Short answer: Google AI Mode Canvas work is automatically saved in your AI Mode history when history is enabled. It is not public by default, but it can become visible when you use the Share control. A user-generated Canvas app has a different privacy model: its creator can see data you submit, and anyone who has the app’s public link can view and edit data saved with it. Gemini’s activity controls let you review or delete chats, set automatic deletion, turn off Keep Activity, or use temporary chats, but Google says some information can still be retained to answer requests, protect users, and process feedback.
These are separate surfaces. AI Mode Canvas history, a shared AI Mode response, a user-generated Canvas app, Gemini Apps Activity, and Google Workspace sharing each have different audiences and controls.

At a glance: what is visible on each Canvas surface?
“Canvas” is used for more than one Google feature. The privacy setting that controls an AI Mode thread does not automatically control a web app made by another user, and a Gemini Apps Activity setting is not a universal delete switch for every copy of a project.

| Surface | What may be visible | Main control | Practical caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consumer AI Mode Canvas history | Your saved Canvas thread and the related AI Mode response in your account history | AI Mode history plus the three-dot Share and Delete controls beside a saved thread | Because changes are auto-saved, sensitive prompts can remain in history until you delete them or an applicable retention rule removes them. |
| Consumer sharing | The AI Mode response and Canvas content you deliberately send through a Share action | Share controls in the response or Canvas header | Review the snapshot before sending. Google’s help documentation describes the action but does not define one universal audience for every consumer link. |
| User-generated Canvas app | Data you submit to the app; the creator can see it and may store it in Firebase or another service | Do not submit confidential data unless you trust the creator and understand storage and deletion limits | Anyone with the public link can view and edit data saved with the app. After sharing, users cannot delete that data themselves. |
| Gemini account activity | Prompts, uploads, generated content, connected-app data, device information and location information covered by Google’s Privacy Notice | Gemini Apps Activity, auto-delete, Keep Activity and temporary chats | Turning off Keep Activity limits use for service improvement but does not eliminate all retention or safety processing. |
| Google Workspace | Gemini conversations and Canvases shared by link or through Drive | Admin Console > Generative AI > Gemini app > Sharing, plus organizational Drive rules | Public-link sharing is off by default. Previously shared public links remain accessible until an administrator or user deletes them from Gemini. |
How AI Mode Canvas saves your work
Changes are auto-saved when history is enabled
Google’s AI Mode help documentation says, “Important: Changes in Canvas are auto-saved.” In practice, edits to a Canvas project and the surrounding AI Mode response can be resumed from AI Mode history rather than existing only in the browser tab where you created them.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That convenience creates a retention question: a prompt containing a draft contract, internal notes or personal information can remain in the saved thread. Closing the tab does not replace deleting the saved conversation. The history setting and any account-level retention rules determine how long the thread remains available in your account.
Find, share or delete a saved Canvas thread
- Open Google Search’s AI Mode and go to AI Mode history.
- Locate the saved Canvas thread you want to manage.
- Open the three-dot menu beside that thread.
- Choose Share to create a shareable version, or choose Delete to remove the saved thread from your AI Mode history.
Deleting the AI Mode thread is the appropriate first step for removing it from your account history. It does not retroactively erase information that you entered into a separate user-generated app, copied elsewhere, or already disclosed through a link.
What happens when you share a Canvas?
Sharing is an explicit disclosure action
AI Mode and Canvas provide Share controls in the response or Canvas header. Until you use that control, the Canvas is part of your account experience rather than an automatically published page. Once you share, the content in the generated snapshot or link is outside the private boundary you were relying on, so treat the action as a disclosure.
Inspect the exact content before sending
Open the preview produced by Share and check the entire response, not just the visible paragraph. Canvas work can include earlier prompts, generated text, data tables, uploaded material or instructions that you did not intend to disclose. Remove confidential text from the project or create a clean copy before sharing.

Google’s consumer help page explains how to invoke sharing but does not promise one audience rule for every consumer link. The recipient experience can depend on the link type and the account or product context. Do not assume that a link is limited to one named person, or that deleting your local history will revoke every copy someone has already opened.
User-generated Canvas apps have a higher disclosure risk
The creator can see submitted data
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub states: “When you interact with a user-generated Canvas app, the creator of the app can see any data you share and can save it where they choose.” The creator might use a database such as Firebase, a spreadsheet, or another service. Google does not set a single retention period for every app creator.
For that reason, enter only information that you would be comfortable giving directly to the person or organization that built the app. A Canvas app that asks for a name, uploaded file, customer list, medical detail or company secret should be treated like an external web service, not like a private draft in your Google account.
Public links allow viewing and editing
Google also warns: “Anyone with the public link can also view and edit data saved with the app.” A link can therefore expose both the records you created and changes made by other visitors. If an app has a public URL, do not assume that obscurity protects the data; forwarding the URL is enough to broaden access.

