What has changed is where visibility can happen: alongside traditional search results, a page may be surfaced as a linked source in an AI-generated answer. Community discussions can also reach search audiences, but current evidence does not establish that accumulating mentions or posting on a particular platform is a general ranking factor.
Search visibility now includes AI answers, not just result-page rankings
Google describes AI Overviews as a way to summarize complex questions, while AI Mode supports exploration, reasoning and comparisons. Both can give searchers a path to sources beyond a conventional list of results. That makes a linked appearance in an AI answer a useful visibility outcome to consider alongside a standard organic listing; it does not make that appearance guaranteed or equivalent to a visit.

Google reported more than 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews and more than one billion monthly users for AI Mode in a post published June 3, 2026, and updated August 31, 2026. Those are Google’s own reported audience figures, not independent measurements. They indicate the scale Google attributes to its AI search products, not how many people will see a particular site or click a cited page. What Google says you need to appear in AI features
Google’s guidance is notably conservative about special optimization. Its Search Central documentation says, “The best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode).” It also states, “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” Google Search Central: AI features and your website
Eligibility is a prerequisite, not a promise
A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in Google Search to be considered for an AI feature. Even if it meets those conditions, Google says it may not crawl, index or serve the page. Technical eligibility therefore answers whether a page can be considered; it does not predict whether Google will select or cite it.
Rank #2
Keep the technical foundations in order
- Allow crawling and indexing where appropriate, and ensure important pages can be found through internal links.
- Make the page’s main information available as text, with clear headings and a structure people can follow.
- Use structured data accurately and ensure it reflects visible page content.
- Maintain a usable page experience and provide helpful, reliable, people-first information.
These are established search foundations, not a separate checklist that guarantees an AI answer citation. Google’s documentation on AI features and its Search documentation update log are the places to check for changes to its published guidance.
Make content distinctive rather than merely “AI-optimized”
Google’s May 2026 generative AI guide emphasizes valuable, distinctive content rather than material that simply repeats what is already available. The guide puts it plainly: “Don’t just recycle what others on the internet have already said, or could easily be produced by a generative AI model.” It frames the work as improving the search experience, not chasing a separate set of AI-only tricks. What distinctive value can look like
- First-hand expertise, documented methods, or clearly explained experience that adds information beyond a generic summary.
- Original comparisons, examples, data or analysis that help readers make a decision.
- Specific answers with enough context to be understood accurately when encountered outside the page’s surrounding copy.
- Clear sourcing and careful treatment of uncertainty, especially when advice depends on a version, location or changing product feature.
Google’s guide says special AI text files or markup are not required for Google Search. It also rejects tiny “chunking” of every passage and AI-only rewrites as requirements. Use structure because it helps readers and search systems understand a page, not because an imagined formatting rule guarantees inclusion. Google’s guide also says, “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Google Search Central: Guide to optimizing for generative AI features
Community visibility is valuable, but mentions are not a proven ranking shortcut
Community posts can be useful in their own right: they can answer real questions, share practical experience and introduce a source to people who might not find it elsewhere. Search systems may also surface discussion pages. That audience value should not be confused with proof that a brand’s mentions on Reddit or another forum directly improve its rankings.
A 2026 working paper by Zhang, Cui and Zhang examined Google AI Overviews and safe-for-work Reddit communities. It reports a 12.0 percent increase in daily comments in the studied communities when AI Overviews surfaced them, with especially notable effects around experience-based discussions. This is a bounded engagement result in a particular study. It measures community activity, not whether a company’s posting or mention-building raises its search rankings. Zhang, Cui and Zhang, “The Impact of AI Search on the Online Content Ecosystem: Evidence from Google and Reddit”
Participate to serve the community
- Answer questions where you have relevant expertise, and be transparent about your affiliation.
- Contribute useful detail even when a reader does not visit your site.
- Link to your own material only when it directly supports the answer and the community’s rules allow it.
Planted mentions, coordinated posting and repetitive self-promotion are not substitutes for distinctive site content or genuine participation. Google’s generative AI guidance warns against inauthentic mentions as a sound strategy and points to its spam protections. No evidence cited here establishes community mentions as a universal ranking signal.

Measure visibility separately from traffic and business outcomes
Google’s documentation says appearances in AI features are included in the overall Search Console Web performance report. Google later announced a broader set of generative AI Search insights and controls, with rollout to websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. The announced insights include impressions and information about which pages appear and in which countries. Availability and the exact reporting experience can change as Google updates its tools. Use the measures to answer different questions rather than treating one as a proxy for all the others:
| Measure | What it helps answer | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions or page appearances | Whether reported search visibility is changing, and which pages or countries are represented in the available insights. | Whether people visited, engaged with the page, or became customers. |
| Clicks and visits | Whether visibility is bringing people to the site. | Whether the visit was valuable or caused by an AI appearance without further analysis. |
| Engagement and conversions | Whether visitors continue to use the content or complete a meaningful action. | Whether a particular search feature caused the outcome unless the measurement supports that attribution. |
Compare trends over time and connect search reporting with appropriate site analytics and conversion tracking. Google’s reporting documentation establishes what it reports; it does not, by itself, show that AI citations cause a specific traffic or revenue result.

- Protect eligibility. Review crawl access, indexing, internal discovery, page experience, text availability and accurate structured data for the pages that matter.
- Prioritize original usefulness. Improve pages where your expertise, evidence or explanation can add something that a generic summary cannot.
- Structure for comprehension. Use descriptive titles, headings, concise explanations and supporting detail that make the page clear to a person arriving from any entry point.
- Engage in communities honestly. Choose discussions where you can help; do not treat mention counts as a search objective.
- Track the whole outcome. Watch reported visibility, visits, engagement and conversions as distinct measures, and avoid attributing a change to an AI feature without supporting evidence.
- Recheck platform guidance. Review current documentation when planning technical work, since Google’s published rules describe Google Search and may change.
For 2027, the defensible strategy is to make useful pages easy to discover, understand and trust, then measure how audiences find and use them. AI answers and community discussions add visibility surfaces; neither makes core SEO obsolete, and neither supplies a universal formula for being selected.
