Get a 2.4 GHz Xfinity WiFi Connection Without Replacing Your Router

Most Xfinity Gateways already use 2.4 GHz. Find out how to connect a device on your shared WiFi network or separate band names when your gateway supports it.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most Xfinity Gateways already broadcast WiFi on 2.4 GHz, so you usually do not need to add a radio or upgrade your router. A phone, camera, or smart-home device can often connect using the same WiFi name and password you already use. If a device’s setup requires a separate 2.4 GHz network name, you can try splitting the bands in the Xfinity app—but that option depends on your gateway and network configuration.

Do you need to add 2.4 GHz?

Usually, no. A dual-band gateway can broadcast on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz while using one shared WiFi name, also called an SSID. That shared name does not mean the 2.4 GHz radio is missing: the gateway can select a suitable band for a connected device. Xfinity recommends using one name and password across the bands for this reason. Xfinity’s WiFi settings guidance explains the naming choice and notes that availability varies with gateway model and settings management.

Some 2.4 GHz-only devices, especially smart-home products, may have trouble during setup if your phone is connected to 5 GHz. First try the device maker’s setup instructions while staying on your usual WiFi network. Create a distinct 2.4 GHz name only if the device’s setup process specifically requires you to select that band.

How to give the 2.4 GHz band a separate name

If your Xfinity setup exposes the control, use the Xfinity app to change the gateway’s band names. The exact wording can change as the app is updated.

  1. Sign in to the Xfinity app while connected to your home network.
  2. Open WiFi, then select WiFi details.
  3. Choose Edit WiFi settings.
  4. Look for the setting to use different names and passwords for the gateway’s broadcast bands.
  5. If the setting is available and the device requires it, give the 2.4 GHz band a distinct name and save the change.

Use a name you can recognize during setup. A network name change may mean devices need to reconnect; changing a password can require reconnecting them as well. Xfinity notes this reconnection effect in its WiFi Extenders support information.

Why the separate-band option may be missing

The app does not offer band-name separation in every configuration. Check whether Xfinity WiFi Extenders are installed and whether the gateway is managing advanced WiFi settings automatically. Either condition can prevent the separate-naming option from appearing. Xfinity’s instructions for changing WiFi details describe these limits.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

If extenders are on your network, Xfinity requires one shared WiFi name and password for the extender setup. The gateway still uses its available bands; the requirement is about keeping a single network name and password, not disabling 2.4 GHz. Avoid treating suggestions to remove extenders temporarily as official or universally safe workarounds.

Which settings path applies to your gateway?

Separate band names and advanced radio controls are different settings. If you are looking for channel or WiFi mode controls, Xfinity documents the app route WiFi > View WiFi equipment > Advanced settings > WiFi bands for supported setups. Access varies by gateway generation:

XB2 Use the Admin Tool for advanced WiFi settings.
XB3 without extenders Advanced WiFi settings can be managed in the Xfinity app.
XB6 and newer Advanced settings may be managed automatically, leaving some controls unavailable in the app and Admin Tool.

These model distinctions come from Xfinity’s guidance on changing WiFi channel and mode settings. Confirm the gateway model before trying a menu path; a control documented for one generation may not appear on another.

When to use the Admin Tool—or contact Xfinity

For a gateway and setting that Xfinity supports through the Admin Tool, connect to your home network and enter 10.0.0.1 in a browser. The tool is not a universal override: Xfinity says some advanced controls on XB6-and-newer gateways may be unavailable when settings are managed automatically. If the app does not show band separation, check extender status and gateway model, then contact Xfinity support rather than assuming another menu or Admin Tool change will enable it.
