If Chrome feels slow, first work out whether the problem affects every site or just one. Then try reversible steps: update Chrome, close unused tabs, check which tasks are using memory, and temporarily disable extensions. Use Memory Saver or review preloading if the slowdown appears tied to resource use; clear browsing data or reset Chrome only after simpler checks.
The steps below are for desktop Chrome unless noted. None guarantees a particular speed increase: slow pages can also point to a busy website, an overloaded computer, or an internet connection problem.

1. Check whether Chrome, a website, or the connection is slow
Before changing settings, compare the symptoms. If only one site is slow, the site itself or its connection may be the issue. If several sites struggle, check your internet connection and whether other apps or the whole computer are also sluggish. Google’s Chrome page-error troubleshooting recommends reloading the page and checking the connection; its guidance also covers testing in Incognito.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- One page is affected: reload it and try another site. A problem limited to one page does not by itself show that Chrome needs resetting.
- Many sites are affected: check the connection and look for resource-heavy tabs, extensions, or background tasks in Chrome.
- The computer is sluggish outside Chrome too: close other apps and consider restarting the computer before making more browser changes.
Incognito can help compare behavior, but it is not proof of a particular cause. If Chrome behaves better there, temporarily disabling extensions is a useful next check.

2. Update Chrome
Google says Chrome works best on the latest version. On desktop, open More (the three-dot menu) > Help > About Google Chrome. If an update is offered, install it and relaunch Chrome when prompted. An update is a sensible first check, not a guarantee that every slowdown will disappear.
See Google’s desktop update instructions and speed-up guidance.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
3. Close tabs you are not using
Open tabs make Chrome work harder, as Google notes in its speed-up guide. Close tabs you do not need; bookmark or otherwise save pages first if you want to return to them. There is no single safe tab count for every computer, since the effect depends on the pages and available system resources.
4. Find resource-heavy work in Chrome Task Manager
Chrome’s desktop Task Manager can show whether a tab, extension, or background page is using substantial memory.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Open More > More tools > Task Manager.
- Select the Memory column to sort tasks by memory use.
- If you recognize a task that is consuming resources and no longer need it, select it and choose End process.
Do not end an unfamiliar task casually: Google warns that ending a process can cause unsaved work to be lost. Check the page or extension first, and save anything important.
5. Temporarily disable extensions
Extensions can contribute to resource use or interfere with pages. Turn off extensions you do not need and see whether Chrome’s behavior changes; remove only extensions you no longer use. Google’s troubleshooting guidance explains how to manage extensions. If you are diagnosing a change in performance, disable extensions temporarily rather than removing several at once, so you can tell whether the change matters.

6. Turn on Memory Saver if inactive tabs are using memory
On desktop, go to Settings > Performance and review Memory Saver. It deactivates tabs that are not currently in use to help save computer memory; a deactivated tab reloads when you return to it. Google offers Moderate, Balanced (recommended), and Maximum deactivation levels. Choose based on how often you revisit tabs and how much memory pressure you are trying to reduce. Memory Saver is not available for Chrome performance personalization on Android or iOS. See Google’s Memory Saver and performance settings help.
7. Review page preloading
Chrome can preload pages to make browsing and searching faster. On desktop, check Settings > Performance for the preloading option and decide whether to enable it. Preloading is not a guaranteed fix for every device or connection. Google notes that it may use cookies when allowed and may encrypt and send pages through Google to hide your identity from sites. Read the details in Google’s performance settings guidance and speed-up guide before choosing.

8. Clear only the browsing data relevant to the problem
If a page is slow or errors, first reload it, check the connection, and compare in Incognito. If those checks point toward a browser-data issue, delete only the relevant categories rather than clearing everything as routine maintenance. Google’s instructions for deleting browsing data explain the available categories and controls.
Choose the time range and categories deliberately. Deleting data can affect synced information on other devices and your Google Account when you are signed in, depending on what you select. Cached images and files or cookies and site data may be relevant in some troubleshooting situations, but clearing them can also mean sites need to reload content or you may need to sign in again. Google’s page-error guidance includes this as a troubleshooting option, not a requirement for regular browser upkeep.
What to try if Chrome is still slow
Reduce competition from other apps
Close apps you are not using and see whether Chrome responds better. Google advises avoiding multiple apps at once in its speed-up guidance. If the whole computer remains sluggish, restart it; Google also lists restarting as a step in its page-error troubleshooting.

Reset Chrome settings only after simpler checks
If the problem persists after checking tabs, tasks, extensions, and the connection, restoring Chrome settings to their defaults is an official troubleshooting option. Find the reset controls in Chrome’s settings and review Google’s troubleshooting instructions before proceeding. Treat reset as a later diagnostic step, not a guaranteed performance boost.
