To save a webpage screenshot from headless Chrome, run chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/. Chrome saves a PNG named screenshot.png in the command’s current working directory. Change the executable name or path if Chrome is installed under a different name on your system.
Take a screenshot from the command line
- Open a terminal and move to the folder where you want the image saved.
- Run the command below, replacing the URL with the page to capture:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/ - Look in that folder for
screenshot.png.
Chrome’s Headless command-line reference documents --screenshot as saving screenshot.png in the current working directory. The command creates a viewport-sized screenshot; it should not be assumed to capture an entire long page.

Choose the capture dimensions and wait
Set the viewport
--window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT sets the browser window dimensions used for the capture. For example, --window-size=1280,900 requests a 1280-by-900 viewport. Use dimensions that match the layout you need to inspect; a responsive site may render differently at another size.

Add --timeout with a value in milliseconds if the page needs time before Chrome captures it:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 --timeout=5000 https://example.com/
The documented timeout is a maximum wait: Chrome captures when that time is reached even if the page is still loading. It does not guarantee that delayed scripts, images, animations, or other site-specific content have finished. Check the resulting image and adjust the wait if appropriate; a longer delay cannot guarantee readiness for every page.

What this command captures—and what it does not
The basic command is suited to a quick screenshot of the current viewport. The cited current command-line reference does not provide a complete recipe for capturing an entire long document or waiting for a particular application state. If you need full-page output, precise readiness conditions, or repeatable control of page interactions, use browser automation through an API such as Puppeteer rather than assuming the basic CLI flag will capture or wait for everything. The older Headless Chrome shell documentation notes that full-page screenshots need additional work and is marked deprecated; it should not be treated as the current CLI guide.

Chrome’s command-line reference also documents --dump-dom and --print-to-pdf. --dump-dom is not a raw HTML download: Chrome parses the page, runs scripts that may change the DOM, then serializes the resulting DOM. The --timeout option can bound the wait before screenshot, DOM, or PDF output.

Troubleshooting
- Chrome says the command is not found: the executable may have a different name or may not be on your PATH. Use the installed Chrome executable’s name or full path.
- The PNG is not where you expected: Chrome writes
screenshot.pngto the terminal’s current working directory. Change directories before running the command or look in the directory from which it was launched. - The image is blank or incomplete: the page may still be loading, may depend on delayed scripts or assets, or may show a login or bot-check screen. Try a suitable
--timeout, then inspect the result; the timeout is not a site-readiness guarantee. - The image has the wrong layout: set an explicit
--window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHTand rerun the capture. - You need the full document or a specific element after it appears: the basic command does not document those controls. Use an automation API with the page-state and capture controls your task requires.
