For most people using a Mac for writing, research, documents, planning, and connected office work, Claude Desktop is the better default. Its documented Projects, local desktop extensions, and remote connectors are organized around recurring knowledge work. Google Antigravity is the stronger choice when your day is dominated by software development, terminal-style tool execution, multi-file edits, code review, and orchestrated agents.
That is a workflow recommendation, not a speed or answer-quality benchmark. No independent head-to-head benchmark, battery test, reliability study, or privacy audit establishes that either app is universally faster, smarter, or safer. The most useful decision is to run both against a few representative tasks from your own Mac.

If you want one installation first, choose Claude Desktop for general office and personal knowledge work. Choose Antigravity first if your normal work already involves repositories, terminals, pull-request-style review, scripts, or several agents working on artifacts.

Google describes Antigravity 2.0 as “a new, standalone desktop application that fully delivers on a truly agent-optimized experience,” available on macOS, Linux, and Windows. The application is designed for agents rather than a chat window alone. You can interact with agents synchronously while they work, let them run asynchronously, inspect the artifacts they produce, and provide feedback on those artifacts.

Those capabilities are useful when the output is a code change, a tested file set, a generated artifact, or a repeatable technical procedure rather than a single answer.
Antigravity also documents skills, MCP servers, and Google-ecosystem integrations. The exact integrations, model availability, quotas, and permissions can vary by plan, so confirm the current entitlement before committing to a workflow. The reviewed official material does not state one universal minimum macOS version for Antigravity, although the app is available for Mac.
Where it can feel excessive
A nontechnical user may encounter concepts such as agent delegation, execution workspaces, artifacts, tool permissions, and multi-file diffs before they have a reason to use them. That is not a defect for an engineer, but it can add setup and decision overhead to a task such as rewriting a letter or summarizing a folder.

Claude Desktop is Anthropic’s Mac application for working with Claude across conversations, local resources, and connected services. Anthropic’s current installation documentation lists macOS 11 (Big Sur) or newer as the minimum supported operating system.
Local desktop extensions
Desktop extensions can connect Claude to resources on the computer, including local files, calendars, email, messaging, and other desktop data. Anthropic distinguishes these from remote connectors. A local extension can keep the work on the computer and can organize files or summarize folders; the exact data it can read or change depends on the extension and the permissions you grant.
Remote connectors
Remote connectors reach services hosted in the cloud. Anthropic’s guidance gives examples such as Asana, Linear, Notion, PayPal, and Plaid, alongside other services. A connector is not the same as unrestricted access: you still authenticate the service, approve the requested scopes, and remain subject to the connector’s and plan’s availability. Check the current connector list before designing a process around one service.
Claude Cowork
Anthropic’s product overview describes Claude Cowork as a desktop application where Claude works across local files and connected apps to complete multi-step projects. That makes the app suitable for tasks such as gathering source material, drafting a document, revising it against instructions, and preparing a set of files for review.

How the two assistants map to everyday Mac work
Writing and editing
Claude Desktop is the more natural starting point for briefs, proposals, meeting notes, copy editing, and long documents. Put the recurring style rules, terminology, examples, and reference files in a Project, then keep related conversations there. The persistent project context reduces the need to restate the same background in every chat.
Antigravity can write and transform text, but its documented center of gravity is agent execution and technical artifacts. It becomes attractive when writing is part of a larger automated process, such as generating documentation from a repository, updating many structured files, or running a repeatable content pipeline.
Research and synthesis
Claude’s local extensions let it work from folders on your Mac, while remote connectors can bring in approved information from cloud tools. This is useful when the research set is a mixture of PDFs, notes, calendars, and project records. A Project gives the work a stable home for instructions and accumulated conversations.
Antigravity is a better fit for research that benefits from tools and execution: collecting data through configured services, running scripts, inspecting generated artifacts, or having agents perform several technical steps. Its workflow is more capable when the research question ends in an executable result rather than only a narrative summary.
Planning and personal organization
For a weekly plan, a decision memo, or a recurring planning process, Claude Projects make continuity explicit. You can keep the goals, constraints, reference material, and prior decisions together. Local extensions can help organize files or summarize a folder when you grant access.
Antigravity can orchestrate a plan involving several agents or tools, but you may need to define the workspace, permissions, artifact checks, and execution sequence. That overhead pays off when the same plan runs repeatedly or touches technical systems; it is less compelling for a one-off checklist.
Connected office work
Claude has two documented integration paths: local extensions for desktop resources and remote connectors for cloud services. This distinction helps you decide where data is processed and what authentication is required. A calendar or folder task can stay local; a task involving a cloud service uses that service’s connector and permissions.

