As of October 20, 2026, GitHub Status reports Git Operations, API Requests, and Actions operational. The latest listed degradation, affecting Actions, Pages, and Webhooks on October 19, is marked resolved. Because status can change quickly, check the official GitHub Status page immediately when a failure starts. If the page is green, continue with repository permissions, credentials, DNS, firewall, proxy, rate-limit, and runner checks; a healthy platform does not prove that your specific account, repository, or network path is healthy.
Check whether the failure matches a GitHub incident
Open GitHub Status before changing code or repeatedly retrying a command. Match the affected operation to the component named in the incident timeline rather than asking only whether “GitHub is down.” The useful distinction is whether you are reading data, writing data, calling an API, or starting a workflow.

| What fails | Status component to compare | What a mismatch suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Clone, fetch, or other reads | Git Operations | A repository, credential, DNS, proxy, or firewall problem may be local even when Git Operations is operational. |
| Push, pull-request update, issue edit, or other writes | Git Operations plus the relevant web/API component | Reads may work while writes are impaired during a partial outage; otherwise check authentication, permissions, and branch rules. |
| REST or GraphQL request | API Requests | Use the HTTP status, response body, and headers to separate authentication, rate limits, client errors, and service errors. |
| Queued, missing, or failing workflow | Actions | Inspect the run, trigger, runner, network, and dependencies; a repository page can remain usable while runners are unhealthy. |
| Webhook delivery or site publishing | Webhooks or Pages | A component-specific incident can affect integrations without taking Git operations offline. |
GitHub’s Actions guidance explicitly directs users to GitHub Status for real-time platform health. A green status page is evidence about GitHub’s reported services, not a test of your organization’s network, account, repository, or self-hosted runner.
Use a five-minute triage sequence
- Record the exact symptom and time. Save the command, repository, branch, HTTP status, response text, and run URL or identifier. “Clone fails” and “push is rejected” require different checks.
- Check GitHub Status. Read the incident history and affected components. If your operation is listed, avoid destructive recovery steps and monitor the incident for updates.
- Test scope. Try another known-public repository for a read operation, or another repository where you have write access. A failure limited to one repository points toward configuration or permission issues.
- Test the path. Check DNS resolution for the GitHub host, then examine proxy, VPN, firewall, organization network policy, and security software. Test from an approved alternate network only if your security policy permits it.
- Verify identity and authorization. Confirm the remote URL, account, token or SSH key, repository membership, organization policy, and branch protection rules.
- Retry safely. After a reported incident is resolved, retry the original operation. Do not force-push or recreate repositories merely because a transient service failed.
When cloning or fetching fails
Confirm the repository and remote URL
Run git remote -v in an existing checkout and compare the displayed fetch URL with the repository’s current URL. For a new checkout, copy the URL again from the repository’s Code menu instead of relying on a stale script. A renamed, transferred, private, or deleted repository can produce an error that looks like an outage.

Use git ls-remote <repository-url> to test whether Git can reach the remote and list references without downloading a working tree. An authentication error here is different from a timeout or name-resolution error. Preserve the complete output for your administrator; do not paste tokens or private key material.
Separate DNS and network failures from GitHub failures
- A message such as “Could not resolve host” indicates DNS or local network resolution. Check the configured resolver and whether a corporate DNS policy blocks the destination.
- A timeout, connection reset, or TLS error points to a proxy, VPN, firewall, inspection device, or unstable route. GitHub’s Actions networking guidance lists DNS, firewalls, organization network settings, and third-party services as common external causes.
- If the browser opens GitHub but Git does not, the two paths may use different proxy settings, certificates, authentication, or transports. Browser success does not validate the Git client path.
Capture verbose diagnostics only when your security policy allows it. For HTTPS, a Git transport trace can reveal proxy negotiation and the HTTP response; redact authorization headers before sharing logs. For SSH, test the handshake with your approved key and inspect whether the client is selecting the expected identity.
Check access and credentials
For a private repository, verify that the signed-in account or token still has access and that the organization has not required an approval, SSO authorization, or a new authentication policy. Password authentication for Git over HTTPS is not a fallback for a rejected token; use the organization-approved token or credential manager. With SSH, confirm that the public key is attached to the intended account and that your SSH agent has loaded the matching private key.

Try the other supported transport as an isolation test
If policy permits, test HTTPS and SSH separately. GitHub’s March 2026 availability report recorded approximately 6% errors for Git over HTTP while SSH was not impacted. That kind of transport-specific event can explain why one URL works and the other fails. Switching transport cannot repair a GitHub-side outage affecting the underlying write or read service, so keep the status timeline in view.
When pushing is rejected or times out
Determine whether the failure is a write outage
A successful clone followed by a failed push does not prove that your branch is wrong. During GitHub’s October 7, 2026 incident, write operations failed across Git operations and several connected services while reading data was largely unaffected. GitHub reported that operations retried successfully after recovery and that no databases experienced data loss.
If GitHub lists a Git Operations or related write incident, keep your local commit. Check the incident updates, then retry the same push after recovery. Avoid creating duplicate branches, rebasing published work, or force-pushing as a reaction to a transient error.

