Google Assistant routines and Gemini automations are not interchangeable. A Google Assistant routine is a preconfigured Google Home workflow: you select a specific starter, such as a voice phrase, time, sunrise, dismissed alarm, device event, presence state or an in-app tap, then attach defined actions. Gemini can invoke some of those routines through a conversational request, but Google says certain starters and actions are unsupported and that multi-step actions needing back-and-forth clarification do not work.
Gemini also has a separate, limited beta for operating selected Android apps through multi-step tasks. That beta began with Pixel 10-series and Samsung Galaxy S26-series phones in the United States and South Korea, and is distinct from ordinary Google Home routines. For predictable smart-home sequences, an existing Assistant routine remains the safer choice; for natural-language requests, screen-aware help and selected app tasks, Gemini is the more flexible interface when your account, language, device and region are eligible.

The short answer
On Android, Assistant routines are rule-based automations with explicit triggers and actions. You build the sequence in Google Home, and the same defined steps run whenever the chosen starter occurs. Gemini changes the interaction model: you ask in ordinary language, and Gemini may start a connected Google Home routine or handle a request directly. That convenience comes with compatibility limits.
Gemini is not a complete replacement for every Assistant routine. A routine that depends on an unsupported starter, an unsupported action or a clarification dialogue may fail to run through Gemini. Some familiar Assistant capabilities are also different or unavailable in Gemini, including certain podcast, news and radio providers, some third-party music providers and Interpreter mode.

Google is separately testing Gemini multi-step task automation on Android. It is an app-operating experiment, not a universal migration path for Google Home routines.
What an Assistant routine actually is
Fixed starters
An Assistant routine begins with a starter that you choose in the Google Home routine editor. The documented starter categories include:
- Voice phrase: a phrase you say to launch the routine.
- Time: a scheduled time, with day or date choices where the routine editor supports them.
- Sunrise or sunset: an event tied to the local solar schedule.
- Dismissed alarm: the routine starts after an alarm is dismissed.
- Device event: a qualifying event from a connected device.
- Presence state: a household or device presence change.
- In-app tap: a manual launch from the Google Home interface.
The important characteristic is determinism: the starter is explicit, and the routine does not need to guess what you mean at run time. If you use a voice phrase, the phrase is associated with that routine rather than interpreted as an open-ended conversation.
Predefined actions
After selecting a starter, you add actions. Depending on the devices and services linked to your account, a routine can control smart-home equipment, play media, provide information, make announcements, send messages or run a command that Assistant understands. The routine editor exposes the available actions; availability is not identical for every account, device or region.
Because each action is configured ahead of time, you can inspect the sequence before relying on it. A morning routine might turn on lights, adjust a thermostat, announce weather information and play media in a selected room. It is still one saved workflow with one defined order, rather than a new plan generated from each utterance.
How Gemini changes the interaction model
Conversational requests instead of a routine list
Gemini is designed as a conversational assistant. You can ask a question, describe an outcome or request that a connected Google Home routine start by voice or text. Gemini interprets the wording and decides whether it can answer directly, call a connected capability or invoke a routine.

This is useful when you do not remember an exact routine name or when the request includes context. It is less predictable than a visible routine tile or a known voice phrase because the request must be understood by Gemini and then mapped to a supported routine. Google warns that some routine starters and actions are unsupported when Gemini is involved.

