Opening an .md file keeps it as a Markdown file; to convert Markdown into content in a Google Doc, copy the source and use Paste from Markdown. The right workflow depends on whether you want to keep editing the Markdown file or create a standard Docs document.

Open a Markdown file without converting it
In Docs, use File > Open > Upload and select the .md file. Alternatively, upload the file to Drive and choose Open with > Google Docs. Google’s native Markdown-file workflow lets you view and edit the Markdown file, but it does not change the file into a native Google Doc. Drive also offers a Markdown preview. Convert Markdown into Docs content
- Copy the Markdown source.
- Open the Google Docs document where you want the converted content.
- Right-click in the document and select Paste from Markdown.
- If that command is missing, go to Tools > Preferences and enable Markdown.
Google’s Help instructions identify Paste from Markdown as the conversion route. They do not publish a complete compatibility list for every Markdown dialect or extension, so check the result rather than assume that every syntax will convert as intended. Google Docs Editors Help
Fix common Markdown import problems
Markdown punctuation appears literally
If you see markers such as **bold** or # Heading in the document, ordinary paste may have inserted the source text rather than converting it. Try Paste from Markdown. If you cannot find the command, open Tools > Preferences and enable Markdown.

Google’s July 16, 2024 product announcement said that Copy as Markdown and Paste from Markdown were off by default and could be enabled in Docs preferences at that time. The file still has an .md label
That is expected when you open a Markdown file using Docs’ native Markdown-file workflow: the file remains an .md file. To make a standard Google Doc, use Paste from Markdown to place converted content in a Docs document instead. Google Docs Editors Help

Colors, highlights, alignment, or smart chips changed
Google warns that some Docs features might change when editing an .MD file. Its listed examples include smart chips becoming text or links, HTML formatting becoming plain text, and font colors, highlights, and text alignment being removed. These are specific documented changes, not a claim that all Markdown formatting is lost. If editing changed something you need, use File > Version history to restore an earlier version. Headings do not appear as headings or in the outline
Google’s Markdown guidance says a heading must start at the beginning of a paragraph, use one to six number signs, and include a space before its text. For example, ## Section title denotes a level-two heading. Google Docs Editors Help

If a heading still is not recognized after conversion, select the line and apply a heading style from the style menu. Docs’ outline detects heading styles, so applying one can restore the document structure and navigation. Google Docs Editors Help: Use document outlines, margins, & rulers
Tables do not come through as expected
Google’s Markdown Help gives examples such as headings, italics, bold, strikethrough, and links, but does not provide a complete table-syntax compatibility matrix. If a table is missing or malformed, rebuild or adjust it with Insert > Table and Docs’ table controls. Docs supports adding and editing rows and columns. What to expect from Google’s newer Markdown-file support
Google’s October 5, 2026 Workspace update announced that Docs can view, edit, and collaborate on Markdown files natively, while Drive can show rendered previews. The rollout began October 5, 2026, for Rapid and Scheduled Release domains, and Google said no end-user setting is required. This native support does not mean that opening an .md file converts it into a Google Docs file. Because the rollout has only recently begun, the feature may not yet appear in every user’s interface; check the current Docs or Drive experience and Google’s rollout update. When to consider an add-on
If your file relies on complex structures that do not work with the built-in workflow, first inspect the converted result and repair it with Docs formatting controls. Google does not publish a complete Markdown compatibility matrix in its Help instructions. One optional Marketplace listing, Markdown to Docs (GdocifyMd), says it supports features including headings, formatting, blockquotes, images, links, lists, code blocks, and tables. The listing also says bookmarks and cross-references cannot be kept and table styles cannot be preserved. Those are the publisher’s claims, not independent test results; check the listing for current features and terms before relying on it.
