Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGemini in Chrome is the only current, supported choice. ChatGPT Atlas has been retired and no longer receives updates, so it is not a live alternative for a present-day browser-AI comparison. Gemini in Chrome is built into eligible, signed-in Chrome profiles and can answer from the page you are viewing or from up to 10 recent tabs that you explicitly share. It can also connect to selected Google services and, for eligible subscribers in the United States, perform some multistep web tasks through Auto browse.
The practical question is therefore not which product wins a benchmark. It is whether Gemini’s tab context, account connections, permissions and regional limits fit your work—and how to handle Atlas data if you are moving away from it.

The current verdict: this is no longer a live head-to-head
OpenAI’s current Help Center says that “ChatGPT Atlas has been retired and no longer receives updates.” That changes the comparison fundamentally. Atlas should be treated as a discontinued reference point, not as an actively maintained browser you can choose alongside Gemini in Chrome.

Gemini in Chrome is Google’s browser-integrated assistant. Google describes it as “an AI assistant that’s located right in your Chrome browser tab.” Its value comes from keeping the assistant beside the page you are already using, rather than making you copy text into a separate chat window.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For everyday work in 2026, Gemini in Chrome is the better answer because it is available as a supported product and Atlas is not. The more useful evaluation is how much context you share, what the assistant is allowed to do, which account and country you use, and how you control or delete the resulting activity.
What Gemini in Chrome can do today
Ask about the current page
Gemini in Chrome uses the current tab by default. You can ask for a summary of a long article, an explanation of a technical term, a list of key claims, a study guide, or a rewrite based on the page you are reading. The answer is grounded in the content you have chosen to show it, so the quality depends on the page, your question and whether the relevant details are actually present.
Compare several pages without leaving Chrome
Chrome lets you share up to 10 recent open tabs for a response. This makes cross-page comparison one of the most useful everyday workflows: compare product specifications, reconcile several travel options, identify differences between competing policies, or combine research notes from multiple sources.
Only share the tabs needed for the question. A tab containing private messages, account details or unrelated work can add unnecessary context. Treat the tab-sharing choice as part of your prompt, not as an invisible background setting.
Use connected Google services
Google’s current Chrome information says Gemini works with Google products such as Calendar and YouTube. A January 2026 announcement names Connected Apps including Gmail, Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Shopping and Google Flights. Availability and the actions exposed by each connection can vary by account, country and rollout.
Connected Apps can make a question more useful than a page summary. For example, the assistant may help you relate a video to a topic you are studying, look at information associated with a Google service, or organize a planning question around calendar and travel context. Review what you are authorizing before enabling a connection; account context is more sensitive than the text of one public web page.

Transform an image in the browser
Google also documents Nano Banana image transformation in Chrome. It can transform an image in the current window without requiring you to download the image and upload it again to a separate tool. This is a convenience feature for quick edits and variations, not a replacement for a full image editor when you need precise layers, color management or repeatable production work.
Let Auto browse handle some multistep tasks
Auto browse is designed for multistep web tasks rather than a single answer. Google limits the documented rollout to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States. That restriction matters: seeing a description of Auto browse does not mean the control will appear on your account.
When an AI system can navigate several pages, the risk is different from asking it to summarize one page. Verify the target site, prices, dates, quantities and final totals before confirming anything consequential. For bookings, purchases or account changes, regard the assistant as a navigator and draft-maker unless the interface clearly shows the exact action it is about to take and gives you a chance to approve it.
Gemini in Chrome and Atlas compared
| Area | Gemini in Chrome | ChatGPT Atlas |
|---|---|---|
| Current status | Live and supported for eligible users, with feature availability varying by account and region. | Retired; OpenAI says it no longer receives updates. |
| Browser context | Uses the current tab by default and can use up to 10 recent open tabs that you share. | Not a current, maintained option for new workflows. |
| Connected services | Google documents integrations involving Calendar and YouTube; the January 2026 announcement also names Gmail, Maps, Google Shopping and Google Flights. | No current feature comparison is appropriate because the browser has been retired. |
| Multistep browsing | Auto browse is documented for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States at rollout. | Not available as a supported, updating product. |
| Desktop support | Google documents the current desktop update for Mac, Windows and Chromebook Plus. | Retired. |
| Mobile access | On iPhone and iPad, access is through Chrome’s Page tools. Android availability remains limited in the support documentation and depends on region and account. | Retired. |
| Privacy controls | Controls cover tab sharing, precise location, microphone access, browsing permission, pausing Gemini activity and deleting history. | Atlas-specific data must be handled separately from current ChatGPT data. |
| Migration | Can become your new browser workflow after you set up an eligible Chrome profile. | Bookmarks, open tabs, browsing history, cookies and signed-in sessions do not transfer automatically to another browser. |
Who can use Gemini in Chrome
Gemini in Chrome requires all of the following conditions:
- An eligible Chrome profile that is signed in.
- An up-to-date Chrome browser.
- A supported country or territory.
- A device and account combination included in Google’s rollout.
It is unavailable in Incognito and in profiles that are not signed in. The absence of the Gemini control therefore does not necessarily indicate a browser fault; it may reflect account, region, profile or rollout status.
Desktop requirements
Google documents the current desktop update for Mac, Windows and Chromebook Plus. You do not need a Chromebook Plus specifically: the feature is also documented for supported Mac and Windows installations. Hardware requirements can still matter indirectly because an old operating system or outdated Chrome build may prevent an eligible feature from appearing.

