Anyone who buys and plays games is the intended Golden Joystick voter, including fans outside the United Kingdom. The 2026 rules describe “millions of fans worldwide,” but do not publish a country-by-country eligibility list. A judging panel selects the shortlists; the public then chooses winners in the listed public categories. The published rules also do not state an age requirement, a numeric per-person limit, or an explicit one-vote-per-category rule, so check the live ballot’s terms before submitting.
2026 Golden Joystick voting dates at a glance
The 2026 campaign has separate nomination, main-ballot and Ultimate Game of the Year (UGOTY) stages. Times below are the published schedule; the October deadlines are still ahead of the November ceremony.

|---|---|---|
| Nominations open | August 6, 2026 | Fans can put forward potential nominees. |
| Nomination deadline | August 28, 2026, at 10am PDT / 1pm EDT / 6pm BST | The nomination form closes. |
| Shortlist and main public vote | September 25, 2026 | The judging panel’s shortlist is announced and the public ballot opens. |
| Main public vote closes | October 23, 2026 | Submit votes in the listed public categories before the ballot closes. |
| UGOTY public vote | October 26–30, 2026 | A separate Ultimate Game of the Year ballot runs after the main vote. |
| Ceremony | November 11, 2026 | The awards ceremony takes place at Troxy in London. |
If you are close to a deadline, use the time zone printed on the ballot and allow time for the final registration step. The nomination deadline is shown in three time zones; the published schedule does not provide a separate closing time for the October 23 main vote or the October 26–30 UGOTY ballot.
Who can vote in the Golden Joystick Awards?
The ballot is designed for the gaming public
The official rules call the event “the people’s awards” and explain that this is why it has special significance in the gaming calendar. They describe the audience as millions of fans worldwide. That language supports public participation by ordinary players rather than a ballot restricted to industry professionals, journalists or residents of one country.

Can people outside the UK vote?
Nothing in the published 2026 material gives a UK-only requirement. The worldwide-fans wording indicates that voters outside the United Kingdom are part of the intended audience. However, no published page supplies a complete country list, confirms every territory, or describes a regional exclusion policy. Treat international access as supported but not guaranteed for every jurisdiction: open the live ballot and read its terms if your country’s eligibility matters.
Age and account requirements are not fully stated
The available rules do not publish a minimum age for the ballot. They also do not set out a universal account requirement. GamesRadar says voters can enter an email address and click Register my Votes after finishing. That step may record the ballot or unlock the voter reward, but the published explanation does not establish whether an email is required to cast every vote, whether verification is mandatory, or how an address is used. Those details belong to the live ballot’s privacy and participation terms.
Who chooses nominees and winners?
A panel chooses the shortlist
The public does not nominate directly onto the final ballot. The Golden Joystick rules say the final shortlist is selected by a judging panel made up of Future editors and a trusted network of journalists. GamesRadar identifies contributors from PC Gamer, Future Games Show, Edge, Retro Gamer, GamesRadar and other industry experts. This editorial process determines which games, studios, performers and products appear as choices.

Once the shortlist is published, fans vote in the public categories. The panel’s role and the audience’s role are therefore different: judges narrow the field, while voters decide the result among the listed finalists. UGOTY is handled as a separate public ballot rather than as another category inside the main form.

Is there a one-vote-per-category limit?
No published 2026 source states a numeric per-person limit or explicitly says “one vote per category.” The ballot may enforce a selection rule technically, but that is not the same as a published terms-of-entry limit. Do not assume that you can vote repeatedly, or that one completed form automatically covers every category. Before submitting, read the live ballot’s rules for limits, eligibility checks, correction or change-of-vote provisions, and any email-verification requirement.
The email field and Register my Votes button should not be interpreted as proof of a vote cap. GamesRadar presents that registration as part of completing the voter flow and describes a reward associated with it, but does not use it to publish a numerical limit.
What games are eligible for the 2026 awards?
Main public-vote window
For the core 2026 awards, the official rules normally cover games released from November 1, 2025 through September 25, 2026. The rules allow possible exceptions for games released early in the public-voting window. Because that exception is not defined more precisely in the published summary, the shortlist and the category’s ballot terms control in an individual case.
Category-specific exceptions
- Still Playing (PC and Console, and Mobile): older ongoing or online games can qualify even when they fall outside the normal new-release window.
- Best Game Expansion: an expansion for an older game can qualify under its category-specific treatment.
- Most Wanted Game: this category is for games scheduled to release after November 11, 2026, so it is not a retrospective award for games already available by the ceremony.
UGOTY has its own release window
Ultimate Game of the Year considers games released from November 8, 2025 through October 25, 2026. The rules mention limited exceptions for releases early in that window. A game can therefore fall outside the main ballot’s dates yet still be considered for UGOTY, or meet the UGOTY dates while not appearing in a particular main category.

