The Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards use fundamentally different decision models. Golden Joystick is primarily a public, fan-powered award: a judging panel of Future editors and trusted journalists turns public nominations into a shortlist, then fans decide most public-category winners. The Game Awards is primarily a critics-and-media award: more than 100 international media and influencer outlets choose nominees, and their jury votes count for 90% of each winner’s result while the public contributes 10%.
That difference explains why a game can appear on one show’s ballot but not the other, why the two events use different eligibility dates, and why “fan voted” does not mean exactly the same thing at both ceremonies.

The essential difference in one table
| Decision point | Golden Joystick Awards (2026) | The Game Awards (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Who creates the nominee shortlist? | Future editors and a trusted network of journalists on the Golden Joystick judging panel, after public nominations are submitted. | An international jury of more than 100 global media and influencer outlets. |
| Who chooses most winners? | Fans voting in public categories. Separate critically selected awards use a different process. | A blended result: 90% voting-jury ballots and 10% public fan voting. |
| How are nominee ballots cast? | The public votes in the published categories after the panel produces the shortlist. | Each voting outlet submits a confidential, unranked ballot with five choices per category. |
| How many games normally become nominees? | The final number depends on the category and the published shortlist. | The five games appearing on the most outlet ballots become nominees; ties can produce six or more nominees. |
| Core 2026 eligibility window or cutoff | Generally, releases from 1 November 2025 through 25 September 2026 for core voting, with different rules for ongoing games, Most Wanted, Ultimate Game of the Year and critically selected awards. | Commercial availability by 20 November 2026 at 9 p.m. PT for most categories; Players’ Voice uses a 30 November shipping cutoff. |
| 2026 public voting dates | Main public vote closes 23 October; Ultimate Game of the Year voting runs 26–30 October. | Public voting contributes 10% to the blended winner calculation; the supplied 2026 FAQ does not give a separate general-voting opening and closing schedule. |
| Ceremony date | 11 November 2026. | 10 December 2026. |
The table captures the practical distinction: Golden Joystick lets the public choose from a journalist-curated shortlist, while The Game Awards lets a large professional jury control both the nominations and most of the winner calculation.

Are the Golden Joystick Awards fan voted?
Yes, for the Golden Joystick’s public categories, but not from the first step. The awards describe themselves as “the world’s largest public-voted gaming accolades,” and the event page says millions of fans vote for games, developers, publishers and personalities. The event is also often called the “people’s awards.” Those descriptions refer to the winner vote in public categories, not to an unrestricted process in which fans automatically determine every nominee.

How the Golden Joystick shortlist is made
- Public nominations open. Players submit suggestions during the nomination period. For 2026, nominations opened on 6 August and closed on 28 August.
- The judging panel reviews the nominations. The official rules say the final shortlist is chosen by a panel comprising Future editors and a trusted network of journalists.
- The public votes on that shortlist. The shortlist and public vote began on 25 September 2026. The main public vote closes on 23 October.
- A separate final vote is held for Ultimate Game of the Year. That vote runs from 26 to 30 October, ahead of the 11 November ceremony.
Therefore, the accurate answer to “Are the Golden Joystick Awards fan voted?” is: fans decide most public-category winners, but a professional judging panel decides which games reach those ballots.
Golden Joystick categories that are not simply public votes
The rules distinguish public categories from critically selected awards. A game can therefore be recognized by a critics’ category even when that category does not use the same fan ballot as the main public awards. Ultimate Game of the Year also has its own late-October voting window rather than simply sharing the main public-vote schedule.
Who chooses The Game Awards nominees?
For most categories, nominees are chosen by an international jury of more than 100 global media and influencer outlets. The Game Awards FAQ describes the ballot as confidential and unranked: each participating outlet lists its top five choices in a category, without assigning first through fifth place.
How outlet ballots become nominees
- Each outlet submits five choices per category. The ballot is unranked, so every listed choice is treated as a selection rather than a points-based first-place ranking.
- The ballots are tabulated. The process counts how often each game appears on the submitted ballots.
- The five most frequently appearing games become nominees. If there is a tie around the cutoff, the category can contain six or more nominees.
This is different from a public nomination form. Individual players do not directly add a game to The Game Awards’ nominee list through a mass nomination campaign. The participating outlets’ ballots determine the list for most categories.
Who does not vote?
The Game Awards FAQ says Geoff Keighley is not a jury member and does not vote on nominees or winners. It also says the advisory board has no role in the awards process. Those statements separate the event’s presenter and advisory structure from the formal nomination and winner ballots.

