If your ISP gateway cannot be put in bridge mode, the usual way to stop a second router from doing NAT is to switch that downstream router to Access Point (AP) mode—if your model supports it. The ISP gateway then handles routing, while the second device provides Wi-Fi and wired connections. Check both devices’ instructions first: menu names, setup steps, and available features vary by model.
What double NAT means—and when it matters
Network Address Translation (NAT) lets a router connect devices on a private network to the wider internet. Double NAT occurs when two devices on the connection perform NAT, commonly an ISP gateway followed by a separate router. Because they can create separate private networks, devices on opposite sides may be harder to reach from one another.

Double NAT is not automatically a performance problem. Google Home and Nest Help says most people do not notice a performance effect; it describes any added delay as on the order of milliseconds, without giving a specific range. The configuration can matter for online gaming, port forwarding, UPnP, or communication between devices on separate private networks. NETGEAR also lists possible issues with VPN connections, port forwarding and triggering, and some secure websites. These are potential symptoms, not proof that double NAT is the cause.
Check your network layout before changing settings
The common setup is ISP gateway first, then your own router. Double NAT is plausible if both devices are routing, but check their status pages or configuration if available. A second router used only as an access point is not the same as a second router performing NAT.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If your goal is simply to extend Wi-Fi coverage or add Ethernet ports, another router in routing mode may not be necessary. NETGEAR notes that an extender, mesh system, or unmanaged switch may better fit those needs.
Switch the downstream router to AP mode
AP mode is the practical option when bridge mode is unavailable on the ISP gateway and the second router supports AP mode. In this arrangement, the gateway remains the router; the downstream device stops handling routing and NAT. The precise setup—including how to connect the devices and handle the downstream device’s IP address—depends on its manufacturer and model.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Find the mode setting. In the downstream router’s administration settings, look for “Access Point mode,” “AP mode,” or a similar operating-mode option. Not every router offers it.
- Follow the model-specific setup. Apply the router maker’s instructions for the uplink connection and IP-address settings. For the NETGEAR models covered by its guide, the example path is Advanced > Advanced Setup > Wireless AP; labels and menus may differ on other models. NETGEAR’s example uses a dynamically assigned address from the existing router.
- Account for the gateway’s Wi-Fi. In its guidance for a NETGEAR router connected to an ISP gateway, NETGEAR says to turn off the gateway’s Wi-Fi when the NETGEAR router is used in AP mode. This is vendor-specific advice, not a universal requirement; check your gateway’s instructions before changing its wireless settings.
- Reconnect and check the original problem. Once the configuration is applied, reconnect devices and check the issue that led you to make the change—for example, whether devices can reach each other or whether a game or port-forwarded service works.
For model-specific guidance, see NETGEAR’s AP-mode instructions and ASUS’s explanation of router operation modes. Confirm your particular model supports the mode before relying on a generic menu path.

Know which features may change in AP mode
AP mode changes which device controls network functions. The ISP gateway takes over routing, and features on the downstream router may become unavailable. The exact changes are model-specific:

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- NETGEAR says guest network, website blocking, VPN service, and remote management are disabled on the routers covered by its AP-mode guidance.
- ASUS describes its AP mode as disabling firewall, IP sharing, and NAT by default.
These examples are not a universal list. Check the documentation for both devices to see which settings and services remain available in your setup.

Both approaches can remove one layer of routing, but they do so on different devices. Bridge mode on the ISP gateway, when available, disables its routing so the downstream router can handle it. AP mode instead leaves routing with the gateway and turns the downstream router into an access point.
