The iPhone 18 Pro’s most important change is its camera. The 48MP Fusion Main camera has a variable aperture that adjusts automatically or can be set by hand. Published hands-on reviews describe it as a strong camera phone with real trade-offs, and Apple’s own launch material supports the feature. What the available evidence does not establish is that it is the best camera smartphone of 2026 overall. No standardized, market-wide ranking compares current rivals on identical scenes, so “best” is only meaningful here for specific photo situations. This article explains what the camera change does, what reviewers observed, how battery and performance compare with the iPhone 17 Pro, and how to decide whether the price and upgrade make sense for you.
What changed in the camera
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026. The headline camera change is a 48MP Fusion Main camera with a new sensor and six laser-cut blades that move between aperture settings. In Apple’s description, the lens can select its aperture automatically, and users can also pick one of four aperture settings manually in the Camera app. Apple adds that an API makes aperture control available to developers. Apple’s launch release is the primary source for these product details.

Automatic or manual aperture
Leave the setting on automatic and the phone chooses the aperture for each scene. Switch to manual when you want to decide the trade-off yourself. The manual options are the only way to control the look of a shot at the lens level; the automatic mode is the default experience most buyers will use.

What a variable aperture changes in practice
A wider aperture lets in more light, while a narrower aperture increases depth of field, keeping more of the scene in focus. Tom’s Guide describes the same choice in these terms. Apple says the system is designed to help with lighting, depth of field, low-light photography, and detail in group photos. Those are Apple’s stated aims, not guarantees that every shot improves.

| Aperture direction | What it does | Where it is expected to matter |
|---|---|---|
| Wider | Admits more light | Low-light scenes, where Tom’s Guide reported improved detail in some comparisons |
| Narrower | Increases depth of field, keeping more of the frame sharp | Scenes where you want more of the subject, or a group, in focus; Apple lists group-photo detail among its goals |
The practical gain depends on the scene and on whether you adjust the setting or leave it automatic. Treat the table as a description of the control, not a promise about output.
Apple’s launch language reflects the company’s own positioning. Apple SVP of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak said: “With iPhone 18 Pro, we’ve made advancements to the areas our users care about most: camera, performance, battery, and intelligence. And we didn’t just make incremental improvements in these areas — we took huge leaps forward to create the best Pro iPhone we’ve ever made.” That is an executive characterization of the product, not independent evidence about its photos or battery life.
Does the camera make it the best camera smartphone?
The published reviews support a narrower conclusion than the headline. They show the iPhone 18 Pro is a serious camera phone in several scenarios, and they show that rivals can win in others. They do not show a universal camera winner.

What reviewers observed
- Tom’s Guide tested camera modes including variable aperture and compared image samples. It reported improved detail in some low-light comparisons. In other scenes, it described differences in color and detail against a Samsung competitor. Its observations are scene-specific and should not be read as a general camera ranking.
- TechRadar describes a week-long evaluation that covered the rear cameras at multiple focal lengths, variable aperture, Pro controls, Night and Portrait modes, video, and the 18MP Center Stage front camera. TechRadar’s review documents the scope of its testing, not a standardized result that can be compared directly with other publications.
Why “best” needs a qualifier
A camera ranking depends on which scenes and criteria are weighted. A phone that wins a low-light comparison can lose on color rendering or zoom, and the reverse is also true. Because the available sources do not compare current rivals using the same scenes and methods, the honest claim is that the iPhone 18 Pro is a strong contender whose strengths are concentrated in specific areas.

How to run your own camera comparison
- List the three or four photo situations you actually encounter, such as indoor evening light, group shots, portraits, zoomed subjects, and video.
- Shoot the same scene on each phone at the same time, from the same position, and in the same mode.
- For the iPhone, test both automatic aperture and one manual setting, so you can see whether the control changes the result for your scenes.
- Compare skin tones and color at 100% zoom on the same display, since rendering differences show up most clearly there.
- Check video separately; a phone that wins still photos can differ on motion.
Battery and performance
Apple says the A20 Pro chip and a next-generation vapor chamber help sustain performance, and it describes Pro Max battery life as the largest battery-life increase in its iPhone history. Those are Apple’s claims. Tom’s Guide ran its own tests and reported the following results.
| Model | iPhone 17 generation (average) | iPhone 18 generation (average) |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | 15 hours 21 minutes (17 Pro) | 16 hours 17 minutes (18 Pro) |
| Pro Max | 17 hours 54 minutes (17 Pro Max) | 18 hours 27 minutes (18 Pro Max) |
These figures come from Tom’s Guide’s continuous web-surfing test over 5G at 150 nits. On that test, the 18 Pro ran about 56 minutes longer than the 17 Pro, and the 18 Pro Max about 33 minutes longer than the 17 Pro Max. Tom’s Guide’s full review sets out the test conditions, which you should cite alongside any figure.
In the same review’s 3DMark Wild Life Extreme stress test, stability was 62.8% for the iPhone 18 Pro and 79.4% for the Pro Max. Tom’s Guide reported only a 1.7% gain between the 17 Pro and 18 Pro in that test. None of these numbers is a general-use battery promise or a universal benchmark result. They describe one publication’s controlled tests, and your own results will depend on usage, network, and settings.

Size, display, weight, and durability
- Display: Tom’s Guide describes 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch panels with 120Hz refresh. It also reported that its own measured brightness differed from the rated maximum, so check its figures if peak brightness matters to you.
- Weight: Tom’s Guide measured the iPhone 18 Pro at 211g and the 18 Pro Max at 249g, both heavier than their 17 Pro counterparts. Handling is a real consideration for one-handed photography.
- Cases: Tom’s Guide says existing iPhone 17 Pro cases fit the new models. Confirm the exact model and case compatibility before buying an accessory.
- Water resistance: Apple’s specifications page lists an IP68 rating under IEC 60529, with a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. This is a laboratory rating, not a guarantee against all water damage. Apple Support’s specifications page has the full wording.
- Apple Intelligence and Siri: Apple describes AI features on the new models. Availability can depend on language, geography, software version, and rollout, so check current Apple support details before relying on a specific feature.
Is it worth buying or upgrading?
The answer depends on which of three situations describes you. The evidence is strongest for the camera feature and weakest for any claim that the phone is a clear upgrade on every measure.
If you shoot mostly in low light or want control over depth of field
This is where the variable aperture is most likely to justify the price. Test the phone in the scenes you shoot most often, using the comparison steps above, before paying the premium over a cheaper camera phone.

The reasons to upgrade are narrower than the launch material suggests. The camera feature is the main new capability in the published reviews. The battery gain in Tom’s Guide’s web test is meaningful but modest, and its stress-test gain is small. If you do not shoot in the conditions where aperture control helps, the upgrade case is weak.
If you want a single “best camera phone” answer
The sources do not provide one. Choose by use case, and compare the iPhone 18 Pro against the rivals you are considering using the same scenes, the same settings, and the same display for judging color.
