Build an AWS-native monitoring dashboard by mapping your media workflow to its actual AWS resources, selecting CloudWatch metrics and dimensions that identify those resources, arranging focused widgets around operational questions, and setting alarms for conditions that need action. Keep this operational view separate from cost reporting: CloudWatch metrics help diagnose service health, while AWS’s Media Services Insights Hub analyzes cost and usage from Cost and Usage Report data.

Choose the right view for the question

AWS service consoles, a custom CloudWatch dashboard, and the Media Services Insights Hub serve different purposes. Use service consoles for service-specific inspection, CloudWatch for a cross-resource operational view and threshold alarms, and the Insights Hub for cross-service spend and usage analysis.

View Best suited to Coverage and detail Alerting and prerequisites
AWS service consoles Inspecting resources within an individual service. Service-specific views; the information available varies by service. For example, the MediaLive service console shows only some metrics, while CloudWatch can show all MediaLive metrics. AWS MediaLive metric viewing documentation. Capabilities vary by console. Check the service documentation for the view and alerting options you plan to use.
Custom CloudWatch dashboard Operational health, resource-level diagnosis, and incident response across a workflow. Widgets can bring together relevant CloudWatch metrics. Choose service namespaces and dimensions that preserve context such as a MediaPackage channel or endpoint, or a MediaConvert queue or job. AWS MediaConvert CloudWatch documentation. CloudWatch supports dashboards and threshold alarms that can notify or trigger actions. Metric availability, cadence, and applicable charges depend on the metric and retrieval path; check current AWS documentation and pricing.
Media Services Insights Hub Cross-service cost and usage analysis. A QuickSight dashboard built from Cost and Usage Report data. Documented service coverage includes MediaConnect, MediaConvert, MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaTailor. AWS Media Services Insights Hub documentation. Requires Cloud Intelligence Dashboards foundations and CUR, Athena, and QuickSight resources. It is a cost and usage view, not a replacement for live operational metric alarms.

Map the media workflow before adding widgets

Start with the workflow the team actually operates. A generic dashboard with service-level totals can conceal whether a problem is isolated to a channel, flow, queue, job, or endpoint.

  1. Inventory services and Regions. List each AWS Media Service in the workflow, the Region where it runs, and its role in ingest, processing, packaging, delivery, or playback.
  2. Identify the resources operators troubleshoot. Record the relevant channels, flows, queues, jobs, endpoints, and other resource identifiers. Focus on the level at which someone can investigate or take action.
  3. Write down operational questions. Examples include whether requests reach a MediaPackage endpoint, whether HTTP responses are returning errors, or whether a MediaConvert queue or job is showing the metric behavior operators expect.
  4. Choose one dashboard scope. A workflow-specific dashboard is often easier to diagnose than one that mixes unrelated Regions and resources. If you do combine them, label Regions and resource context clearly.

Select metrics and dimensions that identify the problem

CloudWatch groups metrics by service namespace and dimension combinations. Use dimensions that let an operator move from a signal to the resource that needs attention, and verify the exact available metrics and dimensions in current documentation for each service.

Use service-specific groupings

  • MediaConvert: AWS documents operation, queue, and job metric groupings. Select the grouping that matches the question: a broad service or operation view, queue behavior, or a particular job. MediaConvert CloudWatch metrics.
  • MediaPackage: Metrics use service-specific dimensions, including channel and endpoint-related dimensions. Keep the relevant endpoint or channel context in the widget rather than combining unrelated resources into an unexplained total. MediaPackage metrics documentation.
  • MediaConnect: Check the metric’s documented cadence and dimensions. Gateway metrics have different minimum period guidance from most other MediaConnect metrics. MediaConnect monitoring documentation.
  • MediaLive: Do not assume the service console displays the full metric set. AWS says CloudWatch can show all MediaLive metrics, whereas the MediaLive console shows only some. MediaLive metric viewing documentation.

Build each widget around a question

Choose a visualization and statistic that make the question easy to answer. A time series can show changes in a metric over time; a request or status panel can make volume and response categories easier to scan. Give each widget a specific title that identifies the service, resource or dimension, and signal. Avoid interpreting an aggregate as proof that every underlying resource is healthy.