Back-and-forth clarification is a boundary
Some Assistant commands work by asking a follow-up question, waiting for your answer and then completing the action. Gemini does not support multi-step routine actions that require this kind of back-and-forth clarification. A saved routine can therefore contain an action that works when launched through Assistant but cannot be completed through a Gemini-triggered request.
If the routine depends on information that is not already specified, rewrite it with fixed values where possible or launch it using the original Assistant path. Do not assume that a natural-language request can supply every missing parameter inside an existing routine.
Assistant routines, Gemini-triggered routines and Gemini app tasks compared
| Dimension | Google Assistant routine | Gemini-triggered Google Home routine | Gemini multi-step Android task beta |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it starts | Explicit starter such as a phrase, time, sunrise/sunset, dismissed alarm, device event, presence state or in-app tap. | A voice or text request to Gemini that identifies a connected routine. | A natural-language task request in Gemini. |
| Primary scope | Google Home devices and Assistant-supported commands. | The same connected Google Home ecosystem, subject to Gemini compatibility. | Selected Android apps, initially in food, grocery and rideshare categories. |
| Action model | Preselected smart-home, media, information, announcement, messaging and Assistant-command actions. | Existing routine actions that Gemini supports; some starters and actions are excluded. | Gemini operates an app in a constrained virtual window to complete a task. |
| Clarification | Configured values can run without a new dialogue. | Multi-step actions requiring back-and-forth clarification are not supported. | The task runs with visible progress and can stop when you interrupt it. |
| Predictability | Highest for a fixed sequence you have tested. | Depends on both routine compatibility and Gemini’s interpretation of the request. | Beta behavior depends on eligible hardware, country and supported apps. |
| Availability | Depends on Google Home, linked devices, account and regional support. | Varies by language, account type, device state and region. | Initially Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Samsung Galaxy S26-series devices in the United States and South Korea. |
Can Gemini run your old Assistant routines?
Sometimes. Gemini can start a connected Google Home routine by voice or text, but it does not guarantee parity with every routine you created under Assistant. The practical test is the routine editor and an actual launch on your account.
Existing routines are most likely to remain useful when they use straightforward, already configured starters and actions: a voice phrase that controls lights, a schedule that changes devices, or a tap that runs a fixed scene. Compatibility becomes uncertain when the routine uses an unsupported starter, an action Gemini does not expose, or a command that expects a follow-up exchange.
Keep the original routine while you test. A routine that works through Gemini on one phone, language or account should not be treated as proof that it will work for every household. Availability can differ by account type, device state and country.

Assistant capabilities that may be different in Gemini
Media providers
Gemini does not preserve every media integration that users may remember from Assistant. Google identifies certain podcast, news and radio providers as unsupported or different, and some third-party music providers may not be available. If a routine starts media playback, check the provider and playback action rather than assuming that the old Assistant behavior carries over.
Interpreter mode
Interpreter mode is one of the familiar Assistant capabilities that is not available in the same way in Gemini. If your workflow depends on live spoken interpretation, treat that as a separate capability decision rather than a routine-compatibility issue.
Assistant commands behind Gemini
Gemini still relies on Google Assistant for parts of the Android voice experience. With Hey Google and Voice Match enabled, Assistant detects the activation phrase, recognizes the speaker and routes the request to Gemini. Some quick voice actions can continue to work while the phone is locked when the relevant lock-screen setting is enabled.

It does not mean that every Assistant feature has been copied into Gemini, nor that every routine action has the same support.
What the new Gemini multi-step automation beta does
Google announced Gemini’s newer multi-step Android task automation beta on February 25, 2026. It is separate from Google Home routines and from simply asking Gemini to start an existing routine.
Supported launch hardware and regions
The initial beta hardware named by Google is:
- Google Pixel 10
- Google Pixel 10 Pro
- Google Pixel 10 Pro XL
- Samsung Galaxy S26-series devices
The initial countries are the United States and South Korea. Having one of the named phone families does not by itself guarantee access; the feature also depends on account eligibility, software rollout and the supported app list.

How a task runs
Gemini opens and operates the required app in a constrained virtual window. You can see progress notifications while it works. The task ends when the requested operation is complete, or earlier if you interrupt it. This design gives you a visible handoff and a stop point instead of silently allowing an unrestricted sequence of app interactions.

