Goodman’s planned Japanese data-centre project is facing criticism, according to a Reuters headline syndicated by Devdiscourse. The available report extract does not identify the Japanese site or explain the objections, so those details remain unconfirmed. Separately, Goodman withdrew its proposed Project Mars data centre in Lane Cove, Sydney, on 28 September 2026, citing changes in the regulatory environment and community feedback.

What is known about the Japanese project?

A Reuters headline syndicated by Devdiscourse reported mounting criticism of what would be Goodman’s largest data-centre project in Japan, days after the company abandoned a similar development in Sydney following local resistance. The accessible extract does not name the Japanese project’s location, describe its proposal, identify its critics or specify what they object to. Those details cannot be established from the available reporting, and Sydney’s objections should not be assumed to apply in Japan.

What happened to Goodman’s Sydney proposal?

Project Mars was withdrawn

Goodman said on 28 September 2026 that it would no longer proceed with Project Mars, a proposed data centre at 12 Mars Road in Lane Cove West. ABC reported its estimated cost at A$1.2 billion; In the Cove reported planned capacity of 90 MW and 24-hour operation. The proposed three-storey facility was about 20 metres from the nearest house and 160 metres from Lane Cove West Public School.

Goodman cited policy changes and community feedback

Goodman told ABC that “the policy and regulatory environment for large-scale data centre development has evolved significantly.” It also said it had considered those changes alongside feedback from the planning process, including community views. In a withdrawal letter reproduced by In the Cove, Goodman said it had considered emerging federal and state policy and would not progress the development application. The letter did not identify which particular policy changes prompted the decision or say what would happen to the Mars Road site.

What residents and agencies raised

In the Cove reported 374 public submissions on the proposal, with nine supporting it. Local and agency concerns included noise, water use, diesel generators, bushland, the Lane Cove River, cumulative development and proximity to homes, a school and recreation. Sydney Water asked NSW Planning to defer its assessment until a servicing study was completed. These were objections and planning positions, not findings that the proposed centre had caused harm.

Did Goodman stop all of its Sydney data-centre work?

No. Goodman said in March 2026 that construction had commenced on SYD01 in Artarmon, a separate project. The company described the site as having 90 MW of secured power for 61 MW of digital infrastructure, with its first 12.2 MW phase targeted to enter service in Q2 2028. That date was a company projection, not a completed delivery.

How much does the Sydney withdrawal tell us about Japan?

It establishes that Goodman withdrew Project Mars after citing an evolved policy and regulatory environment and feedback that included community views. It does not establish that Sydney objections caused criticism in Japan, that the Japanese project faces the same planning issues, or that the company will make the same decision there. The Japanese site, project specifications, critics and substance of their concerns are not identified in the accessible Reuters-syndicated extract.
