Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →There is no universally best cloud provider. AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud all cover the core categories—compute, storage, databases, containers, analytics, security and management. The right choice is the one that best matches your application architecture, latency and region requirements, compliance obligations, existing commercial commitments, team skills and three-year cost.
Compare the same bill of materials in each provider’s calculator, then validate the finalists with a proof of concept. A generic “cheapest cloud” or “best cloud” ranking is misleading because service prices, discounts, data-transfer charges and regional availability differ.

Quick verdict: match the provider to the constraint
Use these as starting hypotheses, not rankings. Confirm the exact service, region, contract and operating model before committing.
| Provider | Often the best fit when… | Validate before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| AWS | Your organisation already runs AWS, has strong AWS skills, or needs the breadth of its service catalog. | The specific managed service’s maturity, regional availability, operating burden and transfer costs for your architecture. |
| Azure | Microsoft Entra ID, Windows Server, SQL Server, Microsoft licensing, hybrid operations or Microsoft developer tools are central. | Licensing benefits, identity and network integration, service availability in the required region, and the terms of your existing agreement. |
| Google Cloud | Analytics, data warehousing, Kubernetes or machine learning are decisive differentiators. | BigQuery, Google Kubernetes Engine, storage, database and AI/ML pricing for your data volumes, traffic and workload shape. |
If two or more providers remain viable, run the same workload on each and measure latency, throughput, reliability, operator effort, security controls, migration friction and total cost. The result is a workload decision rather than a brand preference.

Define the workload before comparing products
Cloud services are not interchangeable line items. Write down the workload’s technical and organisational constraints first; otherwise, a comparison becomes a list of similarly named products with different assumptions.
Application and data architecture
- Identify whether the system is virtual-machine based, containerised, serverless, event-driven, database-heavy or a mixture.
- Record CPU, memory, storage capacity, IOPS, request rates, peak concurrency, backup retention and expected growth.
- Map every dependency: identity, queues, object storage, relational or NoSQL databases, analytics, monitoring, secrets, DNS and content delivery.
- Decide which components must be managed services and which your team can operate safely.
Latency and geography
List user locations, application regions, database regions and any cross-region replication. A provider with a nominally lower instance price can cost more if traffic must cross regions or continents. Test from the locations that matter to users, not only from a developer laptop.
Compliance, sovereignty and contracts
Translate legal requirements into technical checks: permitted countries, data-residency boundaries, encryption and customer-controlled keys, administrator access, audit evidence, incident-notification duties and deletion requirements. A provider comparison table is a starting point; it does not prove that a particular configuration satisfies your jurisdiction or contract.
People and existing commitments
Count the skills you can staff for operations, security and incident response. Existing enterprise agreements, support plans, committed spend and licensing can materially change the effective price. Include migration retraining and the cost of hiring scarce specialists.
How the three clouds map to core capabilities
Compare equivalent categories first, then drill into the exact service and edition. Google Cloud’s official comparison organizes AWS, Azure and Google Cloud across the following areas.
| Category | What to compare | Why the label alone is insufficient |
|---|---|---|
| Compute | Virtual machines, machine families, autoscaling, accelerators and pricing model. | CPU generation, memory ratios, attached storage, regional supply and sustained utilization change performance and cost. |
| Containers | Managed Kubernetes, cluster management, networking, upgrades and serverless containers. | Control-plane, node, ingress, observability and egress charges may be separate. |
| Storage | Object, block and file storage, durability, retrieval, operations and replication. | Storage class and request patterns can outweigh the per-gigabyte rate. |
| Databases | Relational, key-value, document, analytical and distributed options; replicas and backups. | Capacity, licensing, high availability and backup retention are priced differently. |
| Analytics | Data warehouse, stream processing, lakehouse and query execution. | Scanned data, slots or compute reservations, storage and data movement determine spend. |
| Migration | Discovery, replication, conversion, cutover and rollback tooling. | A low migration-tool price does not remove application remediation or downtime risk. |
| Security and identity | Identity federation, policy, key management, threat detection, logging and posture management. | Feature availability and evidence vary by region, service tier and compliance program. |
| Management | Monitoring, logging, automation, service quotas, support and billing controls. | Operational visibility and support response can be more valuable than a small infrastructure discount. |
Where each provider tends to fit
AWS: breadth and continuity
AWS is a sensible default when your organisation already operates there, has a deep AWS talent pool or needs a broad catalog of managed services. Reusing account structure, identity patterns, infrastructure-as-code modules, monitoring practices and operational runbooks can reduce migration risk.

Do not treat “AWS has a service for that” as the end of the analysis. Compare the exact service’s availability in your target region, deployment model, limits, upgrade responsibility, backup behavior, support tier and network charges. A familiar service can still be a poor fit if it forces an architecture that does not match your latency, data or staffing requirements.

