Check the documented U.S. English rollout, use a personal Google Account, sign in outside Incognito, and test google.com/ai before treating the absence as a bug.
What Google AI Mode Canvas is—and where the control should appear
Canvas is a workspace inside Google Search AI Mode for building and revising a result over several turns. Google describes uses such as project plans, trip itineraries, party plans, fitness schedules, websites, cover letters, study guides and quizzes. A Canvas thread can be edited, shared, compared with alternatives, continued with follow-up questions and restored from its automatic saves.

It is not a separate app or a button that must appear on the ordinary Google homepage. The supported path is:
- Open
google.com/ai, or open Google Search and choose AI Mode. - In the Ask anything bar, open the plus or tool menu.
- Choose Canvas.
- Enter a planning, writing, coding, quiz or study-guide prompt.
The resulting Canvas thread opens on the right side of the AI Mode view. If you are looking for a permanent Canvas icon outside AI Mode, you are checking the wrong surface.

First check whether Canvas is available to you
Region and language
Google’s current Canvas Help information lists Canvas in English for users in the United States on desktop and mobile. That is a narrower promise than the availability of AI Mode generally. Seeing AI Mode in another country, or seeing AI Mode in a language other than English, does not establish that Canvas is enabled there.
Google reported on October 7, 2025 that general AI Mode had expanded to more than 200 countries and territories. That figure applies to AI Mode as a whole, not to every tool inside it. Canvas can therefore be absent while the main AI Mode experience works normally.
If you are outside the United States, set expectations accordingly: there is no documented user switch that forces Canvas on. A missing Canvas control may simply reflect the country, language or rollout assigned to your account.
Account type
For the Search Labs AI Mode experiment, Google requires a personal Google Account. Workspace and Workspace for Education accounts cannot use Search Labs experiments. A work or school account can therefore show a different AI Mode interface, or no Labs controls, even on the same computer and network.
To isolate the account variable, open a normal browser window, sign out of the work or school account, and sign in with a personal Google Account. Do not assume that changing browsers will overcome an account restriction.
Age and Search Labs status
Google’s Labs page lists an 18-or-older requirement for the Labs AI Mode experiment and requires that the experiment be enabled in Search Labs. These requirements concern the Labs version. Google’s standard AI Mode Help pages describe a broader product surface, so Labs-only controls should not be confused with the general AI Mode experience.

If you are eligible for Labs but have never enabled the experiment, open Search Labs while signed in to the personal account, locate the AI Mode experiment and enable it if Google presents that option. If the experiment is not listed, that absence is itself an eligibility or rollout signal rather than a missing browser button.

1. Start from a signed-in, non-Incognito window
Google’s setup instructions require you to be signed in and to keep Incognito mode turned off. Incognito sessions can omit account-specific experiments and rollout flags, so they are a poor test for Canvas.
- Close the Incognito window.
- Open a regular window in your current browser.
- Sign in to the personal Google Account that should have access.
- Go directly to
google.com/ai.
After AI Mode loads, inspect the tool menu in the prompt bar rather than the browser toolbar or the standard Google homepage.
2. Open the plus/tool menu in the right place
Canvas is nested under AI Mode’s plus menu. The label can appear as a plus symbol or a tools control depending on the surface and interface version. Select the control beside the prompt field and look for Canvas among the available tools.
If you are in an ordinary Search results page, a standalone new-tab page or a non-AI chat view, the Canvas item may not be present because that is not the supported entry point. Return to google.com/ai and start a fresh AI Mode prompt.

3. Test another supported surface
Google lists Google Search, google.com/ai and the Google app as AI Mode entry points. Test one additional surface to determine whether the problem follows the account or stays with the browser.

Keep the account, language and location constant while testing. Changing several variables at once makes the result hard to interpret.
Why AI Mode can appear while Canvas does not
AI Mode and Canvas do not have identical rollout boundaries. General AI Mode has been expanded to substantially more countries and languages, while Canvas Help currently specifies English and the United States on desktop and mobile. Tools inside AI Mode can also be exposed gradually by account, device and interface.
Consequently, the combination below is possible and does not prove that your browser is broken:
- AI Mode opens and answers prompts.
- The plus menu is visible.
- Canvas is not one of the listed tools.
In that situation, first verify the U.S. English and personal-account conditions. If those match and Canvas is still absent on every supported surface, the remaining explanations are account-level rollout, experiment exposure or a temporary user-interface change.
Browser-specific issues, including Chrome
Google’s April 16, 2026 Chrome announcement describes an AI Mode experience that can open pages beside Search, search across recent tabs and expose tools such as Canvas from the plus menu. Google said those updates were available in the United States at publication and would expand to more places.
This means Chrome can matter in two different ways:

- Chrome may offer the dedicated AI Mode surface, including its plus-menu tools, only where that Chrome experience has rolled out.
- Even when ordinary AI Mode works in a browser, the Chrome-specific interface may not yet be enabled for your geography or account.
Use the direct web path first. If Chrome alone is missing Canvas, test the same personal account at google.com/ai in another current browser and in the Google app. If Canvas appears elsewhere, the issue is likely tied to Chrome’s AI Mode surface or a browser session rather than basic account eligibility.

Diagnose the result with a simple decision tree
Canvas appears at google.com/ai
Your account has access on that web surface. The original problem was likely the entry point: Canvas is inside the AI Mode plus/tool menu, not a universal homepage button. Bookmarking the direct AI Mode URL can avoid returning to the wrong page.
AI Mode itself is missing
Check the country and language supported for general AI Mode, sign-in state, account type and whether you are using Incognito. If the account is managed by an organization, test with a personal account because Workspace restrictions apply to Search Labs experiments.
AI Mode works, but Canvas is missing everywhere
Confirm that you are testing English in the United States on a desktop or mobile surface listed by Google’s Canvas Help. If you are using Labs, confirm the personal-account and 18-plus requirements and that the experiment is enabled. When all of those conditions match, the most defensible explanation is a staged account rollout, an experiment-exposure difference or a temporary service/UI change.
Canvas appears on one device but not another
Compare the exact account, language, location and app or browser surface. A feature visible in the Google app does not guarantee that the Chrome AI Mode interface has the same rollout, and the reverse can also occur. Keep both applications current and repeat the direct google.com/ai test before changing account settings.
What will not fix a missing Canvas button
- Buying hardware: Canvas is a software eligibility and interface feature. No computer accessory, phone upgrade or physical diagnostic tool is required to restore it.
- Opening the ordinary homepage repeatedly: Canvas is selected from AI Mode’s plus/tool menu, not from a guaranteed homepage shortcut.
- Using a Workspace account for Labs: Google excludes Workspace and Workspace for Education accounts from Search Labs experiments.
- Staying in Incognito: Google’s setup guidance says to use a signed-in, non-Incognito session.
- Assuming worldwide AI Mode availability includes Canvas: The broad AI Mode rollout and the narrower Canvas rollout are different claims.
When to report the problem
Use Google’s feedback option from AI Mode when the documented conditions match but Canvas remains absent. Include the country, language, device type, browser or app, account type, whether Incognito was disabled, and the exact path you tested. State whether AI Mode itself appeared and whether the plus menu was present. This information distinguishes a missing tool from a completely unavailable AI Mode surface.

Google’s public documentation does not provide a manual enablement switch or an account diagnostic that forces Canvas on. Feedback is therefore the appropriate next step after the eligibility and surface checks, not a substitute for them.

- If Canvas is still absent on every supported surface, submit AI Mode feedback because the remaining cause is likely rollout, experiment exposure or a temporary UI/service change.

Does Google Canvas work outside the United States?
