Gems and Skills both save instructions so you do not have to repeat them in every prompt. The main difference is how you reuse that guidance: a Gem is a customized Gemini helper you return to, while a Skill can be selected for a task, applied automatically when relevant, or combined with other Skills. As of October 3, 2026, Google says the transition from Gems to Skills is planned to start in November 2026; Gems have not yet been removed or automatically migrated.
What is the difference between Gemini Gems and Skills?
Google describes Gems as a way to give Gemini “specific and repeatable instructions” for a customized helper. Skills are “a set of reusable instructions and additional context.” Both are intended for recurring tasks, but Skills have more explicit options for selecting and combining reusable guidance.

In practice, a Gem is a named helper tailored to a recurring goal or area of expertise. You return to it when you want Gemini to follow those instructions again. A Skill packages instructions and context for use across chats and tasks. You can choose a Skill yourself or let Gemini apply a turned-on Skill when it judges that Skill relevant. Google also documents combining multiple Skills for more complex work. Neither description establishes that one feature inherently produces better answers.

The distinction is about reuse and packaging, not a demonstrated difference in answer quality. Google’s Gems guide and Skills guide describe these respective functions.

How do you customize each one?
Customize a Gem as a dedicated helper
For a Gem, write clear, detailed instructions for its recurring task or expertise, preview its responses, and save it. Gemini can help rewrite or expand the instructions. You can add knowledge files; to use Drive files, Keep Activity must be on and Google Workspace must be connected to Gemini Apps. Build a Skill as reusable instructions and context
Google documents several creation routes: ask Gemini in chat to create a Skill, start from a prefilled or blank template, or upload a file or folder. For an upload, SKILL.md must be at the root of the folder or archive; optional reference files can accompany it. Google’s current guide lists a 100 MB total upload limit and says scripts that require internet access are unsupported. Scripts also cannot perform actions or requests on external websites. These are Skill upload and execution rules, not the same file constraints as Gems.
After creating a Skill, you can select it for a task or leave it turned on for possible automatic use. Automatic application is limited to Skills that are turned on; you can deactivate or reactivate them in Skills settings. If you replace a Skill with files, upload the Skill and its reference files again. Google’s Skills help page covers creation, supported files, and use.

Who can use Skills, and where?
Google’s Skills help page describes a gradual rollout for personal Google Accounts. It currently requires users to be at least 18 and to have Keep Activity on; work and school accounts are excluded for now. The page lists the Gemini web app, Gemini mobile, and Gemini for Mac as supported locations. Availability can vary during the rollout.
The same help page notes two client-specific limitations: manually created Skills may not save in the mobile app, and Skills with uploaded files cannot be edited in the mobile or Mac app. For those cases, Google directs users to create or edit in Gemini web, or to use conversational creation where applicable. Because these are live-product details, check the current Skills availability and troubleshooting guidance before relying on a particular app workflow.
Access rules differ between the features: Google’s Gem guide says a personal-account user must be at least 13, or the applicable age in their country, while Skills currently require users to be 18+. Some Gem features differ on mobile. Google says Skills do not require a Google AI subscription; subscription-dependent Gemini Spark tasks and schedules are separate features.

What changes when Gems become Skills?
Google’s transition help says the move from Gems to Skills starts in November 2026. As of October 3, 2026, this is an announced upcoming transition, not a completed migration. Google says it will automatically recreate Gems as Skills when Gems are removed. It also documents a manual route for people who want to recreate a Gem as a Skill sooner.

- Create a Skill and use those details to reproduce its guidance.
- Add any knowledge files through the Skill upload or replace workflow.
Google’s transition page explains this manual recreation route and upcoming transition. Its guidance describes recreating instruction fields and adding files, but does not promise that every file, setting, or usage behavior will transfer identically. Keep copies of important instructions and knowledge files, and consult the live transition page as the announced date approaches.

Choose a Gem when you want a familiar, dedicated helper
A Gem fits a recurring task when you prefer to open one customized helper and keep its instructions and relevant knowledge together. If you already use Gems, Google’s announced transition does not mean you need to stop using them before November 2026.

Try a Skill when you want reusable, mix-and-match guidance
A Skill is a better fit to explore if you want to select reusable guidance for different tasks, let Gemini apply a turned-on Skill when relevant, or combine instructions into a multi-step workflow. That flexibility is useful only if Skills are available on your account and work in the client you use.
There is no documented comparative effectiveness result showing that a Skill will answer better than an equivalent Gem. The practical decision is whether you want a dedicated helper or reusable instructions that can be selected, automatically applied, and composed.