Phone and tablet access
On iPhone and iPad, Google says Gemini in Chrome is accessed through Chrome’s Page tools. Android availability is still limited in the support documentation, so check the account and region shown in your own Chrome installation instead of assuming that desktop behavior is mirrored on every Android device.
How to start using Gemini in Chrome
- Update Chrome. Install the current browser update for your Mac, Windows PC or Chromebook Plus device, then restart Chrome if it asks you to.
- Use an eligible signed-in profile. Open the Chrome profile menu and confirm that you are signed in. Do not test from Incognito, where Gemini in Chrome is unavailable.
- Open the assistant from Chrome. Use the Gemini in Chrome control or the browser’s Page tools, depending on your device and interface.
- Ask about the current tab first. Start with a bounded request such as “List the three main claims on this page and identify any dates.” This lets you see what context is being used.
- Add only the tabs you need. When comparing pages, select up to 10 recent open tabs. Check the selected list before sending a question.
- Review permissions. In Chrome’s Gemini settings, inspect controls for current-tab sharing, precise location, microphone access and “Let Gemini browse for you.” Enable only what your task requires.
- Connect services deliberately. If your account offers Connected Apps, read the permission description before enabling Gmail, Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Shopping or Google Flights access.
- Verify the result. Open the cited or underlying pages yourself when the answer affects money, travel, deadlines, health, legal obligations or account settings.
Everyday workflows that make the most of tab context
Summarizing one long article
Keep the article in the active tab and ask for the format you need: a five-bullet summary, a timeline, definitions for a beginner, or a list of open questions. If the article contains tables, footnotes or expandable sections, check whether those parts are visible and included before relying on the summary.
Comparing products or plans across tabs
Open the relevant pages, share only those tabs and request a fixed comparison such as price, included features, limits, cancellation terms and region. Ask Gemini to mark a field as “not stated” when a page does not provide it. That is safer than allowing a missing specification to be filled by assumption.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Building study material
Share the lesson or reference pages and ask for flashcards, a quiz with answers hidden below each question, or a glossary. Request that every answer be traceable to the shared material. If sources disagree, ask the assistant to show the disagreement instead of blending the claims.
Planning with connected services
For a calendar or travel question, state the constraints explicitly: dates, time zone, budget, locations and people involved. Connected data can make planning faster, but it also raises the cost of a mistaken assumption. Confirm the final event details or itinerary in the original service.
Handling an image without a download-and-upload loop
Use the documented image transformation control from the current browser window when you need a quick variation. Keep the original file separately if the image matters, and inspect the transformed result for unintended changes to text, faces, logos or fine details.

Can Gemini in Chrome book things or change accounts for you?
Gemini in Chrome can assist with multistep web tasks where Auto browse is available, but the documented feature is limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States at rollout. “Can help” should not be interpreted as “will safely complete every transaction.”