Critically selected categories use a different period
The published rules give critically selected categories a window of November 20, 2025 through November 11, 2026. This period should not be substituted for the public-vote window when checking a game’s eligibility. The ballot’s category label and terms determine which window applies.
Which categories are in the main public vote?
GamesRadar lists these 2026 public-vote categories:
- Best Storytelling
- Best Multiplayer Game
- Best Visual Design
- Best Indie Game
- Best Indie Game – Self Published
- Still Playing Award – PC and Console
- Still Playing Award – Mobile
- Best Remake / Remaster
- Studio of the Year
- Best Game Expansion
- Best Audio Design
- Best Soundtrack
- Best Lead Performer
- Best Supporting Performer
- PC Game of the Year
- Console Game of the Year
- Best Early Access Game
- Best Gaming Hardware
- Best Game Adaptation
- Best Game Trailer
- Most Wanted Game
Not every item is a conventional released-game award. Studio of the Year, performer awards, hardware, adaptations and trailers each describe a different kind of nominee. Most Wanted is forward-looking, while Still Playing and Best Game Expansion deliberately accommodate established live or ongoing games.

| Point of comparison | Main public ballot | UGOTY ballot |
|---|---|---|
| Voting window | Opens September 25, 2026; closes October 23, 2026. | Runs October 26–30, 2026. |
| Release-eligibility window | Usually November 1, 2025–September 25, 2026, with possible early-window exceptions. | November 8, 2025–October 25, 2026, with limited exceptions. |
| Selection method | Public votes among a shortlist selected by the judging panel. | Separate public ballot announced after the main vote. |
| Ongoing-game treatment | Still Playing and Best Game Expansion have category-specific exceptions for older games. | No equivalent ongoing-game exception is stated in the published summary. |
The separate dates mean that completing the main ballot does not automatically submit a UGOTY vote. Return during the October 26–30 window if you want to participate in that award.
How to cast a 2026 vote
- Wait for the relevant ballot to open. The main shortlist and public vote appear on September 25; UGOTY follows on October 26.
- Check the category’s eligibility context. A newly released game, an ongoing title, an expansion, a trailer and a Most Wanted game are governed by different descriptions and, in some cases, different dates.
- Choose from the published shortlist. The panel, not the individual voter, determines which nominees are available.
- Review every selection before submitting. The published material does not say whether votes can be edited after submission or whether an incomplete form is saved.
- Complete the ballot’s final action. GamesRadar describes entering an email address and clicking Register my Votes. Follow the live page’s instructions, including any confirmation message.
- Keep the receipt or confirmation. If the page displays a confirmation, save it until the deadline passes. It is the practical way to distinguish a submitted ballot from a form that was merely filled in.
Voter reward and privacy considerations
GamesRadar says a voter can receive a free ebook worth up to £12.99 / $18.99 after entering an email address and clicking Register my Votes. That value describes the ebook offer reported for 2026; it is not an entry fee, a cash payment or evidence of a voting advantage. Availability, title, delivery and eligibility should be checked on the registration page. Read the page’s privacy notice before providing an address, particularly if you do not want award updates or other communications.
What the 2025 turnout tells you
GamesRadar/Future reported more than 21 million votes across the 2025 categories. That figure demonstrates the scale of public participation, but it does not establish how many votes one person may cast, whether every country participated, or how the 2026 ballot will count submissions. Use it as a historical turnout figure, not as a rule for the current ballot.
Deadline and eligibility problems to check
The page is closed when you try to vote
Confirm that you are using the correct ballot. The main vote ends October 23, while UGOTY does not open until October 26. A closed main form is not evidence that the entire awards process has ended.

Compare its release date with the applicable window and category. Older titles may appear only under Still Playing or Best Game Expansion; an unreleased title may belong under Most Wanted. If the dates fit but the nominee is absent, the judging panel’s shortlist decision is the relevant explanation.

You are outside the UK
The worldwide wording supports international participation, but the published material does not guarantee access in every territory. Check the ballot’s country and terms fields rather than relying on assumptions about residence.
You are unsure whether the vote registered
Complete the final registration action, look for an on-screen confirmation and retain any confirmation email. The available rules do not promise that a browser refresh, a partially completed form or a repeated submission will be counted.
What is still not specified publicly?
For 2026, the following points remain unresolved in the published information: a country-by-country eligibility list; a minimum voter age; a numeric vote limit; an explicit one-vote-per-category rule; whether email verification is compulsory for the vote itself; and whether submitted selections can be changed. The live ballot’s terms are the authoritative place to settle those questions, and they may add conditions not present in the general rules summary.
