It did not publish a forecast of the update’s traffic impact.
What changed in Google Discover?
On February 5, 2026, Google announced an update to the systems that surface articles in Discover. Its stated goals were to:

- Show users more locally relevant content from websites based in their country.
- Reduce sensational content and clickbait.
- Surface more in-depth, original and timely articles from websites demonstrating expertise in the subject.
Google Search Advocate John Mueller said the systems assess expertise by subject rather than requiring a site to cover only one field. A local news site, for example, could demonstrate gardening expertise through a dedicated gardening section even if it covers other topics. A movie review site with just one gardening article would be less likely to show that subject expertise, Google said.
The announcement also said Discover would remain personalized around people’s preferences for creators and sources. Google did not describe the change as a universal ranking of publishers.

Does the update affect Google Search rankings?
Google’s announcement concerned Discover’s article-surfacing systems. Search Engine Roundtable reported that the rollout was specific to Discover and did not affect traditional Google Search rankings. The two surfaces should not be treated as interchangeable: a change in Discover visibility does not, on this evidence, establish a change in a page’s Search ranking.
When did the February 2026 update roll out?
- February 5, 2026: Google announced the update and said it was releasing it to English-language users in the United States.
- February 27, 2026: Search Engine Roundtable reported that the rollout was complete.
Google said it planned to expand the update to all countries and languages in the months ahead. That was a stated plan, not confirmation that the expansion had finished everywhere. The available reporting does not establish whether worldwide expansion was complete by October 12, 2026.

How might the update affect publishers?
Google said outcomes could vary. Mueller wrote, “Some sites might see increases or decreases; many sites may see no change at all.” Google provided no numerical estimate, study result or guaranteed direction of traffic change, so “dramatic changes” should be understood as headline framing rather than a measured prediction.

These practices align with Google’s stated aims; they do not guarantee Discover distribution.
Search Engine Journal reported on February 6, 2026, that Google revised its Discover guidance alongside the update, adding page-experience recommendations and explicitly naming clickbait and sensationalism. This detail is attributed to that publication’s report.