Antigravity documents tool execution, skills, MCP servers, and Google ecosystem integrations. The breadth can be valuable for a technical team, but do not assume that a connector, MCP server, or model is included in every tier. Verify the specific integration and plan before purchase.
Coding and code review
Antigravity has the clearer product fit. Its stated features cover autonomous coding agents, inline completions, multi-file editing, tool executions, and full diff reviews in a dedicated execution workspace. Those are the operations developers perform repeatedly: inspect a codebase, make coordinated changes, run tools, and review the resulting diff.
Claude Desktop can still assist with code through files, Projects, and connected tools, especially for explaining a codebase, drafting a design, or reviewing selected files. The distinction is that Antigravity makes the repository-and-agent loop the primary experience, whereas Claude Desktop makes general knowledge work the primary experience.
Context, continuity, and long projects
Claude Projects
Projects are paid-plan workspaces with their own chat histories, uploaded knowledge, and project instructions. Anthropic says Projects automatically use retrieval-augmented generation as the content grows and can expand knowledge capacity by up to 10x. In practical terms, you can keep adding reference material without pasting the entire collection into every prompt; Claude retrieves relevant portions when answering.
Anthropic also lists a 1-million-token context window in beta for Claude Sonnet 4.6 in 2026. Beta availability, model access, and effective limits can change, so treat that figure as a capability of the specified model and access period, not a guarantee for every conversation or plan.
Antigravity sessions, workspaces, and artifacts
Antigravity emphasizes sessions, workspaces, artifacts, and agent orchestration rather than a single persistent Project concept. A session can direct an agent, a workspace can hold the technical context, and an artifact gives you something concrete to inspect and revise. This model is powerful for multi-step execution, especially when several agents or tools contribute to a result.
The trade-off is that continuity depends on how you organize those workspaces and sessions. If your recurring work is mostly documents and institutional knowledge, Claude’s Project structure is easier to understand. If continuity means preserving a runnable technical environment and its generated files, Antigravity’s artifact-oriented approach may be more useful.

Models and answer quality
Antigravity’s model documentation lists Gemini and partner models, including Claude models, with access dependent on the plan. That gives a technical user a way to select a provider or model suited to a particular task, but the menu and quotas are not fixed across all plans.
Claude Desktop provides Anthropic’s model lineup, with paid plans providing access to more models and higher usage than the free tier. A larger model or context window can help with difficult work, but model names alone do not establish that one application will produce better results for your files.

Integrations and data boundaries
Using local files with Claude
- Install the Mac application on a supported system running macOS 11 (Big Sur) or newer.
- Open the desktop extension controls and select the local-file capability you need.
- Grant access only to the folders or resources required for the task.
- Ask Claude to list the files it can see before requesting a summary or transformation; this catches an incorrect folder or missing permission early.
- Review any generated or changed files outside the chat before replacing originals.
Local processing does not mean every operation is risk-free. An extension can still expose information through the model interaction, and a tool that can write files can make broad changes if you approve them. Use a copy of important material and narrow permissions.
Connecting cloud services with Claude
- Open the connector controls and choose the service supported for your account.
- Authenticate with that service and inspect the permissions or scopes shown during authorization.
- Start with a read-only request, such as locating a document or summarizing a project, to confirm the connection.
- Only then approve an action that creates, edits, sends, or moves data.
- Disconnect the service when the project no longer needs it, especially on a shared Mac.
Remote connectors depend on the service, the connector implementation, and your Claude plan. A service named in Anthropic’s guidance is an example of documented support, not a promise that every account has the same access.
Using tools with Antigravity
Antigravity’s tool execution, skills, MCP servers, and Google integrations are designed for agents that can perform operations rather than only answer questions. Before running an agent on a real project, identify the tools it can call, the files it can modify, and how you will inspect its artifacts and diffs. For production code or sensitive data, use a separate workspace or a version-controlled copy so you can revert mistakes.

