Gitea Code Review Tool in Go: Build Around Reviews and Webhooks

Integrate Go with Gitea pull requests using the review API and signed webhooks, while keeping comments aligned with the current commit and diff.

A Go application can join Gitea’s pull-request workflow through three interfaces: the pull-request review API to publish feedback, webhooks to react to repository activity, and an HTTP client or the Gitea Go SDK to make authenticated API calls. The core design challenge is keeping each comment tied to the correct commit and diff position, then validating incoming webhook signatures before acting on them.

Choose the integration shape

A review tool can be event-driven, polling-based, or a combination. Webhooks let the application respond when configured events arrive; polling can be useful when inbound delivery is not practical, but requires repeated checks. This is a design trade-off, not a measured latency or reliability comparison. If using webhooks, treat them as the trigger to fetch current pull-request data rather than assuming an event payload is the complete or current review context.

The implementation has three responsibilities: authenticate to the Gitea API, create or submit reviews, and safely receive events. Keep those concerns separate so API behavior, webhook verification, and review-generation logic can be tested independently.

Check Gitea and Go compatibility first

Gitea’s API documentation is versioned: the current API documentation is labeled 28.0.0, while a separate reference is available for 1.26. The schemas and behavior shown in one version should not be assumed to match every installation. Inspect the API documentation for the instance you will use and test the exact review and webhook operations against it. See Gitea API documentation and the Gitea 1.26 API reference.

Authentication details can also vary by release. Gitea’s API documentation notes that the AccessToken method is deprecated for removal in Gitea 1.23. Follow the authentication guidance for the target instance rather than copying an older token example; Gitea’s API Usage documentation describes its authentication flow and identifies the Go SDK as a reference.

Choose an API client

Approach Best fit Trade-offs to check
Go net/http Direct control over requests, transport, headers, and dependencies. You own request construction, response handling, and compatibility checks for each operation.
Gitea Go SDK A Gitea-specific client abstraction for API calls. Check that the selected SDK release supports your Go version, target Gitea release, and every operation your tool needs.

The standard library’s net/http package provides both HTTP client and server support. Close response bodies after requests and configure the client for the headers, redirects, timeouts, and transport behavior your service requires. The Gitea Go SDK is published at module path gitea.dev/sdk; its package documentation lists requirements of Go 1.26 or later and Gitea 1.11 or later. These are version-sensitive package metadata, so verify the requirements for the SDK release you select.

There is no universally better choice. Compare direct control versus SDK abstraction, target-version compatibility, coverage of the review operations you need, and the team’s dependency and maintenance preferences. If a needed operation is unavailable through the SDK you select—or you want fewer dependencies—direct HTTP requests remain an option.

Create a review and place comments on the right diff

Gitea documents review creation at POST /repos/{owner}/{repo}/pulls/{index}/reviews. The request can include a review body, commit ID, event, and a list of comments. Each line comment carries a body, file path, and old or new position. The API describes positions as integers and documents zero for a comment on a new-file line or line zero. Consult the create-review API reference for the schema supported by your instance.

For correctness, treat the commit ID and diff coordinates as a linked set. Before posting, fetch the pull request’s current data and diff, then confirm that the commit and positions used by generated comments still refer to the patch being reviewed. This verification is an implementation safeguard: the request schema specifies the fields, but does not guarantee that coordinates generated from an earlier patch remain valid after the pull request changes.

The documented event values are APPROVED, PENDING, COMMENT, REQUEST_CHANGES, and REQUEST_REVIEW. Select the event that matches the tool’s intent and the permissions and workflow of the repository. A pending review can be submitted later through POST /repos/{owner}/{repo}/pulls/{index}/reviews/{id}; see the pending-review submission API.

Read existing review comments when needed

To display existing feedback or reconcile a tool’s comments with Gitea’s stored review, use the review-comment retrieval operation supported by the target instance. Its documented records include fields such as body, commit IDs, diff hunk, path, original and current position, and review ID. Those fields help distinguish feedback attached to earlier patch coordinates from comments associated with the current diff. Check the review comments API reference for the operation’s exact response shape.

Receive webhooks without trusting unverified payloads

Gitea supports repository, organization, user, and system webhook scopes. Pull-request and review-related events are available; selecting the review umbrella event fans out to more specific approval, rejection, and review-comment events. Deliveries are asynchronous, and headers include a unique delivery UUID and event names. Where normalized events group multiple actions, X-Gitea-Event-Type distinguishes the specific trigger. See Gitea’s webhook documentation for configuration and event details.

  1. Preserve the raw body. Read the request bytes before decoding JSON; the signature is computed over the payload, so parsing and re-encoding can change what is verified.
  2. Calculate HMAC-SHA256. Use the configured webhook secret and the raw request body.
  3. Verify the signature. Compare the computed lowercase hexadecimal digest with X-Gitea-Signature. Gitea also documents the compatible X-Hub-Signature-256 format, which uses the sha256= prefix. Use a constant-time comparison where possible.
  4. Only then parse and dispatch. A valid JSON payload or the presence of a compatibility header alone does not establish that the request is authentic.
  5. Record the delivery UUID. Use it as an idempotency key so repeated processing of the same delivery can be handled safely.

Recording delivery IDs is an engineering safeguard based on Gitea’s documented unique delivery identifier; it does not mean Gitea guarantees retries or exactly-once delivery. Design event handlers so duplicate work cannot create unintended duplicate reviews.

Build a review workflow that can recover from change

A practical flow is to accept a verified event, identify the repository and pull request, fetch the latest pull-request and diff state, generate feedback against that state, and submit a review using its commit and positions. If the pull request changes between fetching the diff and submitting the review, handle the API response as a stale-context failure: fetch the latest state, regenerate or discard the affected comments, and try again only if the feedback still applies.

Keep review generation separate from submission. That makes it possible to validate paths and positions before sending, log the commit associated with a review, and choose whether a result is a comment, approval, request for changes, or pending review. Avoid treating a successful webhook parse as proof that a review was posted; track API submission outcomes separately.

Test against the instance you will run

  • Confirm the instance’s API version and the review endpoint’s request and response schema.
  • Exercise each review event your tool will use, including pending-review submission if applicable.
  • Test comments on existing-file and new-file lines, including the documented zero-position cases.
  • Verify the webhook signature against the untouched body and reject altered payloads or invalid signatures.
  • Check that the handler distinguishes event types and safely handles a repeated delivery UUID.
  • Test what happens when the pull request changes after the tool reads its diff but before it submits comments.

Gitea’s API and webhook documentation, together with Go’s HTTP package documentation, establish the interfaces and request details. They do not establish one universal authentication configuration or behavior across all deployed versions, so compatibility testing against the actual server remains part of implementation.
