Gemini Live is not necessarily unrecorded. Google says that when Keep Activity is on, Live transcripts and content shared during a session can be saved in Gemini Apps Activity. With Keep Activity off, future chats may still be retained for up to 72 hours. Live audio, video, and screenshares are not used to improve Google services by default, but a separate opt-in can allow that use.
What Google saves when you use Gemini Live
For signed-in use covered by Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, different kinds of Live data are handled differently. Google says transcripts and content shared with Gemini Live are saved in Gemini Apps Activity when Keep Activity is on. It also says Live transcripts may be used to improve services, including AI models, under that setting.

Live audio, video, and screenshares have a separate rule: Google says they are not used to improve its services by default. That default does not mean the media is never processed or temporarily retained to provide the feature or protect users.
Google’s notice covers signed-in Gemini Apps use. It directs people using Gemini while signed out to the general Google Privacy Policy. Google Ireland Limited provides Gemini Apps in the EEA and Switzerland; Google LLC serves elsewhere. Managed, supervised, and Workspace accounts may have additional configurations not resolved by these consumer-facing explanations.

Turning Keep Activity off changes how future activity is handled; it is not a promise that a session is never temporarily stored or processed. It also does not automatically erase activity saved before the setting was changed.
How to control use of Live audio, video, and screenshares
Google provides a separate control labelled “Improve Google services with your audio and Gemini Live videos and screenshares.” Google says it is off by default and can be enabled only while Keep Activity is on. If the labels or menus differ in your app, look in the current Gemini Apps Activity settings.

- Open Gemini in the mobile app or on the web and go to Gemini Apps Activity.
- Check whether Keep Activity is on. The Live media improvement control is available only when it is on.
- Review the “Improve Google services with your audio and Gemini Live videos and screenshares” setting. Leave it off if you do not want to opt in to improvement use of those media types.
Google describes the default in its Gemini Apps Privacy Hub this way: “Your Gemini Live audio, video and screenshares are not used to improve Google services by default.” This is Google’s description of its setting, not an independent audit finding. The separate opt-in applies to Live media; it should not be confused with the treatment of transcripts when Keep Activity is on.
How long Gemini activity and reviewed data can remain
Google says Gemini Apps Activity is set to auto-delete after 18 months by default. In Activity settings, users can choose 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months, turn off auto-delete, and review or delete activity. These options govern account activity; they are distinct from Google’s retention of copies that have already been reviewed.

Google says data selected for review and sent to service providers is disconnected from the account and retained for up to three years. Because those reviewer copies are no longer linked to the account, deleting an activity item does not necessarily delete material already reviewed.

These periods are retention terms stated by Google, not independent measurements. Account activity and reviewer copies are separate retention tracks.

Can people review Gemini Live chats?
Google says a subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers, including trained service providers, to improve services and protect users. It says reviewed data sent to providers is disconnected from the account and retained for up to three years.

Which settings matter most for privacy?
- For less account-linked activity: turn Keep Activity off for future chats, understanding Google’s stated temporary retention of up to 72 hours.
- For Live media improvement use: leave the separate audio, video, and screenshare improvement setting off.
- For saved activity: use Gemini Apps Activity to review or delete items and choose an auto-delete period.
- For previously reviewed material: do not assume deleting account activity removes disconnected reviewer copies.
The three controls address different things: whether future activity is saved in the account, whether Live media may be used for improvement, and how long account activity is kept. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub and activity-management help describe the current terms and controls.