Azure: Microsoft identity, licensing and hybrid operations
Azure is often the shortest path when Microsoft Entra ID, Windows Server, SQL Server, Microsoft licensing, hybrid datacenters or Microsoft development tooling are already strategic. Existing identity and policy integration can simplify access control and reduce duplicated governance.
Model licensing benefits rather than assuming them. Check which workloads qualify, whether a benefit applies in the required region and edition, and how it interacts with reservations, support and existing enterprise terms. Test hybrid connectivity, directory synchronization, management boundaries and failover procedures with the same controls you will use in production.
Google Cloud: data, Kubernetes and machine learning
Google Cloud is often a strong fit when analytics, data warehousing, Kubernetes or machine learning drive the decision. Its published catalog includes BigQuery, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL and AI/ML products.
Data workloads need special care because a warehouse, object store, streaming pipeline and model-training environment can generate substantial scan, processing and transfer charges. Measure query patterns, storage lifecycle rules, replication and accelerator utilization. For Kubernetes, evaluate cluster operations, node pools, upgrade policy, networking, observability and the skills required to run the platform reliably.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose compute by workload shape, not by brand
Google Cloud’s machine-family guidance explicitly separates storage-intensive, compute-bound, I/O-intensive database and machine-learning use cases. The same principle applies across all providers: select the machine family and accelerator according to the bottleneck you measured.

Storage-intensive workloads
File processing, large indexes and data pipelines may be constrained by capacity or storage throughput. Compare local and network-attached storage, throughput limits, durability, replication and recovery time—not only vCPU price.
Compute-bound workloads
Compilers, simulations and CPU-heavy services benefit from sustained compute performance and appropriate CPU-to-memory ratios. Benchmark representative jobs at realistic concurrency, then include autoscaling behavior and idle capacity in the cost model.
I/O-intensive databases
Database latency can depend more on IOPS, cache, transaction log throughput and replica placement than on nominal CPU. Measure reads, writes, tail latency, failover time, backup windows and cross-zone or cross-region traffic.

Training and inference require a complete view of accelerator type, memory, interconnect, dataset movement, orchestration and utilization. Include time spent waiting for capacity, checkpoint storage, experiment tracking, serving replicas and model-egress traffic.
Compare cloud cost with one bill of materials
Never publish or rely on a single “cheapest cloud” claim without a region, architecture, time horizon and commitment assumptions. Build one bill of materials and enter identical quantities into each provider’s current calculator.
Cost items to capture
- Compute: machine family, vCPU, memory, accelerator, hours, autoscaling minimum and maximum, and utilization.
- Storage: object, block and file capacity; storage class; operations; retrieval; snapshots; replication; and retention.
- Databases: engine, tier, provisioned capacity, replicas, high-availability topology, backups and point-in-time recovery.
- Network: ingress, internet egress, inter-zone and inter-region traffic, VPN or dedicated connectivity, load balancing and content delivery.
- Platform services: Kubernetes control-plane and nodes, serverless invocations, queues, functions, observability, secrets and security scanning.
- Commercial terms: on-demand rates, reservations or committed use, discounts, support, taxes, currency and contract duration.
Google Cloud pricing considerations
Google Cloud describes its model as pay-as-you-go with no up-front fees or termination charges. It advertises $300 in credits for new customers and free monthly-use limits on more than 20 products. It also advertises savings of up to 57% in examples involving committed-use discounts. These are eligibility- and usage-dependent terms, not a universal reduction for every architecture.

