A deal is genuinely good only if it is for the exact item you want, costs less after required charges, and comes from a seller you can trust. Compare the model and condition, check current prices elsewhere, calculate the checkout total, and factor in delivery and returns before deciding. There is no universal discount percentage that proves a price is good.
1. Make sure you are comparing the same item
Before comparing prices, note the manufacturer and model number, then record details that can change the price or what you receive:

- Size, color, generation, and capacity
- Condition: new, refurbished, used, or sold “as is”
- Bundle contents, accessories, and warranty
- Whether the listing is sold by the retailer or a marketplace seller
A lower price for a different configuration or condition is not a like-for-like deal. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) likewise advises shoppers to compare the manufacturer or model number and details such as size, color, and shipping. FTC online-shopping advice

2. Check the price against current alternatives
Look at several reputable retailers and comparison-shopping sites. Compare the same model, condition, seller type, and delivery terms, and check prices close together in time. Comparison sites are useful starting points, not proof: their rankings or listings may reflect commercial arrangements, so open the underlying offers and verify the seller and product details yourself. For a claimed record low or dramatic discount, ask:
- What are other sellers charging for this exact item now?
- Has it commonly been available near the advertised price?
- Was the higher “was” price a genuine selling price, rather than a reference point chosen to make the discount look larger?
A “save” label or percentage-off figure is a claim, not a comparison. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has published reference-pricing principles specifically for online mattress traders in the UK. They say a reference price should reflect genuine sales at that price over adequate volume and duration; those sector-specific principles are not a universal shopper rule or a test that applies everywhere. 3. Calculate what you will actually pay
Use the checkout total, not the banner price. Add the item price, shipping or delivery, handling, taxes, mandatory fees, and any required add-on or minimum-order spend. Separate optional extras from charges you must pay to get the advertised product.

4. Check the seller and the item for warning signs
Search the seller’s name separately from the ad, adding words such as “complaint,” “scam,” or “review.” Look for clear contact details, understandable return and warranty terms, and recent buyer feedback from more than one source. A high star average alone is not enough: reviews can be fake, and marketplace advice from the FTC recommends checking the seller and listing carefully. Read the condition description closely. “Refurbished,” “used,” “vintage,” “close-out,” and “as is” can mean you are not buying a new item or may have different warranty and return terms. For marketplace listings, check whether photos show the actual item and whether the seller’s terms are clear.
Be especially cautious when an expensive branded product is offered at an unusually low price. It may be counterfeit, or the seller may not send anything. The FTC advises researching the seller and comparing the price with offers elsewhere; a bargain-basement price on an expensive item is a reason for suspicion. 5. Include delivery, returns, and what happens if the price changes
Before paying, check the promised shipping or delivery date, the return window, who pays return shipping, any restocking fee, and whether sale or clearance items have different terms. If the price drops after purchase, see whether the retailer offers a price adjustment; do not assume it does. Keep the receipt and a copy of the offer and terms.
For U.S. shoppers, FTC guidance says sellers must ship as promised. If no shipping time is promised, the FTC’s summary of its rule says the seller generally must ship within 30 days after receiving the relevant order information or permission to charge. FTC online-shopping advice

6. Use a payment method with recourse
For U.S. shoppers, the FTC recommends paying by credit card when possible because a charge may be disputable if the goods do not arrive or the transaction goes wrong. Treat a seller’s demand for gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or another restricted payment method as a serious warning. A quick comparison before you buy
For each offer, write down the exact item and condition, current item price, checkout total, seller, delivery promise, return costs, and warranty or bundle differences. Then compare the advertised reference price with current alternatives. A cheaper listing may be worse value if it is a different configuration, has costly returns, or comes from a seller you cannot verify.