What it is not
The beta is not a replacement for every Google Home starter, device event or presence rule. It is also not a promise that Gemini can operate any app on any Android phone. The first rollout names selected food, grocery and rideshare apps, so a request outside the supported categories or outside the eligible region may not be available.
How to check a routine before relying on Gemini
- Open the Google Home app and enter the routine editor. Select the routine you want to keep using. The exact tab label can change with app versions, so use the area where your saved automations are listed.
- Record the starter. Note whether it is a voice phrase, schedule, solar event, dismissed alarm, device event, presence state or in-app tap.
- List every action in order. Separate smart-home controls, media, information, announcements, messages and Assistant commands. A single unsupported action can prevent the complete sequence from behaving as expected.
- Look for actions that need a dialogue. If an action normally asks you to supply or confirm information, do not assume Gemini can complete it inside the routine.
- Test the routine from its original control. Run it from the saved phrase or Google Home interface first. This confirms that the routine itself and its linked devices still work.
- Test a Gemini request separately. Ask Gemini to run the same named routine by voice and by text. Test from the lock screen only after confirming the applicable lock-screen and Voice Match settings.
- Keep a fallback. Leave the routine tile, original voice phrase or scheduled starter available until Gemini performs reliably for the situations that matter to you.
Availability requirements on Android
There is no single “Gemini phone” requirement for ordinary conversational use. Google has made the Gemini mobile app available in more than 40 languages and more than 200 countries, but feature support still varies by device, account and region. A phone that can run the Gemini app may not support every Google Home routine action or the multi-step task beta.
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Language | Gemini features and routine handling can vary by supported language. | Use a language supported for the feature you need, not merely one in which the app opens. |
| Account type | Some capabilities are restricted by account status or rollout eligibility. | Confirm that the Google account controlling Home devices is the account active in Gemini. |
| Device state | Voice routing, lock-screen actions and beta access depend on phone state and settings. | Check Hey Google, Voice Match and any setting that permits the relevant locked-screen action. |
| Country | Rollouts and app-operation tasks are geographically limited. | For the multi-step beta, verify that the phone is in the United States or South Korea and that the account is included. |
| Linked services | Routines can only control devices and services connected to Google Home. | Confirm the device is online and the media or messaging service remains linked. |
Which approach should you use?
Keep an Assistant routine when consistency matters
- You need a schedule, alarm dismissal, presence change or device event to trigger the sequence automatically.
- The sequence controls several devices in a known order.
- You need a saved in-app button that household members can tap.
- The routine uses media, messaging or another action whose Gemini support has not been confirmed.
- You cannot tolerate a conversational interpretation failure at a fixed time.
Use Gemini when the request is variable
- You want to ask for information or help without remembering an exact command.
- You need screen-aware assistance rather than a fixed Google Home sequence.
- You want to start a compatible routine by voice or text and have Gemini interpret the wording.
- You have access to the multi-step task beta and your request involves one of its supported apps.
Use both instead of forcing a migration
There is no requirement to delete your routines when moving to Gemini. A practical arrangement is to retain Assistant routines for alarms, schedules, presence and household scenes, while using Gemini for open-ended questions and eligible app tasks. This preserves a deterministic fallback without giving up conversational help.
Troubleshooting common failures
Gemini cannot find the routine
Check that you are using the same Google account in Gemini and Google Home, then try the routine’s saved name or original phrase. If the routine launches from Google Home but not from Gemini, the problem is likely compatibility or request interpretation rather than the connected device itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe routine starts but stops partway through
Inspect each action in the routine editor. Remove or replace the action that Gemini does not support, especially one involving a provider or a clarification dialogue. Test the shortened routine before rebuilding the full sequence.

Voice activation behaves differently from typing
Voice requests pass through Hey Google and Voice Match, while typed requests do not use the same activation path. Confirm Voice Match and the relevant lock-screen setting, then compare a typed Gemini request with an unlocked voice request.
The multi-step beta is missing
Check the hardware, country, account eligibility and supported app requirements. The initial announcement covers Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Samsung Galaxy S26-series devices in the United States and South Korea; other phones or countries may not have access yet.
A task needs your input while Gemini is operating an app
That may be outside the supported automation flow. The beta is intended to run a constrained sequence and provide progress notifications, not to guarantee completion of every app flow that asks an unexpected question or confirmation.
Control and visibility in Gemini app tasks
The beta’s constrained virtual window makes the app interaction visible rather than hiding every step. Progress notifications show that Gemini is still working, and you can interrupt the task before completion. Those controls are specific to the app-operating beta; they do not turn an ordinary Google Home routine into a live, improvisational conversation.
For household automations, review the saved starter and actions before granting a new conversational path access to them. A routine’s predictable behavior comes from the values you configured, while Gemini adds an interpretation layer that can vary with wording and support status.
How Google’s transition fits together
Google Assistant launched in 2016. In a March 14, 2025 announcement, Brian Marquardt, Senior Director of Product Management for the Gemini app, wrote: “We’re upgrading Google Assistant users on mobile to Gemini, offering a new kind of help only possible with the power of AI.” That upgrade describes the mobile assistant experience, not the disappearance of every Google Home automation.
Gemini’s mobile app availability—more than 40 languages and more than 200 countries according to Google’s 2025 announcement—also should not be read as universal feature parity. The routine editor, connected devices, account type, language, device state and country continue to determine what works. The February 2026 task beta adds another layer with its own hardware, app and regional limits.

Assistant routines remain the dependable choice for explicit triggers and fixed smart-home sequences. Gemini is a more natural conversational entry point and can launch some routines, but unsupported starters, unsupported actions and clarification-based steps prevent one-to-one compatibility. Its newer app-operating automations are a narrowly scoped beta for selected phones, countries and apps—not a universal replacement. Keep critical routines, verify each action in the editor and treat Gemini access as capability-specific rather than guaranteed by the phone model alone.
