Gemini can handle voice conversations on an iPhone, but it cannot take over as the system-wide assistant. The closest documented workaround is to create or use a Gemini shortcut in Apple’s Shortcuts app, then ask Siri to run it by name. That opens Gemini; it does not make Gemini continuously available through Siri’s system controls.
What Gemini can do on iPhone
Google’s Gemini app supports typed and voice chats, Gemini Live, and prompts involving images or the camera. Google says some features can be used without signing in; additional features and saved activity require a Google Account. Availability and features can vary by account, language, location, and whether the account is managed by a school or workplace. Voice use is still use of the Gemini app, not a replacement for Siri across iOS. Google says the microphone can remain open for up to five minutes while listening to a voice prompt. That is a limit described for listening to a prompt, not evidence that Gemini can stay active as an always-listening iPhone assistant.

How to launch Gemini with Siri
- Install and open Gemini. Confirm the app and the features you want are available for your device, account, language, and location.
- Look for a Gemini action in Shortcuts. Open Apple’s Shortcuts app and check whether Gemini offers an App Shortcut or other suitable action on your current device and app version. Google’s iPhone help explains voice use in Gemini but does not guarantee that the same shortcut action or label is available to everyone.
- Create or select a shortcut and give it a distinctive name. Keep the name short and easy to say. Apple says Siri can run shortcuts in your collection by name; the exact steps and available action depend on the shortcut exposed by Gemini.
- Ask Siri to run that shortcut. Say the shortcut’s name. Siri will launch the associated Gemini workflow, handing the interaction to the app rather than transferring system-assistant control to Gemini. Apple’s guide to running shortcuts with Siri explains the voice invocation.
If the shortcut needs to open Gemini while the iPhone is locked, you may be asked to unlock the phone before it continues.

Optional: use the Action button
On an iPhone with an Action button, you can configure the button to launch an App Shortcut, if a suitable Gemini shortcut is available. This gives you a one-press route into the app; it is optional, and Siri can run a shortcut by voice without it. Apple documents the setup in its Action button guide.
What the workaround does—and does not—change
- It can shorten the route to Gemini: Siri can trigger a named shortcut that opens an app workflow.
- It does not make Gemini the default iPhone assistant: the official Apple and Google guidance cited here does not establish that Gemini can replace Siri system-wide, listen continuously in Siri’s place, or control iOS as Siri does.
- It may require an unlocked phone: an app-opening shortcut can stop at the lock screen until you authenticate.
- It does not guarantee every Android feature on iPhone: Google says connected-app availability depends on the Gemini app, device, country, and other factors; apps available only in the Android Gemini app will not appear on iOS. See Google’s Connected Apps information.
Google also cautions that some AirPods and Apple Watch models may not work with the Gemini app. The app’s voice features and device integrations can change, so check Google’s current iPhone app guidance for your setup.

Gemini versus Siri: the comparison is changing
As of Apple’s September 14, 2026 announcement, a beta rollout of Siri AI is planned with iOS 27 and other 2027 operating-system releases. Apple describes follow-up conversations and access through “Hey Siri” or the side button. Apple says the feature requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled device and a supported language, and is initially unavailable in the EU and China. Those are announced rollout details, not a guarantee that the feature is already available on every eligible phone; consult Apple’s announcement for current status.

Apple’s existing Siri and Apple Intelligence features also vary by iPhone, language, and region. Its iPhone user guide describes those eligibility limits. As a result, whether Gemini or Siri better fits a particular task depends partly on the device and location, not only on the assistants’ feature lists.

When to use each route
- Use Gemini directly when you want its app-based voice chat, Gemini Live, or image and camera prompts.
- Use Siri to launch Gemini when a named Shortcuts action is available and you want to reach the app with a voice command.
- Use Siri itself when you need the built-in assistant’s iPhone-level access or an iOS action that Gemini’s app shortcut does not provide.
