GitHub’s advice is to use Copilot’s computer-use feature only when a task genuinely needs a visual interface. If an API, MCP server, terminal command, filesystem tool or dedicated browser tool can do the job, GitHub says that route typically offers more structured information and predictable results. Computer use is a public-preview option for interacting with local desktop apps—not the default choice for every Copilot task.
What Copilot computer use does
GitHub Copilot computer use lets Copilot work through the visible interface of applications on a local computer. It can inspect accessible application content and visual context, click controls, enter or edit text, press keys, scroll, drag items and move through workflows across applications.
GitHub documents the capability for GitHub Copilot CLI and the GitHub Copilot app, for local sessions on macOS and Windows. Examples include summarizing information in legacy desktop software, updating a presentation, entering information in GUI-only software and transferring information between applications. GitHub describes the feature as public preview, so its availability and controls may change.
The Copilot app is available on all Copilot plans, according to GitHub’s documentation. For CLI users who receive Copilot through an organization, the organization must enable the CLI policy.

Why GitHub says to try another tool first
A graphical interface can give Copilot a way into software that lacks a useful direct integration. But when a task has a direct route, GitHub recommends using it instead: the agent can work with structured information or an explicit action rather than interpreting a changing screen and its controls. That preference is about choosing the more suitable interface for the task; it is not a guarantee that any particular integration will always be error-free.

In short, the question is not whether Copilot can click through an app; it is whether clicking through that app is necessary. Prefer a direct route when one handles the job, and reserve computer use for work that depends on the graphical interface.

How to enable it and grant access
Computer use is disabled by default. Enable it in the Copilot app settings, or start it in an interactive CLI session with /computer on. In the CLI, /computer show reports the feature, plugin and MCP status.
On macOS, GitHub’s setup documentation calls for Accessibility permission so Copilot can interact with application controls. Screen Recording permission is needed when it must inspect windows for visual context. These permissions make the requested interaction possible; consider which application and action you are authorizing before approving.

Computer use follows the permission mode configured for the Copilot surface. When an approval prompt appears, you can allow the action for the current session, save an “Always allow” approval for future sessions, or decline or cancel it. An application approval saved in the app or CLI applies to both surfaces on the same computer. GitHub says deny rules take precedence over automatic or saved approvals.
To interrupt an active operation, use Stop or Escape in the app; in the CLI, press Escape twice, as described in GitHub’s instructions.

Prompts and workflows that are easier to review
Give Copilot a concrete outcome, name the application or applications involved, and state boundaries that matter. For a read-only request, make clear that it must not change values or submit forms. GitHub’s example guidance includes that kind of constraint for a summary task.
- Specify whether the task is read-only or may make changes.
- Name the relevant app and the information or destination to use.
- Call out actions it must not take, such as editing values or submitting a form.
- Review the visible application and requested action before approving access.
Clear instructions and review help keep the intended task in view; they do not make computer interaction risk-free.

Reliability and privacy considerations
The New Stack’s Oct. 2, 2026 report relayed GitHub warnings that timing changes or a changed window state can cause repeated actions or stalls. Copilot may choose the wrong control, type into the wrong field, or have difficulty with dynamic interfaces and complex workflows. Those are reasons to be especially careful with consequential actions and interfaces that change while the task is running.
The same report warned that unexpected on-screen content or ambiguous instructions could lead to actions affecting the device, data or connected accounts. Sensitive information visible in an application window may also become context for the agent. Limit exposure where practical and review what is on screen before granting access. An approval choice governs permission; it should not be treated as a guarantee that every action or interpretation will be correct.
What organizations can control
Enterprise administrators can disable computer use through the managed setting features.computerUse. GitHub says users cannot override that restriction with local settings.
The New Stack reported that planned Business and Enterprise default-enablement behavior starting Oct. 22, 2026 excludes preview features, which would leave computer use opt-in under that policy context. Because this is secondary reporting about a future policy date and the feature is in preview, organizations should check GitHub’s current policy and documentation rather than assume that rollout detail remains in force.