How much does the public vote count at each award?
Golden Joystick: fans control public-category winners
Once the Golden Joystick panel has created the shortlist, the public vote is the decisive mechanism for its public categories. The panel’s role is therefore concentrated at the nomination stage, while fan participation is concentrated at the winner stage. Critically selected categories are an explicit exception and should not be treated as fan ballots.
The Game Awards: 90% jury, 10% public
The Game Awards states that winners are determined by a blended vote in which the voting jury supplies 90% and public fan voting supplies 10%. A public lead in the fan poll can therefore affect the result without outweighing the professional jury’s combined ballot.
The 10% figure applies to the winner calculation described in the FAQ. It does not mean that public voting chooses most nominees; the outlet jury controls the nominee selection for most categories before that blended final vote occurs.
Why can a game be nominated for one award but not the other?
A nomination mismatch is normal because the two programs use different gatekeepers, ballots and dates.
Different gatekeepers favor different kinds of consensus
Golden Joystick starts with public nominations, then has its Future-and-journalist panel decide the shortlist. This can elevate games with strong player awareness or a broad fan base, provided the panel considers them appropriate for a category.

The Game Awards starts with outlet ballots from more than 100 media and influencer organizations. A game must appear often enough across those confidential ballots to reach the category’s top five, subject to ties. A title that is widely discussed by players but less frequently selected by those outlets may miss a Game Awards nomination while still reaching a Golden Joystick public shortlist.
Different winner systems can produce different results
Golden Joystick public categories are decided by fans after shortlisting. The Game Awards combines 90% jury voting with 10% public voting. A game that mobilizes a large fan vote may benefit more directly at Golden Joystick than at The Game Awards, while a game with strong professional consensus may have an advantage in both the Game Awards nomination and winner stages.
Different eligibility clocks remove different releases
The events do not evaluate exactly the same release period. A game can fall inside one program’s window and outside the other’s, or qualify for a special category under one set of rules.
Golden Joystick’s 2026 eligibility and calendar
Core release period
For core voting, Golden Joystick’s rules generally cover games released from 1 November 2025 through 25 September 2026. “Generally” matters: the rules set separate treatment for several category types, so the core window should not be applied mechanically to every award.
Special eligibility cases
- Ongoing or online games: These can qualify for Still Playing and Best Game Expansion, allowing recognition of continuing service or substantial new content rather than only a first release.
- Most Wanted: Games scheduled after 11 November can qualify, because this category concerns anticipated future releases rather than games already eligible for the core voting period.
- Ultimate Game of the Year: It has a separate release window from the core public categories.
- Critically selected categories: These use separate release windows as well, so their eligibility cannot be inferred solely from the public-vote dates.
2026 Golden Joystick milestones
- 6 August: nominations open.
- 28 August: nomination deadline.
- 25 September: shortlist and public vote begin.
- 23 October: main public vote closes.
- 26–30 October: Ultimate Game of the Year voting.
- 11 November: ceremony.
The result is a staged process: nominations in August, a published shortlist and main public ballot from September into October, a dedicated Ultimate Game of the Year ballot at the end of October, and the ceremony in November.

