Google Drive vs OneDrive: Which Cloud Storage Fits Your Videos in 2026?

Google Drive and OneDrive have different strengths for video libraries. Compare their documented storage quotas, playback and upload limits, and what those figures do—and do not—tell you.

For video libraries in 2026, Google Drive and OneDrive are the two services whose current storage and file-limit details can be compared here using official documentation. Choose Drive if its video preview and Google-account storage fit your needs; consider OneDrive if its stated large-file upload ceiling and Microsoft storage plans better match your workflow. Neither storage capacity nor an upload limit guarantees smooth playback or editing performance.

Why this is a two-service comparison, not a top-10 ranking

A fair ten-service ranking would need current, comparable official details for each provider: storage quotas and prices in a defined market, per-file upload limits, playback and resolution support, sharing controls, and privacy terms. Those details are not established on the same basis for ten services. Google Drive and OneDrive are the two services for which the available official documentation supports a useful comparison of storage and video or upload limits. Treat this as a focused comparison, not a claim that they are objectively the two best services for every user.

Other 2026 cloud-storage roundups include Dropbox, Apple iCloud, and pCloud among services worth considering, but those mentions do not establish equivalent video-specific limits or a like-for-like ranking. See TechRadar’s cloud-storage comparison and 01net’s video-storage roundup for broader candidate lists.

What the official specifications show

The figures below come from Google and Microsoft support documentation accessed in 2026. They are not prices: plan pricing and availability can vary by market and account, and a universal price comparison is not established.

Service Storage options stated by the provider Video or per-file limit stated by the provider Playback information
Google Drive / Google One Google accounts include up to 15 GB at no charge, shared across Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Google One starts with a 100 GB storage option. Google Drive Help Google says a video can be stored up to 5 TB if the account has purchased at least 5 TB of storage; otherwise, available account quota is the limit. This is not a general upload-speed or playback guarantee. Google Drive Help Maximum playback resolution is 1920 × 1080. Internet quality can affect playback, and processing may continue after a video first plays in the same browser session. Google Drive Help
Microsoft OneDrive / Microsoft 365 Microsoft lists 5 GB for a free personal account, 100 GB for Basic, and 1 TB per person for Personal and Family. Family supports up to six people. Eligible subscribers on certain Microsoft 365 plans may add storage up to 10 TB; eligibility applies. Microsoft Support The OneDrive website supports uploads up to 250 GB per file, depending on the browser. Microsoft recommends its desktop app for large files or many files. This upload ceiling is separate from the storage quota. Microsoft Support A maximum video playback resolution is not stated in the cited Microsoft documentation.

Which service fits your video workflow?

Choose Google Drive when preview in the cloud matters

Drive documents direct video storage and playback, with playback up to 1920 × 1080. That can be useful when you want to preview a clip without downloading it first, but it does not mean every source video will play at its original resolution. Google also warns that playback can depend on internet quality and that processing may still be underway after immediate playback in the same browser session. A video that appears to work for you may not yet be ready on another device or for a recipient.

Account capacity needs special attention: Google’s no-charge 15 GB is shared among Drive, Gmail, and Photos. A large video archive therefore competes with email and photo storage. The 100 GB Google One option is the stated starting storage tier, not a quoted price or a guarantee that it is available on identical terms in every market.

  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Choose OneDrive when its large-file upload ceiling is relevant

Microsoft documents a 250 GB per-file limit for uploads through the OneDrive website, subject to browser behavior, and recommends the desktop app for large transfers or many files. This is useful information if you regularly move individual large files, but it does not establish transfer speed, playback quality, or editing suitability.

OneDrive storage depends on the plan: Microsoft lists 5 GB free, 100 GB for Basic, and 1 TB per person for Personal and Family, with Family covering up to six people. Eligible subscribers on certain Microsoft 365 plans can add storage up to 10 TB. Check the account and plan conditions before relying on the additional-storage option.

Rank #3
SSK Portable SSD 1TB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD

How to choose capacity for a video library

  1. Estimate what you will actually keep in the cloud. Add the size of originals, exports, and any duplicate versions you plan to retain. Do not choose a quota based only on the size of your current finished clips.
  2. Account for storage used elsewhere. With Google, the included 15 GB is shared with Gmail and Google Photos. With Microsoft, compare your needs against the stated quota for the specific account or plan, rather than treating the upload ceiling as storage capacity.
  3. Leave room for new footage and versions. If you routinely keep source files and multiple exports, select capacity for the whole working library, not just one project.
  4. Check local plan availability and price before subscribing. The documented capacity tiers do not establish a universal price across countries or accounts.

Storage, upload, playback, and editing are different jobs

A service’s storage quota answers how much data an account can hold. A per-file limit answers how large an individual upload may be. Neither tells you how quickly a transfer will finish, whether a clip will stream smoothly, or what resolution a viewer will see. Google’s documented playback ceiling is 1920 × 1080 even though its documented video storage limit can reach 5 TB when enough storage has been purchased. Microsoft’s 250 GB website upload ceiling likewise does not establish a playback specification.

Do not treat cloud sync or playback as proof that a service is suitable for editing directly from cloud-stored media. The available official details do not establish an editing workflow or performance guarantee for either service. For editing, verify the exact application, file formats, connection, and workflow you intend to use rather than assuming that a stored file behaves like one on a fast local drive.

Check playback and sharing before moving an archive

  • Test representative clips. Try the formats, resolutions, and file sizes you use, on the devices and apps your household or collaborators will actually use. Google lists supported video formats but notes that not every type works on every device.
  • Allow for processing. Google says a video may play in the browser where it was uploaded while processing continues before it is ready on other devices or for people it is shared with.
  • Check the recipient experience. Confirm that recipients can open the shared files using the access method and devices they have. The cited specifications do not provide a comparable account of recipient permissions or sharing controls for both services.
  • Review privacy and security terms directly. The cited storage and upload pages do not support a like-for-like privacy or encryption comparison. Check current provider documentation and account settings for the controls you need.

Neither provider’s official capacity and upload figures establish which one will upload or stream faster in real-world conditions. Connection quality, browser or app behavior, file format, file size, and provider processing can all affect the experience; no controlled speed comparison is available here.

  • Very large individual website uploads: OneDrive’s documented website ceiling is 250 GB per file, depending on browser; Microsoft recommends the desktop app for large files or batches.
  • Shared Google account storage: Remember that Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos draw on the same included 15 GB.
  • Storage for multiple people: Microsoft lists Family storage as 1 TB per person for up to six people. Confirm the plan terms for your account and market.
  • Editing from cloud files, privacy comparisons, or a ten-provider winner: The cited specifications do not establish enough comparable evidence to recommend a provider on those grounds.
