or school account scenarios, and says Android work profiles are not supported for the Gemini mobile app. If you use a managed or supervised account, check eligibility before making it your primary assistant. How to decide which assistant suits you
- List your must-have actions. Include daily voice commands, calls and messages, alarms, media services, navigation, translation, and any smart-home controls.
- Check Gemini’s feature list against that list. Pay special attention to Interpreter mode and the exact podcast, news, radio, or music provider you use. Google’s supported-task and Connected Apps pages are the best place to verify current coverage.
- Check your device’s status before planning a switch back. If Assistant is still available, Google documents the option in the Gemini app’s profile menu or under Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant app. Availability may change as the September 2026 rollout reaches devices.
- Verify account and lock-screen behavior. Confirm that your country, language, account type, and any work-profile restrictions are compatible, then review lock-screen permissions if you want calls or messages without unlocking.
