Choose Gemini if your notes and task list live in Google Workspace; choose ChatGPT if you want to start with meeting or voice-note audio, or work with files through a supported connected app. Neither tool is established as more accurate at extracting tasks: the official documentation describes workflows and cautions, not a controlled comparison using identical notes. In either case, check each proposed task against the source before you create it.
How the workflows differ
The key difference is not simply which assistant can summarize notes. It is where the notes come from and where the resulting tasks need to go. Gemini has documented connections to Google Docs, Drive, Google Tasks, and Keep, as well as meeting features in Google Meet. ChatGPT offers an audio-first workflow with Record and can use supported connected apps to work with files or take authorized actions.

Gemini: move from Google Workspace material into Google tasks
Gemini Apps can use connected Workspace services to find or summarize information in Gmail, Docs, and Drive. With the relevant connection enabled, users can also ask Gemini to add or edit tasks and reminders in Google Tasks, or create and retrieve notes and lists in Keep. Google describes those notes as covering summaries, decisions, action items, and details. Meet’s “Ask Gemini” can also summarize discussions and list takeaways, decisions, and action items. ChatGPT: start with audio or work through a connected app
ChatGPT Record can transcribe and summarize meetings, brainstorms, and voice notes. Its summaries are saved as canvases in chat history, where you can ask ChatGPT to turn them into a project plan, email, or another deliverable. The cited OpenAI help page specifies macOS desktop and lists Plus, Enterprise, Edu, Business, and Pro workspaces as eligible. It does not establish that every account or platform has Record. For existing documents, ChatGPT connected apps can provide access to services such as Google Drive or Slack. Depending on the app and its permissions, ChatGPT may find a file, summarize a document, or take a supported action. OpenAI’s Google Drive examples include “Find the latest project plan in my Google Drive and summarize the next steps” and “Update this document with the action items from our meeting.” Updating a file requires the relevant action to be available and authorized; it is not guaranteed by connecting Drive alone. ChatGPT Projects can keep related conversations, files, and context together for ongoing planning. They provide a place to organize work, but are not themselves a task manager. See OpenAI’s Projects documentation.

These are workflow fits, not evidence that one assistant extracts tasks more accurately. Gemini’s connected-app and Meet features have account, edition, language, region, or administrator-setting conditions. OpenAI says connected-app availability varies by app, plan, region, workspace, role, model, and interface. Record has its own platform and plan conditions. How to turn notes into tasks without inventing commitments
Use a prompt that requires evidence for each task and distinguishes an explicit commitment from a suggestion. This is a practical prompt, not a guaranteed product feature:
From these notes, create a task list. For each task, include the exact supporting note, owner only when explicitly named, deadline only when explicitly stated, and mark missing owners or deadlines as “not specified.” Separate decisions from tasks. Do not infer commitments. Then ask me to confirm before creating tasks.

If you are using a connected app that can create or edit tasks, review the proposed list first and authorize the action only after confirming it. If the tool cannot write to your chosen destination, use the output as a draft rather than assuming the task was saved.

Check the output against the original notes, especially where an assistant may have turned discussion into an apparent commitment. Google says Meet notes may be incomplete, inaccurate, or not generated, and recommends reviewing and editing them. Google also warns that Gemini can hallucinate or provide outdated information. OpenAI cautions that Record transcriptions may contain mistakes. Those warnings make source-checking important regardless of which product you choose.

- Task: Does the source state a concrete action, or only raise an idea?
- Owner: Was a person explicitly assigned, or did the assistant infer one?
- Deadline: Was a date or time actually stated? Do not treat a relative phrase as a confirmed date without checking context.
- Destination: Did the task appear in Google Tasks, Keep, a document, or another connected service—or is it only in the assistant’s response?
- Source fidelity: Does the task preserve the original meaning and any conditions or dependencies?

Gemini is the more direct documented choice when the source and destination are Google Workspace services—particularly Google Docs or Drive into Google Tasks or Keep, or eligible Meet notes into a Doc. ChatGPT is a natural fit when the input is meeting or voice-note audio handled with Record, or when a supported connected app provides the file access and actions you need. For either tool, verify account eligibility and review the source, task, owner, and deadline before relying on the result. The cited official documentation does not establish an accuracy winner.
