Yes. Gemini can help organize files in Google Drive by suggesting folders for loose files or, in a separate workflow, moving a small number of files after you review an action preview. In the dedicated “Suggest file moves” flow, Gemini recommends destinations; you choose what to move and confirm the change.
Choose the right way to organize files with Gemini
Drive offers two distinct Gemini workflows. Use “Suggest file moves” for a broader cleanup of loose files and possible new folders. Use Ask Gemini when you want to move up to five specified files into an existing folder, or create a folder by name. For predictable filing that you want to control yourself, use Drive’s manual tools.

| Manual Drive tools | Direct, predictable filing and naming | You choose the folder and move or drag the files yourself. |
Use “Suggest file moves” for a broader cleanup
Google documents this dedicated workflow for Drive on the web in English. It can identify eligible loose files and propose destinations, including folders Gemini suggests creating. Google says, “Gemini will not move any files without your permission.”
- On a computer, open drive.google.com and open My Drive or a folder. If eligible loose files are available, look for Suggest file moves.
- Select Suggest file moves to see Gemini’s proposed groupings and destinations.
- Review the proposals. You can ask for a grouping rule such as “Group these by year,” adjust how many new folders to create, shorten or rename a suggested folder, change a destination, or select individual files.
- Choose the files you want to move and select Move files.
- Review the confirmation and select Create and move to complete the move.
Google lists PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Microsoft Office files, images, videos with transcripts, and shortcuts as eligible items. You need Editor access to the files. A rejected suggestion is suppressed for that file-and-folder pair for 30 days, so it may not reappear immediately while you refine your organization.

Undo a mistaken move
After a move, Drive’s confirmation message offers Undo. Google also documents Ctrl+Z on Windows and Command+Z on Mac. Undo reverses the move but does not delete any folders created in the process.
Use Ask Gemini for a small, explicit move
This is separate from the “Suggest file moves” screen. In Ask Gemini, prompt it to move up to five files into an existing folder. Review the action preview card, then select Move and check the confirmation. Google warns that ownership and access may change when files are moved, so verify permissions before approving the action.

- Interface: The dedicated “Suggest file moves” workflow is documented for Drive web in English, not as a mobile workflow.
- Access: Editor access is required for files in the dedicated suggestion flow. For Ask Gemini moves, review permissions because moving a file can affect ownership and access.
- Plan: Gemini in Drive requires an eligible Workspace or Google AI plan. Eligibility varies; consult Google’s live plan information rather than assuming every account includes it.
- Accuracy: Recommendations are based on file contents, organizing patterns, and general organization practices. Check both the proposed folder and the files assigned to it before confirming. Google also notes that Gemini output may be inaccurate or unsupported; its Drive overview includes feedback controls.
Organize files manually when you want full control
Google Drive’s standard tools let you name and move files without AI suggestions. Google recommends short, meaningful names; optional dates or numbering; folders and subfolders; folder colors; and descriptions. To move an item, select it and use Organize > Move, or drag it to a folder. If you do not have permission to move an item, Drive may create a shortcut in the destination instead.