Create a focused CloudWatch dashboard

  1. Open CloudWatch in the Region you intend to monitor. Confirm that the selected metrics and resources belong to the expected Region; do not assume a dashboard’s view automatically gives a complete picture of resources in every Region.
  2. Create a custom dashboard. In the CloudWatch console, create a dashboard for the workflow or operating team. Add widgets for the operational questions identified during workflow mapping.
  3. Select the service metric and dimensions. Choose the namespace, metric, and dimension values for the intended resource. For MediaPackage, AWS’s Media Server Side (MSS) troubleshooting guide demonstrates a CloudWatch dashboard pattern using endpoint EgressRequestCount and HTTP status-code ranges. It is an MSS-specific example: adapt its metric dimensions, Region, statistic, and period to your actual endpoint and current service documentation rather than copying its configuration indiscriminately. AWS MediaPackage MSS troubleshooting guide.
  4. Set the statistic and period to fit the signal. Consult the selected service metric’s documentation. Do not apply one period across all media services or infer a shared publication cadence.
  5. Arrange widgets in diagnostic order. Put broad workflow signals where operators can see them, then place resource-level views nearby so they can investigate a change without losing its context. Label Regions and dimensions wherever ambiguity is possible.
  6. Save and review the dashboard with the team that will use it. Confirm that the chosen resources, labels, and time ranges make it possible to find the affected workflow component quickly.

Set alarms for conditions that require action

A dashboard makes metrics visible; an alarm watches a defined condition and can notify or trigger an action. Create alarms for signals with a clear operational response, and base their thresholds on the workflow’s service-level objectives and validated operating history. There is no universal threshold in the AWS guidance cited here that is appropriate for every service and workload.

  • Choose a metric, dimensions, statistic, and period that correspond to the resource and failure mode you intend to detect.
  • Set the threshold and evaluation behavior according to the service objective and observed normal operation, not an unexplained value copied from an example.
  • Configure the notification or action path and confirm the responsible team can respond.
  • Review alarms when workload, workflow design, or operating objectives change.

Account for metric cadence and retention

Metric refresh, access periods, and retention are service-specific. AWS states that the CloudWatch console’s minimum refresh rate for MediaLive is 30 seconds. Most MediaConnect metrics can be accessed in periods as short as one second, while MediaConnect Gateway metrics require a period of at least one minute. These are documented service specifications, not a guarantee of end-to-end detection or notification latency. Check current service guidance for the metric and retrieval path you actually use.

AWS’s MediaPackage and MediaConnect metric guidance reports 15-month retention for the cited service metrics or statistics. That retention figure is specific to the cited services and metrics; it should not be generalized to every metric, API, or dashboard across AWS Media Services. MediaPackage metrics and MediaConnect monitoring.

Build a separate dashboard for cost and usage

Operational metrics answer whether services and resources are behaving as expected. They do not, by themselves, answer which services, workflows, or periods account for spend. For that analysis, AWS’s Media Services Insights Hub uses Cost and Usage Report data in a QuickSight dashboard and covers MediaConnect, MediaConvert, MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaTailor.

The documented prerequisites include Cloud Intelligence Dashboards foundations and CUR, Athena, and QuickSight resources. Treat the hub as a cost and usage analysis tool, not as a substitute for CloudWatch’s operational dashboard and alarms. Check current AWS documentation and pricing against your account configuration before estimating setup or ongoing costs. Media Services Insights Hub prerequisites and coverage.

Validate the finished monitoring setup

  • Every widget answers an operational question and names the resource context it represents.
  • Dimensions and Region match the workflow components operators diagnose.
  • Metric periods and refresh expectations follow the selected service’s current documentation.
  • Alarms use thresholds tied to an operational objective and have an assigned response path.
  • Cost and usage analysis is handled separately from real-time operational monitoring.
  • CloudWatch, QuickSight, and data-foundation costs are checked for the actual account, configuration, and retrieval path.
