If Windows shows UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (stop code 0x0000007F), start by undoing recent hardware, driver, or software changes, then run memory and manufacturer hardware diagnostics if crashes continue. The code has several possible causes, so it does not identify a specific failed part or driver by itself.
What the Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap stop code means
Microsoft defines bug check 0x7F as a trap generated by the Intel CPU that the Windows kernel did not catch. The first bug-check parameter identifies the trap number; parameter 0x8 means a double fault. Microsoft lists kernel stack overflow and hardware problems among possible causes of a double fault. A driver stack can also overflow in situations such as file-system recursion. Microsoft’s 0x7F reference describes these details.

Possible causes include faulty or mismatched memory, other failing hardware, incompatible drives or controllers, a motherboard or power-supply problem, overclocking, or a driver or service conflict. Incompatible software—including a device driver, system service, virus scanner, or backup tool—can also be involved during an operating-system upgrade. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of your particular PC.

Fix the error in a safe order
-
Record the stop code and recent changes
Note the exact code and, if displayed, its first parameter. Record whether the crashes began after installing hardware, a driver, an application, or an update, or after changing overclocking settings. A recent, repeatable change is a useful clue, but it does not prove causation.

-
Disconnect recently added hardware
Shut down the PC before removing or disconnecting newly installed hardware, then restart and see whether the error returns. If the device is internal and you are not comfortable removing it, ask the computer’s manufacturer or a qualified technician for help. Microsoft recommends removing recently added hardware as an early stop-code troubleshooting step. Microsoft Support’s guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
-
Use Safe Mode if Windows will not start reliably
If normal startup repeatedly crashes, use Windows recovery options to enter Safe Mode, then review recently installed drivers and software. If a new or updated driver immediately preceded the crashes, remove or replace it; if you cannot boot normally, follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance for accessing startup options. Avoid making several unrelated changes at once, so you can tell whether a change helps.

Review devices, drivers, and updates
Open Device Manager and look for devices marked with a warning symbol. For a device that plausibly matches the timing of the crashes, consider updating, disabling, or uninstalling its driver as appropriate. Install available Windows updates. For a 0x7F error, check the computer or component maker’s support page for relevant ACPI/BIOS, storage-controller, or network-card updates; confirm the exact system model and follow the maker’s instructions, especially for firmware updates.

Test memory and run the manufacturer’s diagnostics
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic and any hardware diagnostic supplied by the computer manufacturer. Faulty or mismatched memory is one documented possibility, but do not replace RAM solely because this stop code appeared. Use diagnostic results to guide any repair, and confirm the computer’s supported memory type and configuration before buying a replacement module.

-
Return overclocked settings to stock and check logs
If the CPU or other hardware is overclocked, return it to its default settings and check whether crashes recur. You can also review the System log in Event Viewer for events around the crash that identify a device or driver to investigate. A log entry is a clue, not necessarily proof that the named component caused the stop code.
-
Consider Windows recovery if the crashes persist
If the basic checks do not resolve recurring crashes, consider System Restore or another Windows recovery option that fits your situation. Protect personal files and review the consequences of the chosen option before proceeding; a full reinstall is not the first troubleshooting step.

Choose the next step by evidence, risk, and skill
| Evidence or situation | Practical next step | Risk or skill to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Crashes began after a particular device or software change | Undo that change where practical and retest. | Usually a reversible first check; avoid changing several things at once. |
| Device Manager warning or a recurring driver clue | Investigate the relevant device and its vendor-supported driver. | Use the correct model and driver; a warning or log entry alone does not prove root cause. |
| Memory diagnostic reports a problem | Seek a compatible memory repair or replacement based on the result. | Confirm memory compatibility; opening a PC may require technical skill. |
| Crashes continue without a clear software cause | Run manufacturer hardware diagnostics or seek qualified repair help. | Diagnostics may identify a failed component without requiring speculative part purchases. |
| Windows remains unstable after basic checks | Use an appropriate recovery option and protect personal data first. | Recovery options differ in their effects; review them before proceeding. |
When to get hardware help
Seek manufacturer support or a qualified repair technician if the crash continues after reversible software checks, a manufacturer diagnostic flags a component, or investigating the issue requires opening the PC or changing firmware. Microsoft recommends manufacturer-provided diagnostics to help identify failed hardware. Bring the exact stop code, any first parameter you recorded, diagnostic results, and the timeline of recent changes; these details can make the repair conversation more specific.
If you are comfortable analyzing crash dumps, Microsoft recommends starting with !analyze -v, comparing recurring patterns across dumps, and then using debugger commands such as kv and, depending on the stack, .trap or .tss. This requires Windows debugging tools and is not necessary for ordinary troubleshooting; the stop code and change history can instead help guide support.

A general storage check—not a 0x7F-specific fix
Microsoft Support suggests keeping roughly 10% to 15% of drive space free for Windows and applications to create swap files and perform other functions. This is general stop-code troubleshooting guidance, not an established cause or specific fix for UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP.
