How to Configure the Stripe Customer Portal for Subscription Management

To let customers manage subscriptions through Stripe, configure the customer portal’s features in the Dashboard, then give customers access either through a Dashboard-provided link or a portal session created by your application. The configuration controls what customers can do; a session opens that portal for a specific Stripe customer. Stripe describes it as a hosted interface for subscription and billing management (Stripe customer portal overview).

Choose what customers can manage

Start by matching the portal’s permissions to your pricing, entitlement and billing policies. Stripe’s Dashboard guide to configuring the customer portal covers subscription changes, cancellations, customer details, payment methods, invoice history and branding. The API exposes corresponding feature controls in its configuration reference; that reference is pinned to a preview API version, so use the version configured for your account and consult the current reference before copying request fields.

Setting Decision to make Why it matters
Plan changes Whether customers can switch plans, and which products or prices are eligible. Controls the destinations customers can select; not every price is necessarily eligible.
Quantity changes Whether customers can adjust quantities, and any limits and proration behavior. Useful for seat-based subscriptions; quantity changes can alter recurring charges and invoice adjustments.
Timing Whether an update takes effect immediately or at the end of the billing period. Determines when the new plan or quantity applies.
Cancellation Whether cancellation is allowed, when it takes effect, and whether to collect a reason. Sets the customer’s cancellation options and can affect access, renewal and invoice adjustments.
Billing details Which customer fields may be edited. Exposes only the self-service fields your workflow needs.
Payment methods and invoices Whether customers may update payment methods and view invoice history. These are separate portal features; check your active settings rather than assuming a documented example’s defaults apply to your account.

Plan and quantity changes

For a good-better-best offering, decide whether customers should be able to switch plans and which prices should appear. For seat-based billing, decide whether they may change quantity. Specify the consequences before enabling either: immediate versus period-end timing, proration behavior, and any applicable quantity limits. Stripe’s Dashboard and configuration API documentation describe controls for eligible products and prices, quantities, promotion codes, proration and billing-cycle timing (Dashboard guide; configuration API reference).

Cancellation

Choose whether customers may cancel and whether to collect a reason. Decide whether cancellation is immediate or takes effect at the end of the period, and set proration behavior deliberately. Immediate cancellation and period-end cancellation have different consequences for renewal and the end of access; invoice adjustments depend on the selected proration behavior and billing setup. Align the portal’s behavior with your entitlement policy. Stripe’s Dashboard guide also describes optional retention offers such as coupons (Stripe configuration guide).

Customer details, payment methods and invoices

Enable only the customer information fields your business wants customers to update. Stripe lists name, email, billing address, phone number, shipping address and tax ID, but its guide says email changes are unavailable in the no-code portal. Verify the capability in the integration you use before promising email updates. Payment-method updates and invoice-history visibility are separate switches.

Configure the portal in the Dashboard

  1. In the Stripe Dashboard, open Billing customer portal settings.

  2. Choose which subscription-management options to enable: plan switching, quantity changes and cancellation. Set the eligible products or prices and the timing, proration and cancellation behavior to match your billing rules.

  3. Select the customer details customers may edit, and decide separately whether to allow payment-method updates and invoice-history access.

  5. Preview the configuration in a sandbox. Stripe says quick view is unavailable for live-mode customers for security reasons.

  6. Make the portal available to customers through the access path appropriate to your setup. For an application, create a session when the customer asks to manage billing, as described below.

Give customers access from your application

Create a portal session on your server for the existing Stripe customer. Stripe’s session creation endpoint is POST /v1/billing_portal/sessions. A session takes a customer ID and return URL; configuration ID and locale are optional. If you omit the configuration, Stripe uses the default configuration. Session URLs are short-lived, so create one on demand rather than storing or treating it as a permanent customer link (Stripe session and configuration overview).

  1. Authenticate the customer in your application and identify the Stripe customer record associated with that account.

  2. From your server, request POST /v1/billing_portal/sessions with that customer ID and a return_url leading back to an appropriate page in your application.

  3. If needed, supply a configuration ID to select a non-default portal configuration, or a locale to set the portal language.

Keep session creation server-side: the session must be created for the right existing Stripe customer, and the returned URL is temporary. Do not expose credentials used to create it in client-side code.

Using the portal with Stripe Connect

For Connect, the session API also accepts on_behalf_of. Set it only when the customer’s subscriptions and invoices belong to that connected-account context. Stripe documents that this scope filters the portal to subscriptions and invoices with the matching on_behalf_of account (session creation reference).
