Its two main experiences are AI Overviews, which offer a quick snapshot in Search results, and AI Mode, which supports deeper exploration and follow-up questions.
What does Google AI search mean?
Google AI search refers broadly to AI-powered features within Google Search. Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as experiences powered by its Gemini models. The phrase itself does not identify one particular feature, so it helps to name the one you mean.

Google’s overview of AI features in Search describes AI Overviews as a snapshot of key information with links for further exploration, while AI Mode is for asking questions, exploring topics and continuing with follow-ups.
How are AI Overviews and AI Mode different?
| What to compare | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Placement and format | An AI-generated snapshot that may appear within Search results when Google’s systems determine it could help. | A conversational search experience for exploring questions and topics. |
| Depth of interaction | Designed to provide a quick overview with links to explore further. | Supports follow-up questions and deeper exploration across web sources. |
| Inputs and search approach | Presents a summary with links. | Accepts text, voice, images and files. Google says it may break a question into subtopics and search for them simultaneously across data sources. |
Google also documents moving from an AI Overview into AI Mode to ask follow-ups while keeping the original search context. In a January 2026 announcement, Google said this transition was available on mobile globally. Availability and interface details can change.

How does Google AI search work?
At a high level, Google says generative AI learns patterns and structures from training data and uses them to create new outputs. Its explanation of AI Mode says the feature draws on Search’s understanding of web information and may use “query fan-out”: for a multi-part question, it searches related subtopics together and brings the results into a response.
That is Google’s high-level description, not a complete account of the system’s implementation. It explains the intended process, but it does not establish that every response captures all relevant information or interprets sources correctly.
Can you rely on AI-generated answers?
Not without checking them. Google Search Help warns that “AI Overviews can and will make mistakes,” and its AI Mode help says the feature “doesn’t always get it right.” Treat an answer as a starting point rather than a guaranteed fact.

- Open the linked sources and check whether they support the specific claim.
- Compare more than one reliable source, especially for details that affect health, money, safety or important decisions.
- Look for the original source when a summary refers to a claim, announcement or firsthand account.
Links are useful routes to further reading, not proof that every sentence in a generated response is accurate.

Google’s AI Search features continue to evolve, so model and interface details should be read as dated updates rather than permanent definitions.
- January 27, 2026: Google announced that Gemini 3 became the default model for AI Overviews globally. The announcement also described follow-up questions from an overview that can continue in AI Mode. See Google’s January 2026 announcement.
- May 6, 2026: Hema Budaraju, Google’s Vice President of Product Management, Search, announced changes intended to help users discover relevant websites and original content. Examples included further-reading suggestions, easier access to news-subscription links, and previews of perspectives from public discussions and firsthand sources. See Google’s May 2026 announcement.
These updates illustrate how the experience may change; they do not alter the basic distinction between a quick AI Overview and the more interactive AI Mode.