The Game Awards’ 2026 eligibility and calendar
Most categories: 20 November cutoff
The Game Awards’ 2026 FAQ sets commercial availability by 20 November 2026 at 9 p.m. PT as the cutoff for most categories. This date is later than Golden Joystick’s 25 September core-voting boundary, so a game released in the intervening period may be eligible for The Game Awards while falling outside Golden Joystick’s core public categories.
Players’ Voice: 30 November shipping cutoff
Players’ Voice uses a different rule: games must have shipped by 30 November 2026. “Shipped” is not interchangeable with the 20 November commercial-availability cutoff, which is why a title can have a different eligibility answer in Players’ Voice than in the main categories.
Special formats and ongoing releases
- Live-service games: A game released in an earlier year can remain eligible when new content or improvements are substantial enough to merit recognition.
- Early-access games: They may qualify when the jury considers the new creative or technical work worthy.
- DLC and expansions: New downloadable content and expansions may be eligible on the same quality-based principle.
- Remakes and remasters: These may qualify when the jury finds the new creative or technical work deserving of consideration.
The FAQ does not treat the calendar cutoff as the only test for these formats. The nature and significance of the new work also matter.
2026 ceremony date
The Game Awards ceremony is scheduled for 10 December 2026. Its later date gives the event a different release-year shape from Golden Joystick’s 11 November ceremony and its earlier 25 September core-voting boundary.
Ballot mechanics: public voting versus outlet voting
Golden Joystick’s public-ballot model
Golden Joystick’s public categories expose the shortlisted games to fan voters. The important design choice is the sequence: public nominations provide input, the panel determines the final shortlist, and fans then vote among the approved options. This preserves a public-facing award while retaining editorial curation over category fit and nominee quality.
Best Value
The Game Awards’ confidential, unranked model
The Game Awards’ participating outlets do not publish a ranked top five for tabulation. Their ballots are confidential and unranked, and a game’s nominee strength comes from appearing on more ballots. The top-five rule is category-specific in practice, with ties expanding the field to six or more rather than arbitrarily excluding a tied game.
That mechanic means a game does not need to be the first choice of every outlet. Repeated inclusion across many ballots is what moves it into the nominee group. Conversely, a small number of highly enthusiastic ballots cannot automatically compensate for low overall appearance frequency.
What these systems mean for players
If you want your vote to have the greatest direct effect
Golden Joystick’s public categories give fan voting the more direct role in selecting winners. Check the published shortlist and cast the ballot before the 23 October 2026 deadline. If your interest is Ultimate Game of the Year, use its separate 26–30 October voting period rather than assuming the main vote covers it.

Your vote contributes 10% to the blended winner result. The nominee list for most categories has already been determined by the international outlet jury, so public voting is a final weighting rather than the primary nomination mechanism.
If your preferred game is absent
Absence from one ceremony does not prove that a game was ineligible or poorly received. Check the relevant release window, whether the title is being considered as live-service content, an expansion, DLC, an early-access release, a remake or a remaster, and which body controlled that ceremony’s shortlist.
What these systems mean for developers and publishers
Golden Joystick considerations
- Public awareness can help a title receive nominations, but the final shortlist still depends on the judging panel.
- Release timing matters because the core period ends on 25 September 2026, before the ceremony.
- Ongoing games and expansions should be evaluated against the specific Still Playing and Best Game Expansion rules.
- A future release may belong in Most Wanted rather than a core game-of-the-year category.
The Game Awards considerations
- Professional visibility across more than 100 voting outlets matters at the nomination stage.
- Because ballots are unranked, consistent inclusion across outlets can be more important than a few first-place endorsements.
- Late releases can remain eligible through 20 November 2026 at 9 p.m. PT for most categories, subject to the applicable rules.
- Live-service updates, early-access progress, DLC, expansions, remakes and remasters need meaningful creative or technical work for the jury to consider them.
A practical eligibility checklist for a 2026 release
- Identify the ceremony and category. Do not apply Golden Joystick’s core window to Ultimate Game of the Year or critically selected awards, and do not apply The Game Awards’ main cutoff to Players’ Voice.
- Record the relevant date. For Golden Joystick core voting, check whether release falls between 1 November 2025 and 25 September 2026. For The Game Awards, check commercial availability by 20 November 2026 at 9 p.m. PT, or shipping by 30 November for Players’ Voice.
- Classify the content. Decide whether the submission is a new game, ongoing game, expansion, DLC, early-access title, remake or remaster.
- Check the decision-maker. Golden Joystick public winners come from fan voting after panel shortlisting; The Game Awards nominees and most of the winner result come from the outlet jury.
- Follow the correct ballot date. Golden Joystick’s main vote closes 23 October, while Ultimate Game of the Year voting runs 26–30 October. The Game Awards uses the 10% public component within its own published voting process.
Bottom line: which awards are more “fan voted”?
Golden Joystick is the more directly fan-driven of the two for its public categories: fans submit nominations, a journalist panel selects the shortlist, and fans decide the winners. The Game Awards is a jury-led system: more than 100 media and influencer outlets choose most nominees, then the final result is weighted 90% toward that jury and 10% toward the public.
Neither description means the other audience is irrelevant. Golden Joystick still uses professional curation, and The Game Awards still gives fans a formal share of the winner vote. The decisive difference is where each audience has the most power: Golden Joystick gives fans the final say in public categories, while The Game Awards gives the professional jury control of nominations and nine-tenths of the winner calculation.