Google’s pricing overview uses the phrase “Only pay for what you use.” Actual spend still depends on usage, region, service, storage and network behavior, and any applicable discounts. Product-level rates for Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL, BigQuery, Google Kubernetes Engine and AI/ML services must be modeled for your design.
Make the comparison auditable
Save the calculator inputs, timestamp, region, currency and commitment assumptions. Produce three views: monthly steady state, a peak or failover month, and a three-year total that includes migration, support, observability, egress and reserved capacity. If a value is uncertain, show a range and identify the variable that drives it.
Regions, sovereignty and compliance
All three providers publish sovereignty or specialized-cloud controls. The comparison categories include Google Cloud sovereign controls, AWS European Sovereign Cloud and Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty. Availability and scope differ, so verify the implementation rather than inferring compliance from the product name.
Questions to answer for your jurisdiction
- Which physical regions may store primary data, replicas, backups and logs?
- Can support personnel or subprocessors access data or encryption keys from outside the permitted boundary?
- Who controls keys, how are they rotated, and what happens if a key is disabled?
- Which certifications and audit reports cover the exact service and region?
- What incident-notification, legal-process and data-deletion commitments appear in the contract?
- Can you prove residency and administrative access through logs and exportable evidence?
Document these answers in the architecture review and contract. A feature listed in a provider comparison is not, by itself, regulatory approval.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a decision matrix when several providers qualify
Score each finalist against criteria weighted for your workload. A simple 1-to-5 score is useful only when every score has written evidence from a benchmark, architecture review, contract or provider documentation.
| Criterion | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|
| Performance and latency | p50/p95/p99 latency, throughput, saturation point and failover results from representative tests. |
| Service maturity and migration effort | Feature gaps, conversion work, dependency changes, rollback plan and estimated engineering weeks. |
| Identity and hybrid integration | Federation, policy enforcement, private connectivity, directory integration and operational boundaries. |
| Data and AI capability | Query performance, pipeline reliability, accelerator availability, model-serving behavior and data movement. |
| Regional availability and sovereignty | Required regions, residency controls, certifications, key custody and contractual commitments. |
| Security and compliance | Control mappings, logging, detection, vulnerability response, audit evidence and incident procedures. |
| Team skills and hiring | Current competence, on-call coverage, training time and local hiring difficulty. |
| Operations | Monitoring, automation, quotas, support response, upgrade paths and recovery exercises. |
| Three-year total cost | Common bill of materials including egress, commitments, support, taxes, migration and exit costs. |
Weight the criteria before seeing the results. For a latency-sensitive product, performance and region may dominate; for a regulated data platform, sovereignty and key control may be gating requirements rather than scoreable advantages.
Best Value
Run a proof of concept that can change the decision
A proof of concept should test the riskiest assumptions, not merely demonstrate that a sample application can deploy.
- Freeze the scope: choose one representative user journey, dataset, traffic profile and failure scenario.
- Normalize the architecture: use equivalent CPU, memory, storage, database capacity, replicas, retention and network paths in each provider.
- Instrument everything: capture application latency, database latency, throughput, error rate, utilization, logs, traces, support interactions and operator time.
- Test normal and adverse conditions: include peak load, zone or region failure, dependency failure, backup restore, key rotation and a controlled deployment rollback.
- Record human effort: measure setup, policy configuration, troubleshooting, upgrades, incident response and documentation work.
- Recalculate cost: extrapolate measured usage to monthly and three-year scenarios, including egress, idle capacity, support and commitments.
- Set acceptance gates: reject a provider that misses a non-negotiable latency, residency, recovery or security requirement even if its nominal price is lower.
Migration and operating-model trade-offs
Rehosting
Moving virtual machines with minimal changes can reduce initial engineering effort, but it may preserve inefficient licensing, scaling and storage patterns. Compare the short-term migration saving with the long-term operating cost.
Refactoring for managed services
Adopting managed databases, event services, serverless components or a managed Kubernetes platform can reduce undifferentiated operations. It can also increase provider-specific dependencies and make a later move harder. Record which interfaces are portable and which are deliberately proprietary.
Multi-cloud
Running across providers can improve resilience or satisfy geographic requirements, but it duplicates identity, networking, observability, skills and incident procedures. Use multi-cloud when a concrete business or regulatory requirement justifies that complexity, not as an automatic hedge against lock-in.
Exit planning
Define export formats, data-transfer windows, key ownership, DNS changes, application abstractions, backup portability and the cost of moving large datasets. Test a small restore or export before production so that “portable” is an observed property rather than an assumption.
Common comparison mistakes
- Using list prices without a region: rates and service availability vary by geography.
- Comparing unlike services: a self-managed virtual machine is not equivalent to a fully managed database.
- Ignoring data transfer: egress and inter-region traffic can dominate a data-heavy design.
- Applying promotional credits to steady state: new-customer credits and free-use limits are not recurring production discounts.
- Assuming a commitment always saves money: unused reservations or committed capacity can cost more than flexible usage.
- Counting only infrastructure: include support, observability, security tooling, licensing, migration and staff time.
- Choosing on feature count: a long catalog does not replace a required regional service, control or skill set.
- Skipping failure tests: a deployment that works in the happy path may fail recovery, key-rotation or quota tests.
Practical starting choices by scenario
| Scenario | Starting point | First validation |
|---|---|---|
| Existing AWS estate and skills | AWS | Confirm that staying avoids migration cost and that the chosen managed services meet latency, reliability and compliance targets. |
| Microsoft-heavy enterprise or hybrid datacenter | Azure | Model Entra ID, Windows and SQL Server integration, licensing benefits, private connectivity and operational ownership. |
| New analytics or warehouse platform | Google Cloud | Benchmark ingestion, query scans, concurrency, storage lifecycle, governance and data-egress patterns. |
| Kubernetes-centered product | Shortlist all three | Run the same cluster workload and compare upgrades, networking, observability, node economics and on-call effort. |
| Machine-learning training and inference | Shortlist all three | Test accelerator availability, training time, checkpoint movement, serving latency and utilization at production scale. |
| Strict residency or sovereign-operation requirement | Shortlist only regions and services that satisfy the requirement | Obtain written evidence for residency, key control, administrator access, certification and incident obligations. |
Final decision rule
Select the provider that passes every non-negotiable requirement and offers the strongest measured result on the criteria you weighted most heavily. Existing commitments can make AWS or Azure the rational choice; analytics, Kubernetes or machine learning can make Google Cloud the better fit; a neutral benchmark can overturn either assumption. Keep the bill of materials, proof-of-concept measurements and contract evidence with the architecture decision so the choice can be revisited when regions, prices, workloads or organisational skills change.