You cannot remove app data after sharing
The Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says users cannot delete data after sharing it with a user-generated Canvas app. Deleting your AI Mode history or turning off Gemini activity does not give you control over a copy stored by the app creator. Ask the creator about storage, access and deletion before submitting anything sensitive; if those answers are unclear, do not submit it.
What Google may process from Gemini interactions
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, last updated October 13, 2026, lists prompts, uploaded content, generated content, connected-app data, device data and location information among the categories it processes. The notice also says that some data is reviewed by human reviewers.
Google’s warning is direct: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.” This is broader than Canvas text alone. An uploaded image, a connected service result or device and location context can be part of the interaction covered by the notice.
That processing description does not mean every prompt is manually reviewed or used in the same way. It does mean you should avoid putting secrets, regulated records or identifying information into a Canvas when you do not have a clear business or personal reason to disclose them.

Use Gemini controls to reduce retention and improvement use
Review or delete Gemini Apps Activity
- Open your Google Account’s Gemini Apps Activity controls.
- Review the saved conversations and remove individual items or activity within the available date range.
- Check the automatic deletion setting so it matches the retention period you want.
Google lists four choices for Gemini Apps Activity automatic deletion: 3 months, 18 months (the default identified in Google’s 2026 help documentation), 36 months, or indefinite. These choices govern the activity covered by that control; they should not be read as a guarantee that every Canvas copy, shared link or third-party app record expires on the same schedule.
Turn off Keep Activity
Turning off Keep Activity stops future chats from being reviewed to improve Google services, according to Google’s help guidance. This is the setting to use when your priority is limiting improvement use rather than keeping a long-term Gemini history.
Keep Activity off is not the same as “nothing is retained.” Google says it may still retain information needed to respond to requests, protect users and process feedback. Other product settings can also continue to save data. If you need a prompt to disappear from account history, delete the relevant activity or Canvas thread rather than relying only on the Keep Activity switch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse temporary chats for one-off work
Temporary chats provide another way to limit how a conversation is kept in your Gemini activity. They are useful for a one-time question or draft that you do not want added to your regular activity history. The same retention caveat applies: temporary treatment does not prevent all processing required to answer you, maintain safety or handle feedback.

Google Workspace adds administrator-controlled sharing
Where administrators manage the policy
For an organization using Google Workspace, an administrator can review sharing controls at Admin Console > Generative AI > Gemini app > Sharing. The organization’s policy can narrow who may open a link, whether external recipients are allowed and how Gemini content can be shared through Drive.
Public links are off by default
Google Workspace Help says, “Using public links to share conversations is turned off by default.” An administrator must enable that capability before users can rely on public-link sharing. Even when public links are disabled, Drive sharing rules still apply to conversations or Canvases shared through Drive, including restrictions on external users.
Previously shared links need separate cleanup
Changing the policy later does not automatically make an already distributed copy private. Google states that previously shared public links remain accessible until they are deleted from Gemini. If a sensitive Workspace Canvas was shared, remove the conversation or Canvas itself and ask the administrator to verify Drive and external-sharing permissions.
A practical privacy checklist before you use Canvas
- Identify the surface: Confirm whether you are editing an AI Mode Canvas, opening someone else’s user-generated app, or working in Workspace. The controls are not interchangeable.
- Classify the data: Remove passwords, API keys, customer records, health information, legal material and confidential company details unless your policy explicitly permits the disclosure.
- Check history: If the prompt should not persist, review AI Mode history and Gemini Apps Activity after the session.
- Choose a retention control: Set the activity auto-delete period, turn off Keep Activity or use a temporary chat according to the outcome you need.
- Review a share preview: Look for hidden instructions, earlier turns, uploaded files and personal details before sending a Canvas link.
- Vet app creators: For a user-generated app, ask who operates it, where data is stored, who can access it and how deletion works. If you cannot get a clear answer, do not submit sensitive data.
- Check Workspace policy: Ask your administrator whether public links and external Drive sharing are allowed before distributing a work Canvas.
Common privacy questions and the right control
“Can Google see my AI Mode Canvas?”
Google processes Gemini-related prompts and context under its Privacy Notice, and some data may be reviewed by human reviewers. Keep Activity and temporary-chat controls can limit improvement use and routine history, but Google says some retention remains for responses, safety and feedback.
“Can the creator of a Canvas app see my data?”
Yes. Google explicitly says the creator can see data you share and can save it where they choose. Anyone with the app’s public link can view and edit data saved with it.
“Does deleting a Canvas conversation delete every copy?”
No. Deleting the saved AI Mode thread removes it from your account history, but it does not erase data already shared with a user-generated app, copied by another person or stored under a separate Workspace or Drive permission.
“When did AI Mode Canvas become broadly available?”
Google announced on March 4, 2026 that Canvas in AI Mode launched for everyone in the United States in English. Availability, account eligibility and language support can change, so an account may show different controls from another region or edition.
