The practical goal is to make your pages crawlable, indexable, eligible to appear with a Search snippet, and genuinely useful to people. Google’s guidance addresses AI Overviews and AI Mode together; neither appears for every query, and inclusion depends on Google’s systems.
What makes a page eligible for an AI Overview?
Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in an AI Overview. That is an eligibility threshold, not a promise that Google will crawl, index, or show the page. AI Overviews appear when Google’s systems determine they add value to Search, so there is no universal query-by-query placement to target.

Google’s official guidance is direct: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” The foundation is ordinary Search accessibility and quality, not an AI-specific implementation. Developer checklist: make important pages accessible and useful
- Allow crawling. Check robots.txt and any CDN, firewall, or hosting rules that could block Googlebot from fetching important URLs.
- Make pages discoverable. Link important content from relevant pages on your site so crawlers and visitors can find it.
- Keep important information in text. Images and video can support a page, but make its essential information available as text. If JavaScript supplies the content, inspect what Google sees after rendering.
- Provide a good page experience. Treat this as part of a sound Search implementation, not an AI Overview ranking switch.
- Use accurate structured data when relevant. Ensure it describes content that is actually visible on the page and supports the Search feature you want to qualify for.
- Keep business details current where applicable. Maintain accurate Merchant Center or Business Profile information if your site uses those services.
Google lists these practices for its AI features in its AI features guidance. Its overview of how Search works describes crawling, rendering, indexing, and serving as distinct stages; a failure at an earlier stage can prevent a page from reaching later ones.

How to check whether Google can see a page
- Open URL Inspection in Search Console. Inspect the exact URL and review whether Google reports it as indexed and what it can access. Use the live test when you need to check current accessibility.
- Check crawl access. Review robots.txt and relevant CDN or hosting controls for unintended Googlebot blocks. Robots.txt controls crawling; it is not, by itself, a reliable way to keep a URL out of Google’s index.
- Look for indexing exclusions. Check the page’s robots directives for a noindex instruction. If you intend to keep a page out of the index, use noindex or access protection rather than relying on robots.txt alone.
- Inspect rendered output. If the page depends on JavaScript, confirm that its important text and links are present in the rendered version Google receives. JavaScript does not automatically make a page unindexable, but content Google cannot access or render cannot serve its purpose.
- Review snippet controls. Directives such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, and noindex can affect what Google displays or whether a page is eligible. After changing controls, inspect what Googlebot received and allow time for recrawling and processing.
Google says changes to controls may take several days to several months to be recrawled, depending on how often its systems determine a page needs refreshing. See Get started with Search: a developer’s guide and AI Features and Your Website.
Does your site need special schema for AI Overviews?
No. Google does not require special schema.org markup for AI Overviews. Structured data can still help a page qualify for a specific rich result in ordinary Search when Google supports that feature and the markup accurately reflects visible content. It does not guarantee a rich result or an AI Overview link.

Inaccurate or hidden-content markup and policy violations can make structured data ineligible; serious issues can lead to a manual action affecting rich result eligibility. Google says a structured data manual action does not affect ordinary web search ranking. Consult Google’s General Structured Data Guidelines before adding or changing markup.
What content is more useful to Search—and what is not a shortcut?
Google’s guidance emphasizes unique, compelling, useful, and reliable content that contributes a viewpoint or expertise, rather than repeating information already readily available. That does not mean inventing first-hand experience or claiming expertise you do not have. Explain what your page adds for its intended reader, and support factual claims appropriately.
Rank #3
There is no prescribed page length, mandatory chunking pattern, or need to rewrite content specifically for generative AI or capture every long-tail wording variant. Google says, “There’s no ideal page length, and in the end, make pages for your audience, not just for generative AI search.” Google Search also ignores llms.txt files for visibility or ranking. Inauthentic mentions of a topic are not a supported way to earn inclusion. These points are covered in Google’s Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features on Google Search.
AI-assisted publishing still needs quality and value
Google does not prohibit content simply because AI helped create it. The content still needs to meet Search Essentials and spam policies, with accuracy, quality, relevance, and value for users. Producing many low-value pages without adding user benefit can violate Google’s scaled content abuse policy. See Google Search’s Guidance on Generative AI Content on Your Website.
