You can recreate a Gemini Gem as a reusable Gemini skill by copying its name and instructions into a new skill, then bringing over any knowledge files it uses. Google also plans to migrate remaining Gems into draft skills, but the timing depends on your account type, so you can create one manually now rather than wait.
What to preserve from your Gem
A Gem is a named custom assistant with instructions and optional knowledge files. A Gemini skill is a reusable set of instructions and additional context for a specific task; Google says skills can be invoked directly or automatically when relevant, and combined with other skills. Google’s Gems guidance and skills guidance describe the two features.

Copying only the prompt may leave out context the Gem relied on. Before you change or replace it, capture the Gem’s exact name and full instruction text, and identify and download every knowledge file attached to it. Google’s transition guidance specifically includes downloading a Gem’s knowledge files.

- Open the Gem. Record its name and all instructions, including formatting preferences, constraints, and the task it is meant to handle. Note which attached files it uses.
- Download its knowledge files. Keep the original files somewhere accessible before starting the new skill. The files may contain reference material that the instruction text alone does not capture.
- Open Gemini’s Skills page and select Create manually. Enter the Gem’s name, a description of what the skill does, and its instructions, then create the skill. Google’s skill creation page documents this manual route.
- Add reference files to the skill. Follow Google’s documented file workflow: download the newly created skill, add the Gem’s knowledge files, and upload the skill package. The upload feature accepts a root-level
SKILL.md, a folder, or a.zipwithSKILL.mdin its main folder. - Review and edit the uploaded skill. Check that its instructions and files are present. Try representative prompts to see whether it behaves as expected; this is a practical check, not a Google-stated requirement.
Google’s manual migration instructions appear in its Gems-to-skills transition help; package and editing details are in Create and manage skills for Gemini Apps.

Prepare a SKILL.md package when uploading
For the documented upload route, skill metadata belongs in a SKILL.md file at the root of the project. The skill name inside that file must use lowercase words separated by hyphens, such as meeting-notes. Put any supporting reference files alongside it in the package and upload the folder or a ZIP with SKILL.md in its main folder.
- Google lists a total upload limit of 100 MB for the documented skill upload feature.
- Supported reference formats include text, code, configuration, selected web/build, and media formats; consult Google’s skill help for the current format list.
- Internet-dependent scripts are not supported by this upload feature.
Google describes the skill format as open and Markdown-based, but that does not establish that every AI tool can run every Gemini skill or its supporting files. Treat this as a Gemini skill package unless another platform documents compatibility.

Should you create the skill now or wait for migration?
Google says remaining Gems will be automatically recreated as skills over time; its Workspace transition guidance calls these “draft skills.” Automatic migration may save manual setup, but inspect the resulting instructions and files instead of assuming they transferred exactly. Manual recreation is the direct option if you want to work with the skill before your account’s migration.
Dates differ by audience and product surface. Google’s personal Gemini Apps transition help says the transition starts in November 2026. The Workspace transition page, last updated September 30, 2026, says Gems will be replaced by skills in 2027, with retirement no sooner than March 1, 2027 for business and enterprise and no sooner than June 1, 2027 for education. Google also says skill availability is rolling out by account and surface, so these dates should not be treated as one universal removal date.

Skill availability is rolling out by account and product surface. If the Skills page or manual creation option is missing, confirm you are signed into the account where you expect to use the feature and check Google’s current skill help for availability. Do not assume a date for another account type applies to yours.
