Dedicated editors such as Visual Studio Code and Obsidian put Markdown source, preview modes, or project tools closer to the center of the experience. The right choice depends on whether you want a shared word-processing document, direct work with Markdown files, or a source-and-preview workflow.
Does Google Docs support Markdown?
Yes, but its support is a set of documented formatting and file-conversion features—not a promise that Docs implements every Markdown dialect or feature. Google lets you enable or disable Markdown in Tools → Preferences. Supported formatting includes italics, bold, strikethrough, links, and up to six heading levels. See Google’s Markdown instructions for Docs for the documented actions and settings.
Docs also provides ways to move content between Markdown and Docs: paste Markdown as formatted content, copy selected content as Markdown, and download a Google Doc in Markdown format. Google describes the export option this way: “You can export the document as Markdown for use in another application.” These actions are useful when Markdown is an exchange format, even if you do most of your writing in Docs.
Can Google Docs open and edit .md files?
Yes. Google documents opening and editing .md and .markdown files in Drive and Docs. In this workflow, the file remains a Markdown file rather than becoming a Google Docs file. Docs provides a formatted editing environment, along with sharing and collaboration features. Google explains this workflow and its limitations in its guide to viewing and editing Markdown files.

That is different from using Markdown formatting inside a Google Doc. In the first workflow, you are editing a Markdown file that retains its file type. In the second, you are using Markdown syntax or conversion actions with Docs content.
Formatting that may not survive
Google lists several Docs-specific formatting elements that are not supported in Markdown files. Smart chips may become text or links; web formatting (HTML) becomes plain text; and font colors, highlights, and text alignment are removed. If a file uses these elements, review the result after editing rather than assuming the Markdown version will preserve them.

What do dedicated Markdown editors do differently?
“Markdown editor” does not describe one standard set of features. Visual Studio Code and Obsidian illustrate two different approaches, while Google Docs centers its experience on word processing, sharing, and conversion.
Visual Studio Code: source, preview, and project workflow
VS Code is designed to work with Markdown source files. Its documented features include a rendered preview beside the source, synchronized scrolling, a heading-based outline, and preview options for Markdown diffs. Its source-control tools also support reviewing changes and committing them. These capabilities suit writers who work with Markdown as part of local files or a larger project. Obsidian: reading and editing modes with extensions
Obsidian documents both reading and editing views, including Live Preview and Source mode. Its Markdown documentation says it supports CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown, plus Obsidian-specific syntax. That added syntax can be useful within Obsidian, but application-specific extensions may not render the same way elsewhere. Check the destination application’s support before relying on an extension for a file you plan to share. Details are in Obsidian’s guides to views and editing mode and Obsidian Flavored Markdown.

How to choose
- Choose Google Docs if your priority is a familiar word-processing surface, sharing and comments, or moving selected content between Docs and Markdown. Decide whether you mean Markdown formatting in a Google Doc or editing a file that remains
.md; they are separate workflows. - Choose VS Code if you want to see and edit Markdown source, check a rendered preview as you work, navigate by headings, or review and commit changes with Git.
- Choose Obsidian if its reading and editing modes suit your work and you want its documented Markdown support, including Obsidian-specific syntax. Consider where the file will be rendered before depending on an extension.
For a file that will move between applications, keep the Markdown features within the support documented by the destination renderer and check the result after conversion. This is especially important when the content uses Docs formatting that Google says is not supported in Markdown files or syntax specific to an editor.
