AMD’s AI strategy spans three different scales: Ryzen AI features for supported PCs, ROCm software for GPU development and deployment, and Instinct accelerators and Helios systems for data centers. They are not interchangeable products. The right path depends on the workload, compatible hardware, memory and throughput needs, and whether the AI must run on a personal device or at infrastructure scale.
What is AMD doing in AI?
AMD is building hardware and software for AI workloads ranging from local inference on a PC to large-scale model training and deployment. Its portfolio is best understood as three paths:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Ryzen AI: software and supported Ryzen processors with an NPU for local PC workloads.
- ROCm: an open software platform for developing, optimizing, training, and serving AI workloads on supported AMD GPUs.
- Instinct and Helios: data-center accelerators and integrated infrastructure for AI and high-performance computing (HPC).
These are AMD’s product descriptions and reported figures, not independent performance tests. The cited materials do not establish a universal best-value option or head-to-head results against other vendors.
Can AMD Ryzen AI run AI locally?
Yes, on compatible systems and for workloads supported by the software and hardware. AMD says developers can deploy pretrained models through ONNX Runtime on the NPU, integrated GPU (iGPU), or a combination of the two on select Ryzen AI-powered laptops. Named use cases include language models, image and video generation, recommendation, and computer vision. See AMD’s Ryzen AI Software page for the product overview.

“Ryzen” alone does not mean a computer has an NPU or supports Ryzen AI software. Check the exact processor, system, operating system, software version, and current compatibility documentation before choosing a machine or planning a deployment. AMD’s Ryzen AI Software Developer Hub distinguishes NPU support from GPU development routes.
What the NPU, iGPU, and CPU do
- NPU: a dedicated neural processing unit in supported processors. Ryzen AI software targets processors with an NPU.
- iGPU: integrated graphics hardware that can also run supported models. AMD lists ROCm, DirectML, and Lemonade as iGPU routes.
- CPU: the general-purpose processor. AMD describes Lemonade as an open-source multimodal API that can allocate CPU, NPU, and iGPU resources.
AMD describes DirectML as a route for converting models to ONNX and optimizing deployment on Ryzen iGPU. For larger models or workloads with high throughput, memory-bandwidth, graphics, or compute demands, AMD recommends considering ROCm. The best execution device depends on the model and supported software; a PC’s AI label alone does not establish that it can run a particular model at a desired speed or memory footprint.
What is the difference between Ryzen AI and ROCm?
Ryzen AI is the more PC-focused route for supported systems with an NPU. ROCm is a broader GPU software stack used for development and deployment, including training and inference. AMD also identifies ROCm support for GPU work on Ryzen iGPUs, so the distinction is about the software path and workload—not simply laptop versus data center.

ROCm combines programming models, tools, compilers, libraries, and runtimes. AMD’s overview names PyTorch, TensorFlow, and JAX for framework workflows, alongside tools and serving technologies including AMD Primus, Quark, AITER, vLLM, and SGLang. Hardware support is selective, not universal; consult AMD’s ROCm overview and its linked compatibility documentation for the exact GPU and software release.
ROCm 10 and the dated CLI status
In its August 27, 2026 announcement, AMD said ROCm.AI became generally available with ROCm 10, and described AMD Skills and the ROCm Core SDK as parts of the experience. The same announcement characterized the ROCm CLI as a Technology Preview, available as a prebuilt binary for Windows and Linux to manage ROCm environments, serve models, run diagnostics, and show telemetry on supported systems. That is the status stated in the August 27, 2026 announcement; it does not guarantee the preview status is unchanged now.
Are AMD Instinct GPUs used for AI?
Yes. AMD positions its Instinct MI-series GPUs for AI and HPC, including generative AI training, inference, and fine-tuning. These are data-center accelerators, not ordinary desktop graphics cards. AMD’s current product page describes MI400 Series products including MI455X for frontier and sovereign AI and MI430X for sovereign AI and HPC.

What AMD has reported about ROCm adoption
In its 2025 annual report, published in 2026, AMD reported out-of-the-box ROCm support for more than two million models on Hugging Face and a tenfold increase in ROCm downloads during 2025. Both are AMD-reported adoption figures, not an independent usage audit or a measure of performance. The figures appear in AMD’s 2025 Annual Report.

Start with the specific model and workload rather than the AI branding on a product. A local inference experiment may fit a supported Ryzen AI PC; GPU development or workloads that need more throughput may point toward a supported ROCm configuration. Training and serving at data-center scale are the kind of use cases AMD assigns to Instinct and Helios infrastructure.

- Check software and model support: verify the framework, model format, operating system, and exact GPU or NPU against current AMD documentation.
- Estimate resource needs: account for model memory requirements, memory bandwidth, throughput, and whether the task is inference, fine-tuning, training, or HPC.
- Choose where it runs: decide whether processing must stay on a personal device or can use a workstation, cluster, or data center.
- Plan the whole system: for larger deployments, consider power, cooling, networking, system compatibility, procurement, availability, and total cost—not just accelerator specifications.
AMD’s 2025 annual report said initial shipments supporting the first gigawatt OpenAI deployment were scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026 and that AMD was on track to begin MI400-series and Helios production shipments in the second half of 2026. Those were forecasts in that report, not confirmation that shipments subsequently began on schedule.
How to choose among AMD’s AI paths
Use these distinctions to narrow the options, then verify the configuration against current documentation and availability:

- Choose Ryzen AI as a starting point if the goal is to experiment with supported local workloads on a PC and the exact system has the required NPU or supported iGPU path.
- Evaluate ROCm if the goal is GPU-based model development, training, optimization, or inference and the selected hardware and framework are supported.
- Evaluate Instinct or Helios infrastructure if the workload requires data-center-scale accelerator capacity and a full system designed for deployment.
AMD’s portfolio claims can help identify the intended category, but they do not decide which product is optimal. That depends on workload-specific compatibility, measured performance, resource requirements, availability, and total system cost.
