The steps and features below reflect Google’s Android help guidance; availability and interface changes can vary by device, account, language, and rollout. Gemini Live is not available in the Gemini web app or Google Messages, according to Google’s Gemini Live help.
What you need before starting Gemini Live
Use the Gemini mobile app or Gemini as a mobile assistant, a signed-in account with access, and the latest Google app. Google also provides an iPhone and iPad version of its Live help, but the detailed steps below follow the Android documentation; controls and availability may differ across platforms as Google releases changes gradually.

Live is a spoken conversation you can interrupt. You can use it to brainstorm, explore a subject, or practice speaking aloud. You do not need Pixel Buds to use the app.

Start a Gemini Live conversation
- Open the Gemini mobile app.
- Tap Live at the bottom of the screen, or swipe left to enter Live.
- If this is your first time, complete the on-screen instructions, then start talking.
Google also documents the voice prompts “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” and “Hey Google, let’s talk.” Pixel Buds can provide an optional hands-free way to start a Live chat with “Hey Google, let’s talk”; they are not required for the standard app workflow.

Change Gemini Live’s voice
- In the Gemini mobile app, tap Menu.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then Settings.
- Tap Gemini’s Voice.
- Tap a voice name to hear it, then tap Confirm.
The voice setting applies across Gemini Apps, including Live and spoken responses in other features. Google’s voice settings help page notes that the change-voice option is unavailable in some languages and that the number of choices varies by language. If the setting or a particular voice is missing, it may not be available in your language.
Share your camera with Gemini Live
Use camera sharing when you want Gemini to see the physical scene around you—for example, an object or text you are looking at.

- Start a Live conversation.
- Tap the camera control to share the camera view.
- If needed, switch between the front and rear camera using the camera controls.
- Tap the camera control again when you want to stop sharing.
Camera sharing turns off if you put Live on hold, leave the Gemini mobile app, or lock the screen. It does not automatically turn back on when you return to the app or unlock the screen; start sharing again if you want Gemini to see the camera feed.

Use screen sharing when the relevant context is on your device display, such as a page or app. Google says, “When you share your screen, your full screen is shared with Gemini.” Check what is visible before starting, especially for messages, account details, or other private information.

- Make sure Gemini Live notifications are enabled.
- From the Live screen, tap Turn on screen sharing.
- Follow the prompts to begin sharing.
- To stop, return to Gemini and tap Turn off screen sharing, or swipe down from the top of the screen and stop sharing on the Screen Sharing card.
Screen sharing stops if Live is put on hold or the screen locks. It does not resume automatically; turn it on again when you are ready to share.
Try Guided Vision for spoken descriptions
Guided Vision adds real-time spoken descriptions and help while you talk about what the camera sees. Google gives examples such as reading fine print or menus, comparing colors, finding household objects, describing text, and understanding surroundings. To try it, enable Use Guided Vision in Live in Gemini settings, start Live, and share the device camera. Google documents Android accessibility shortcuts and TalkBack entry points as additional ways to access the feature.

Guided Vision is rolling out gradually, so the setting may not yet appear for every user. Google warns that it can make mistakes and is not a medical device, mobility aid, or substitute for safe-travel guides. Do not rely on it for navigation or obstacle detection. Useful Live controls and privacy checks
- Hold and resume: You can pause a Live conversation and resume it. Holding Live stops camera or screen sharing.
- Mute: Muting turns off your microphone, but Gemini may continue speaking. Video or screen sharing can continue while muted, so stop sharing separately when you want the visual feed to end.
- Switch between voice and text: You can move between voice and text in the same chat rather than starting a new conversation.
- Interrupt Gemini: You can speak while Gemini is talking. The interrupt setting can be changed; tapping the screen is another option.
- Review a conversation: After ending Live, you can review its transcript, and Google says a previous Live chat can be resumed.
- Respect people in view: Ask permission before recording or including other people in a Live chat.
Google’s Gemini Live help also covers captions and other conversation controls. Camera and screen sharing are separate: choose the camera for your surroundings, or screen sharing for what is displayed on your device.