Subscriptions are only part of the cost. A connector may require a separate service account, a higher tier may be needed for a model or quota, and an agent that performs real work can require more supervision than a chat response. Check regional taxes, billing cadence, usage ceilings, and cancellation terms on the current plan pages before paying.
A practical two-app trial
Because there is no neutral benchmark, a short trial using your own work is more informative than a generic ranking. Use the same files, prompts, and success criteria in each app.
- Select four representative tasks. Include one document edit, one folder-based research task, one connected-service task if you need integrations, and one technical or automation task.
- Prepare clean copies. Use duplicate files or a test repository. Do not give either application unrestricted access to irreplaceable originals.
- Record the setup. Note the Mac model and macOS version, the plan, the model selected, enabled extensions or tools, and whether the task required a paid feature.
- Give identical objectives. State the desired output, constraints, source files, and definition of done. Avoid changing the task to favor one product.
- Score the result. Check factual accuracy, formatting, completeness, number of corrections, time spent supervising, and whether the assistant changed anything outside scope.
- Test recovery. Deliberately give one incomplete instruction or deny one permission. Prefer the app that explains the problem and resumes safely.
- Calculate the recurring effort. Include subscription cost, time spent preparing context, connector setup, review time, and the value of any automation.
For a general user, weight document quality, file handling, and ease of repeating a Project more heavily than raw tool count. For a developer, weight diff quality, command execution, multi-file consistency, and the ability to inspect and revert artifacts.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Assuming every feature is included
Projects are tied to Claude paid plans, while Antigravity’s models, integrations, and quotas depend on Google AI or enterprise tiers. Read the entitlement for the exact account and region. If a feature is unavailable, do not redesign your workflow around an assumption that it will be added automatically.
Granting too much access
Local extensions, remote connectors, MCP servers, and execution tools can all expand what an assistant can read or change. Start with a narrow folder, a test account, or a disposable workspace. Review scopes and tool permissions before approving a write or send action.
Confusing a long context window with permanent memory
A large context window helps a model process more material in one interaction. It does not replace clear Project instructions, organized source files, or a record of decisions. Keep authoritative information in the appropriate Project, workspace, or repository instead of relying on an old chat being remembered indefinitely.
Letting agents run without artifact review
Antigravity’s asynchronous agents can continue while you do other work, but autonomy increases the need for checkpoints. Inspect diffs, generated files, tool logs, and test results before accepting changes. A successful execution is not proof that the output meets your requirements.
Expecting a universal speed winner
Network conditions, model selection, prompt length, file count, connector latency, and plan limits can dominate the experience. Measure the tasks you actually perform rather than extrapolating from a single response.

Choose Claude Desktop first if you are a general knowledge worker
- Your main outputs are documents, plans, summaries, briefs, or correspondence.
- You want a persistent place for instructions, reference files, and related conversations.
- You need to work with local folders and selected cloud services without building an agent workflow.
- You prefer a chat-first interface with optional extensions and connectors.
Choose Google Antigravity first if you are a developer or technical power user
- You spend most of the day in repositories, scripts, terminals, or structured technical projects.
- You need inline completion, multi-file edits, tool execution, and full diff review.
- You want agents to run synchronously or asynchronously and produce inspectable artifacts.

Use both when the boundary is clear
A mixed workflow can be sensible: Claude Desktop for a Project’s briefs, requirements, and source material; Antigravity for implementation, repository changes, and artifact review.
