The practical lesson is to test it on a small, recurring task—such as finding a saved note or organizing rough thoughts—and see whether its connections reduce friction for you. That is an individual experience, not proof that Gemini is better than other assistants or will save everyone time.
Why Gemini first felt redundant
The XDA author described already using ChatGPT, Claude, and local models, so another general-purpose chat window did not seem to offer a clear reason to become part of their regular routine. Their view shifted after they explored ways Gemini could work with services they already used. The examples below are the author’s reported experience; they are not independently reproduced tests. Where familiar connections can help
The author connected Google Maps, Gmail, and Google Keep, and also explored Calendar, Drive, YouTube, and Android Auto. They described using Gemini to ask about places and directions, find information in the inbox, retrieve saved notes, and work with Calendar or Drive context. These examples show the kind of fit they found, not a guarantee that every service or action is available to every user.
Google describes the feature this way: “Gemini Apps can connect to other apps to complete your request and give you more helpful responses.” Its documentation includes examples such as summarizing Gmail, creating Calendar events, searching productivity apps, finding and playing media, and some device controls. Which apps and actions you can use depends on factors including location, language, device, account, and Gemini app. Review the available connections and actions in your own Connected Apps settings before building a routine around them. Small tasks are a sensible place to start
The author found recurring value in modest jobs: cleaning up rough notes, turning scattered thoughts into lists, and organizing information they had collected. These are useful trial tasks because you can quickly judge whether the result helps without handing over a high-stakes decision. Try one task you already repeat, then assess whether the connected context makes Gemini easier to use than your existing method. There is no established time-saved figure or measured productivity gain behind this anecdote.
Check eligibility before connecting apps
Connected Apps require you to be signed in, and eligibility is not uniform. For personal accounts, Google says the Keep Activity setting affects access: with it off, Connected Apps are unavailable on Gemini web, iOS, and smart watches, while a narrower set of apps remains available on Android. Google’s documentation also notes that availability varies by account and other circumstances. Check the current settings in your Gemini app rather than assuming a workflow described elsewhere will appear for you. Work and school accounts have additional restrictions
For a work or school account, access can depend on Workspace edition, administrator enablement, location, language, device, and account type. Google documents Connected Apps work with services such as Gmail, Drive, Keep, Calendar, and Tasks, but not every action is supported: for example, Gemini cannot create a Gmail draft or delete Gmail messages through Connected Apps. If an integration is missing, check with your administrator and consult Google’s Workspace account guidance rather than assuming your organization’s account behaves like a personal one.

Understand the data-use implications first
Connecting an app can make relevant content available to the Gemini workflow. Google says Gemini Apps activity, including connected-app data, may be used to improve Google services and train generative AI models when Keep Activity is on. Google distinguishes that from training directly on source data such as Gmail inboxes, Drive, Contacts, Calendar, and Google Photos imagery or audio: it says summaries, excerpts, generated media, and inferences may be used instead. Google cautions users not to connect apps containing personal or confidential information they would not want used for training. Read Google’s data-use disclosure and decide whether the connection suits the information in your account before enabling it.
What to make of the author’s change of mind
The useful conclusion is about fit, not a general ranking of AI assistants. Gemini may be worth another look if Google services are already central to your routine and the actions you need are available on your account. If you do not use those services, your administrator blocks the integrations, or the data-use terms do not suit your needs, the author’s experience may not translate to yours. The reviewed material provides no head-to-head model-quality benchmark or quantified productivity comparison.
