On most Android phones, open Settings > Privacy > Ads to reset or delete your Advertising ID. This changes what happens to that particular advertising identifier; it does not turn off ads or stop every form of tracking. If the menu is different on your phone, search Settings for “Ads” or “Advertising ID.”
What the Advertising ID setting does
The Android Advertising ID is an identifier that apps can use for advertising, including ad personalization. Resetting it replaces the current ID with a new one. Deleting it removes the ID instead of assigning a replacement. Google documents both options in its Advertising ID help page.

Neither action guarantees that you will see fewer ads, or that apps will stop collecting or using data. Google cautions that apps may have their own settings that affect the ads you see, and apps may use other identifiers or data as well.

Choose reset or delete

To reset, Google’s documented path is Settings > Privacy > Ads > Reset Advertising ID. To delete it, use the delete option on the Ads screen if your device provides it. Google’s developer documentation describes the rollout of deletion support as beginning with Android 12 in late 2021 and expanding to Google Play-supported devices starting April 1, 2022; those dates describe rollout history, not a guarantee about a particular phone’s current menu.

Find the control if your Settings menu differs
Android menus vary by device maker and software version. Google also documents a newer route: Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads. If neither route matches your phone, search Settings for “Ads” or “Advertising ID.” Older Android versions may label the option Opt out of Ads Personalization under Privacy > Advanced > Ads; that is an older route, not a universal current label.
Other Android ad-privacy controls are separate
Android’s Ads privacy area also includes controls for Ad topics, App-suggested ads, and Ad measurement. These are distinct from resetting or deleting the Advertising ID. Google describes these options in its Manage your ad privacy settings on Android guide.

- Ad topics: Android can infer topics from apps used on the device, then share up to three topics at a time with an app for ad personalization. Topics are deleted after four weeks. Removing a topic prevents Android from sharing it again, but ads related to it may still appear.
- App-suggested ads: You can block an app from suggesting ads. Doing so deletes associated suggestion data, but related ads may still appear.
- Ad measurement: You can turn off this separate feature in the Ads privacy controls.
Google’s Android Help puts the limits plainly: “In your apps, an ad you see may be personalized depending on these settings, your advertising ID settings, and the policies of the apps that you use.”
What to expect after changing the setting
Ads can continue after you reset or delete the ID. The change concerns one advertising identifier, while ad personalization may also depend on app-specific policies, settings, and other data. If you want to limit more than the Advertising ID, review the separate Ads privacy options and the privacy or advertising settings inside the apps you use.

A 2024 study by Sebastian Zimmeck, Nishant Aggarwal, Zachary Liu, and Konrad Kollnig examined network traffic from 1,811 top-free apps in the US Google Play Store. The authors reported that neither Android’s AdID setting nor Global Privacy Control had a substantial impact on the examined apps’ data selling and sharing practices. That finding is limited to the apps and methods in the study; it does not establish how every Android app behaves.