Validate the remote, account, and permission
- Run
git remote -vand ensure the push URL targets the intended repository, not an old fork or a read-only mirror. - Run
git statusandgit log -1to confirm the commit you intend to publish is present locally. - Check that the credential used for pushing belongs to an account with write permission and that the token has the required repository scope.
- Read the server’s rejection text. A protected-branch message requires a pull request or an approved status check, not another retry. A non-fast-forward rejection means the remote branch advanced; fetch and reconcile according to your team’s workflow.
Interpret common push errors
| Error pattern | Likely category | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication failed, permission denied, or repository not found | Credential, account, URL, or authorization | Recheck the account, token/SSH key, repository visibility, and organization policy. |
| Protected branch or required status check | Repository policy | Push to a permitted branch and open the required pull request. |
| Non-fast-forward | Remote history changed | Fetch, review the incoming commits, then merge or rebase as your project requires. |
| Timeout, 5xx response, or connection reset | Service or network path | Compare with GitHub Status, test the path, and retry after recovery. |
When the GitHub API fails
Capture the response before changing the client
Record the HTTP method, endpoint category, status code, response body, request identifier, and relevant headers. A 401 or 403 generally requires an authentication, permission, or policy check; a 404 can mean the resource is private or the token cannot see it; a 429 or a 403 accompanied by rate-limit headers requires rate-limit handling; and a 5xx or gateway timeout may indicate a GitHub service problem or an intermediary failure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not treat every 403 as the same. Check the primary rate-limit headers, including the remaining request count and reset time, when they are returned. Secondary limits can temporarily restrict bursts or concurrent requests even when the primary counter is not exhausted. Honor the server’s retry guidance, reduce concurrency, add exponential backoff, and avoid polling loops.
Verify token identity and scopes
Confirm that the client is sending the intended token, that the token is not expired or revoked, and that its permissions cover the endpoint and repository. Organization approval, SSO authorization, fine-grained repository selection, and enterprise policy can all make a token valid but insufficient. Test with a minimal, read-only request that the account should be able to perform, then compare the result with the failing operation.

Distinguish service errors from application bugs
If multiple independent endpoints return 5xx responses at the same time, compare the timing with API Requests on GitHub Status before rewriting request code. If only one endpoint or one account fails while other calls succeed, inspect URL construction, pagination, payload validation, permissions, and token selection. GitHub’s official REST API troubleshooting guidance recommends using the response and headers to make this distinction.

Open the run summary and logs
Start at the repository’s Actions tab, open the affected workflow run, and inspect the run summary, job status, annotations, and step logs. A job that never starts has a different cause from a job that starts and fails during checkout or deployment. Save the run identifier and the first failing step.
Check whether the workflow was triggered
Review the event, branch, path filters, and workflow file on the commit that should have started the run. Commit-message annotations can intentionally skip workflows; when that happens, no runner failure exists to repair. Also check whether required approvals, environments, concurrency groups, or repository rules are holding the run.
Best Value
Inspect runner availability and labels
- For GitHub-hosted runners, compare the queue time with the Actions component status and incident timeline.
- For self-hosted runners, verify that the runner service is online, connected, assigned to the repository or organization, and labeled to match the job’s
runs-onrequirement. - Check whether another job has consumed a concurrency slot or whether an organization-level policy has disabled the runner.
Test runner networking and dependencies
Runner jobs must resolve DNS, reach GitHub endpoints, download actions and packages, and contact deployment or test services. Firewalls, proxies, expired certificates, private network routes, and third-party outages can leave the workflow queued or fail it after startup. GitHub’s networking guidance recommends checking runner configuration and network access and contacting support when those checks do not identify the cause.
What recent incidents reveal about partial outages
October 7, 2026: writes failed while reads mostly worked
GitHub reported two write-operation outages affecting Git operations, pull requests, issues, Actions, API, webhooks, authentication, Apps, code scanning, Codespaces, and Copilot. Reading data was largely unaffected. In the first window, 5.6% of web and API requests failed, with a peak of 8.9%; up to 26% of Git authentication requests and 17% of Actions runs failed. GitHub reported no database data loss, and operations retried after recovery succeeded. The practical lesson is to test the exact operation rather than infer health from a page that loads.
March 2026: transport-specific Git errors
GitHub’s March availability report recorded approximately 6% errors for Git over HTTP while SSH was not impacted. This is why comparing HTTPS and SSH can isolate a transport path when policy allows it, while still leaving open the possibility of a broader write outage.

The July availability report described a multi-service event involving the Web UI, REST API, GraphQL API, Actions, Packages, Copilot, and Git operations. It also documented a runner-connectivity problem caused by an expired internal SSL certificate. A workflow queue problem can therefore coexist with apparently normal repository browsing.
Choose the right recovery or escalation
| Finding | Best response |
|---|---|
| Matching component is in an active incident | Preserve local work, follow the incident updates, and retry only after recovery is reported. |
| Only one repository or account fails | Inspect URL, visibility, membership, token scope, SSO/organization policy, and branch protection. |
| DNS, timeout, proxy, or firewall symptoms | Work with the network administrator; compare an approved alternate path and verify certificates and allow-lists. |
| API rate limit or secondary limit | Back off, reduce concurrency, cache responses, and resume after the reset or server guidance. |
| Self-hosted runner offline | Restore the runner service, connectivity, labels, and certificate trust before rerunning the job. |
| No cause after logs and status checks | Escalate to the repository or organization administrator, then GitHub Support if your plan permits it, including timestamps, request/run identifiers, sanitized logs, and the affected scope. |
When reporting a problem, state whether reads, writes, API calls, and Actions are affected; identify the transport; provide the exact error class; and say whether other repositories or networks work. That information lets an administrator distinguish a platform incident from a local configuration fault without asking you to repeat unsafe operations.
