How to Improve Sound Quality on Your Android Phone During Calls

Quiet, distorted, or one-way Android phone calls usually come down to call volume, a blocked microphone or earpiece, audio routing, or weak network coverage. Here is how to check each one in order.

When a call sounds faint, or the other person says they cannot hear you, the cause is usually one of four things: the call volume is set too low, a case or your hand is covering a microphone or the earpiece, audio is going to the wrong output, or the network connection is weak where you are standing. Most of these can be checked in a few minutes, and you can work through them in that order. No single setting will improve every call. Menu names also differ by manufacturer, Android version, and carrier, so the Pixel and Samsung steps below are examples of where to look rather than universal paths.

Start with these fast checks

  1. Find out which direction is failing. Ask the caller whether they can hear you, or call a second contact. If only one person has the problem, the issue may be on their end.
  2. Adjust call volume during the call. Press the volume-up key while the call is active. Android treats call volume separately from media volume, so changing music or video volume outside a call may not change how loud the caller sounds in your earpiece. Google’s volume settings guidance describes this separation.
  3. Remove any case or screen protector temporarily. Samsung advises checking whether a case or screen protector blocks the microphone or receiver. Take the cover off and make a test call.
  4. Check the audio output. Confirm whether the call is going to the handset, the speaker, a wired headset, or a Bluetooth device. The wrong output is one of the most common causes of “I can’t hear anything” reports.
  5. Test from another spot. If the problem happens only in one room, a car, or a building basement, move somewhere else and call again.

If the caller’s voice is too quiet or distorted

Raise the call volume the right way

Start a call, then press the volume-up key on the side of the phone. Watch the on-screen volume indicator if one appears. If you changed the music volume earlier and nothing improved, that is expected: media and call volume are separate controls. Turn the call volume up a step at a time, because a level that is too high can make voices sound harsh rather than clearer.

Check the earpiece and receiver

The earpiece is the small speaker you hold against your ear. A thin screen protector, a case lip, or debris can muffle it. Samsung’s guidance on low or missing call sound lists obstructions as a first thing to check. Wipe the speaker opening gently with a dry, soft cloth. Do not push anything into the opening.

Confirm the audio is going to the handset

If you hear the caller only through the speaker, or only through a connected accessory, switch the in-call audio route back to the handset and test again. The control is usually on the in-call screen, labelled for audio or speaker.

If the other person cannot hear you

Hold the phone in the right position

Microphone placement matters more than most users expect. Google’s Pixel Phone Help says: “For better call quality, hold your phone so the bottom microphone stays near your mouth.” (Google Pixel Phone Help, “Turn on Clear Calling”). On most phones, the bottom microphone is the port along the lower edge beside the charging connector. Keep fingers, a lanyard, or a case lip away from it while you talk.

Remove accessories and test again

If the problem started after you added a case, screen protector, wired headset, or Bluetooth device, remove that item for a test call. Samsung’s microphone troubleshooting suggests disabling Bluetooth and removing external devices before deciding whether the phone’s microphone is faulty (Samsung, Microphone issues with Galaxy phone or tablet).

Record a short clip to check the microphone

Open your phone’s voice recorder app, record ten to fifteen seconds of normal speech at the distance you use on calls, then play it back. If the recording is muffled or silent, the microphone path is the likely problem. If it is clear, the issue is more likely in the network, the call route, or the other person’s device. Samsung describes this same test in its microphone guidance.

What not to do

Do not poke into the microphone or speaker openings with a pin or a tool, and do not use compressed air to clear them. Samsung specifically warns against compressed air when drying or cleaning a device (Samsung microphone troubleshooting). A damaged port is harder to fix than a dusty one.

If the problem only happens with a Bluetooth device

Check where the call audio is going

Bluetooth can route call audio separately from media. Music may play through your earbuds while the call still comes out of the phone, or the reverse. During the active call, check the audio output control and confirm the expected Bluetooth device is selected.

Confirm the Phone audio setting

Google’s Android guidance on Bluetooth problems says to check the accessory’s Phone audio setting when calls cannot be made or received through it. Media audio is a separate control, so a device can play music correctly while calls fail. Enable Phone audio for the device, then place a test call (Google, Fix Bluetooth problems on Android).

If the problem only happens in one location

Location-specific problems usually come from the network. Samsung recommends trying another location when an outgoing-audio issue occurs only in a specific place (Samsung, The person you are calling cannot hear you). Walls, lifts, underground stations, and crowded areas can all weaken a cellular signal.

Compare cellular with Wi-Fi Calling

On a compatible phone and carrier, Wi-Fi Calling can route calls over a Wi-Fi network instead of the cellular connection. This is useful only where your Wi-Fi is stable. Google notes that availability depends on the carrier, that charges may apply, and that the phone may turn the feature off if it detects Wi-Fi Calling problems (Google, Make calls over Wi-Fi). Samsung also warns that a weak Wi-Fi connection can affect call quality.

Cellular call from another location Whether location is the cause Works only if you can reach a different spot

Bluetooth device Whether the problem is tied to the accessory Needs the device’s Phone audio setting enabled

Clear Calling is a Pixel-only option

Clear Calling is a Pixel-specific feature in the Pixel Phone app on Pixel 7 and later. Google says it filters background noise during calls and that the processing happens on the Pixel device. Google also says it depends on call bandwidth, so it may not make a noticeable difference on every call. It is not a general Android toggle, and Google’s documentation does not extend it to third-party calling apps. If you use a different phone, the steps above are the relevant checks.

Hands-free earbuds as a workaround

Google documents using Pixel Buds to make and manage phone calls (Google, Make phone calls with Pixel Buds). Earbuds can be a practical choice if holding the phone near your mouth is inconvenient. They do not fix a blocked phone microphone, weak network coverage, or a faulty earpiece on the phone, and their compatibility depends on your phone model and software version.

When to get manufacturer or carrier help

  • The problem persists across several locations after you remove accessories and reset the call output.
  • Your test recording is still muffled or silent with Bluetooth off and no case fitted.
  • The same problem appears with a second, known-good accessory, which points toward the phone rather than the accessory.
  • Calls are unreliable in one location even with Wi-Fi Calling enabled, which suggests a network issue your carrier should investigate.
  • The phone shows physical damage, liquid exposure, or a cracked microphone or speaker opening.

Contact your phone maker’s support team for hardware faults, and your carrier for network or Wi-Fi Calling issues. Keep notes of the location, date, time, and the accessories you tested, because those details make the problem easier for support staff to reproduce.
