If your AirTag’s location is stale or missing, first check the status shown in Find My, then verify your Apple device’s location, Bluetooth, network, and account settings. An AirTag does not send GPS coordinates directly to you: nearby Apple devices detect it over Bluetooth and report an approximate location through the Find My network. If no nearby device has recently reported it, the map may not show a current position.
What the Find My status means
Open Find My, tap Items, and select the AirTag. The message and map help distinguish a stale report from a settings problem. Apple describes Find My as a crowdsourced network of more than a billion Apple devices that use Bluetooth to detect an accessory and report its approximate location to its owner. - A location is shown: Treat it as the most recent reported position, not proof the AirTag is still there. The network depends on nearby Apple devices detecting the tag.
- “No location found”: Apple says Find My may retain a last known location for up to seven days. If the AirTag has not sent a location through Find My for more than seven days, the app may show this message.
- “Not sharing location • Online”: The device can be online but unable to send its location. Apple gives a Location Services issue as an example.
- “Offline” or no recent movement: This does not by itself prove the AirTag is broken. The AirTag may not have been detected recently, or a phone setting or connection may need attention.
Apple does not specify a guaranteed refresh interval, so a map that has not changed for a particular number of minutes or hours is not enough on its own to identify the cause.
Fix settings and connection problems first
Check the iPhone or iPad associated with your Apple Account. These are the first steps to try before replacing a battery or resetting the AirTag.

- Turn on Bluetooth and Location Services. On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings and confirm both are enabled.
- Allow Find My to use location. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Find My. Confirm location access is allowed; Apple recommends enabling Precise Location for the most accurate location.
- Enable the Find My network. In Find My settings, confirm the network option is on so the device can participate in finding items.
- Resolve account or sync prompts. Complete any Apple Account setup prompts, resume iCloud data sync if asked, and turn on iCloud Keychain.
- Check the internet connection. Connect to a strong Wi-Fi or mobile network, then restart the iPhone or iPad.
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for an AirTag that will not connect covers these settings and connection checks. They can address problems with the reporting device, but cannot make a remote AirTag report a fresh position when no nearby Apple device detects it.
Check the AirTag battery and connection
Look in Find My for a low-battery notice. If one appears, replace the battery; Apple lists this as a possible fix when the AirTag needs battery attention. A replacement will not resolve a missing nearby network report or an iPhone location-setting issue.

If the AirTag still will not connect after checking the phone and battery, Apple lists resetting it as another option. Follow Apple’s current AirTag reset instructions for your model. A reset is not a way to force a location update from a distance.

The right Find My action depends on whether you can get close to the AirTag. A map location and directions help with remote searching; sound and Precision Finding are nearby tools.

If Find Nearby is unavailable, the AirTag may be out of range. Use the map location, directions, or Play Sound when available, then try again as you get closer. See Apple’s instructions for finding an AirTag nearby for device requirements and steps.

If the AirTag does not appear under Items, update the iPhone or iPad to the latest operating system available for it and check Apple’s current support guidance for the AirTag generation and OS combination. Requirements differ by generation; an update is a recommended compatibility check, not a guarantee that it will restore a location report.