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy, permissions and activity controls
Control what the assistant can see
The main privacy decision is context selection. Current-tab sharing exposes the page you are working on; multi-tab sharing can expose up to 10 recent tabs; Connected Apps can expose information held by Google services. Share the smallest useful set and close or deselect sensitive tabs before asking a question.
Review device permissions
Chrome settings expose separate controls for precise location, microphone access and the “Let Gemini browse for you” permission. A request for a page summary normally does not require all of these. If a feature behaves unexpectedly, inspect each permission rather than granting every prompt automatically.
Pause or delete activity
Google says users can pause Gemini activity, control access and delete history. These are separate decisions from deleting a browser tab or clearing ordinary browsing history. Use the activity controls when you want to stop new Gemini activity from being retained or remove prior Gemini records, and check the confirmation text so you understand which account and history are affected.

What happens to ChatGPT Atlas data after retirement?
Retirement does not mean Atlas data automatically appears in another browser. OpenAI says Atlas bookmarks, open tabs, browsing history, cookies and signed-in sessions do not transfer automatically. Plan a separate migration if you need any of those items.
Atlas browser memories are separate from ChatGPT memories. Deleting ChatGPT chats therefore does not delete Atlas-specific data. Treat browser data and chat data as two different records, and use the controls provided for the relevant product or account rather than assuming one deletion action covers both.
A practical migration checklist
- List the Atlas data you actually need: bookmarks, saved pages, active tabs, history, cookies, sessions or memories.
- Move essential bookmarks and reference links into your chosen current browser using the transfer method available to you.
- Recreate active work manually; open tabs and signed-in sessions are not promised to transfer automatically.
- Sign in to the destination Chrome profile only after confirming that it is the account you intend to use with Gemini.
- Review Atlas-specific privacy and memory controls separately from ChatGPT chat deletion.
- After verifying the new setup, remove old sessions or data according to the Atlas account controls available to you.
Troubleshooting when Gemini in Chrome is missing or limited
The Gemini control does not appear
- Confirm that Chrome is updated.
- Check that you are using a signed-in, eligible profile.
- Leave Incognito and retry in a normal window.
- Verify that your country or territory is supported.
- Allow for account-level rollout differences; two users on the same browser version may not see identical controls.
Gemini cannot use another tab
Make sure the tab is among the recent open tabs offered for sharing and that you explicitly selected it. A page that is open but not shared is not the same as a page Gemini is allowed to use. If the page contains a login wall, dynamic content or an embedded document, ask for a summary only after confirming that the relevant text is visible.
Recommended Free Tools
Auto browse is unavailable
Check the documented eligibility first: Auto browse is limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States at the cited rollout. If your plan, country or account does not match, use ordinary page questions and manual navigation instead of treating the missing control as a browser defect.
The mobile experience differs from desktop
On iPhone and iPad, look in Chrome’s Page tools. Android support is more limited in the available documentation, so check the current controls in your region and account. Do not assume that a desktop feature or a Connected App is available on every phone.
Which browser AI is better for common tasks?
| Task | Best current approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Summarize the page you are reading | Gemini in Chrome | It is built into the current Chrome tab and can use that page as context. |
| Compare several web pages | Gemini in Chrome | You can explicitly share up to 10 recent tabs in one request. |
| Use calendar, video, map or shopping context | Gemini in Chrome, where the relevant Connected App is available | Google documents these integrations, but access varies by account and region. |
| Run a multistep web task | Gemini Auto browse, only where eligible | The documented rollout is restricted to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States. |
| Use Atlas as a maintained browser | Neither; Atlas is retired | OpenAI says Atlas no longer receives updates. |
| Preserve Atlas browser state | Manual migration | Bookmarks, tabs, history, cookies and signed-in sessions do not transfer automatically. |
Bottom line for everyday users
Choose Gemini in Chrome if you want a supported assistant beside the page you are reading, need to compare up to 10 shared tabs, or can benefit from eligible Google service connections. Start with narrow, low-risk requests, select context deliberately and keep permissions limited to the task.
Do not choose between Gemini in Chrome and Atlas as if both were current products. Atlas is retired, receives no updates and requires separate handling for its browser data. If you are migrating, preserve the Atlas information you need first, then set up Gemini in an eligible signed-in Chrome profile and verify which features your account and region actually provide.
