Pandas lets you load tabular data into Python and inspect its rows, columns, types, and missing values before you start analysis. Its main table structure is the DataFrame: a labeled, two-dimensional structure whose columns can hold different types of data.
What kind of data does pandas handle?
Pandas is designed for working with tabular data, including information stored in spreadsheets and databases. It can read and write formats such as CSV, Excel, SQL, JSON, and Parquet; some formats require an additional dependency. See the pandas getting-started tutorials for supported workflows and format-specific guidance.

The two structures to know are Series and DataFrame. A Series is a one-dimensional labeled array. A DataFrame is two-dimensional, with labeled rows and columns that may contain different types. A spreadsheet is a useful mental model, but pandas labels and alignment rules also affect how data is selected and combined. The pandas introduction to data structures explains these concepts in more detail.

For a CSV file, import pandas and call read_csv():
import pandas as pd
df = pd.read_csv("file.csv")
Here, df refers to the DataFrame created from the file. The file path must point to the CSV you want to open; use a path relative to your current working directory or provide an appropriate full path. Pandas offers a family of read_* functions for other sources and formats. For example, reading Excel files may require installing an Excel reader dependency. The official tutorials on reading and writing tabular data cover these options.

How do I see the first 8 rows of a DataFrame?
Use head() to preview the first rows. Pass a number to choose how many:
df.head(8)
To inspect the end of the table instead, use df.tail(). These previews help you check whether the data looks broadly as expected, but a few rows cannot establish that the entire file is correct or complete.
How do I check the columns and their types?
Use the dtypes attribute to see the type pandas assigned to each column:
df.dtypes
Notice that dtypes has no parentheses: it is an attribute, unlike methods such as head() and info(). The reported types are a useful first clue—for example, whether a column was interpreted as text, whole numbers, or decimal values. They do not tell you whether that interpretation fits the question you plan to answer. A column containing numeric-looking text, for instance, may need further investigation before you use it in calculations.
How do I check the table’s structure and missing values?
Call info() for a compact structural summary:
df.info()
It reports the number of entries and columns, non-null counts, data types, and an approximate memory footprint. Compare each column’s non-null count with the table’s entry count: a lower count indicates that some values are missing. That summary identifies where to look, but it cannot tell you whether missing values are expected or important for your analysis.

After loading and previewing a table, use the first checks to guide closer inspection—not as a certification of data quality. Ask:
Rank #4
- Do the row and column labels and the values shown in the preview make sense for the file?
- Do the assigned column types fit what the values mean and what you intend to do with them?
- Which columns have fewer non-null values than entries, and does that missingness matter to your question?
Once you understand those basics, you can decide whether the data needs cleaning or is ready for a particular analysis. The pandas tutorial’s Titanic example contains 891 rows and 12 columns; those figures describe that example dataset, not pandas generally.
