An MCP server is not production-ready just because it speaks the protocol. Before exposing tools to real users, private data, or consequential actions, verify the tool contract, enforce authorization in the server, secure the deployment, test real and invalid calls, and establish a plan for monitoring and change.
1. Define and verify each tool’s contract
For every tool, document its purpose, required and optional inputs, expected results, possible errors, and whether it reads data or changes state. Treat all tool inputs as untrusted: validate them in the server and reject malformed, out-of-range, or unauthorized values.

Check schemas against behavior
- Compare the advertised schema with the inputs the implementation actually accepts.
- Run representative calls and invalid-input cases; verify the resulting data and errors match the contract.
- Review tool instructions and metadata for claims that could mislead a client about the tool’s effects.
OpenAI Developers recommends marking readOnlyHint true only when a tool cannot change state, and using destructiveHint to describe irreversible or difficult-to-reverse behavior. These annotations can help clients make decisions, but they do not validate inputs or authorize access. Those controls belong in the server.

2. Put identity and authorization in the server
For tools that access private data or act for a user, authenticate each request and authorize that user for the specific operation and resource. OpenAI Developers states: “Enforce authorization in the MCP server for every request; never rely on the model to decide whether a user has access.” An IP allowlist or a model’s judgment is not a substitute for request-level authorization.

Scope credentials and sensitive data
- Use credentials scoped to the user and task rather than broad, shared access wherever the system supports it.
- Separate read and write permissions when the operation requires different levels of access. AWS highlights token isolation, scoped-down credentials, and separate read/write authorization as enterprise security concerns; these are AWS recommendations, not protocol guarantees.
- Keep access tokens, secrets, and unnecessary personal data out of tool metadata, results, and logs.
- Require a confirmation step for consequential writes when the client workflow calls for one; do not treat confirmation as a replacement for authorization.
3. Choose a deployment that fits the workload
Assess the runtime and its dependencies against the server’s network, data, and operational requirements. A deployment choice should account for streaming behavior, request latency and cold starts, access to required data stores, data residency, secret management, observability, rollback, and ongoing operational overhead. The available guidance does not establish a universal best hosting provider or architecture.
Set production controls
- Store production credentials in the hosting environment’s secret-management system, not in source code or tool definitions.
- Configure the authorization server and redirect behavior required by the integration.
- Set timeouts for the server and for expensive or external dependencies. Apply rate limits appropriate to users and tools, and decide how the service will handle overload.
- Ensure logs do not expose tokens or sensitive tool results. Provide logging, tracing, alerts, and enough context to investigate failures without recording unnecessary private data.
- Confirm that the deployment supports the required network access, data residency, and compliance controls.
- Plan versioning and rollback before a change reaches users.
OpenAI’s public plugin-submission guidance requires a stable, publicly reachable HTTPS endpoint using Streamable HTTP in that submission context. That requirement should not be generalized into a universal rule for every MCP server. AWS’s broader hosting guidance organizes decisions around security, operational excellence, reliability, performance efficiency, and cost optimization; its examples include per-user and per-tool rate limits, load shedding, tool-selection accuracy metrics, and golden datasets for regression testing.

4. Confirm protocol and client compatibility
Check the protocol version supported by each client, server, and SDK before adopting version-specific behavior. A release can change deployment assumptions even when the application’s tools appear unchanged.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The MCP maintainers’ release-candidate post dated July 28, 2026 describes a stateless protocol core that removes the initialization handshake and the Mcp-Session-Id protocol session. In that release-candidate design, requests can reach any server instance without sticky routing or a shared session store at the protocol layer. The post also describes Mcp-Method and Mcp-Name routing headers, ttlMs and cacheScope metadata for list and resource-read results, trace-context propagation, authorization hardening, and a formal deprecation policy. The maintainers explicitly identify breaking changes, so confirm compatibility rather than assuming these changes are already supported throughout your stack.
Keep application state explicit
Removing protocol-level session state does not remove state your application needs between calls. The release post describes passing an explicit application handle, such as an identifier, as an ordinary tool argument. Decide what state belongs to the application, how it is authorized, and how it is passed across calls; do not rely on a protocol session unless the versions in your stack support it.

- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
5. Check the selected SDK’s deployment requirements
SDK guidance is implementation-specific. The MCP Python SDK’s deployment documentation describes several requirements teams using that SDK should verify; do not assume the same defaults apply to other language SDKs.
- Hosts and origins: configure explicit allowed hosts and origins when serving behind a real hostname.
- Reverse proxies: configure proxy-header handling when TLS terminates at a proxy in front of the application.
- Multiple instances: for request-state retries routed between instances, the Python SDK documentation describes sharing keys and using the same server name. Without the required shared state, a different worker may reject the request state.
- Notifications: if change notifications must cross processes, implement a shared subscription bus.
- Application server: provide worker management, health routes, timeouts, and graceful shutdown in the application server; the SDK documentation assigns these production responsibilities to that layer.
6. Inspect the running endpoint and exercise its behavior
Test the endpoint that will run in production, not only local code paths. OpenAI’s deployment guidance recommends inspecting initialization, server instructions, tool lists, schemas, annotations, authentication, results, and errors.

OpenAI also recommends exercising direct, indirect, edge-case, and out-of-scope requests from the use-case inventory. A successful connection alone does not establish that a tool behaves correctly or enforces access properly.

A March 2026 paper by Vasundra Srinivasan describes one enterprise MCP deployment involving an employee-facing cloud resource limit workflow; the client organization is redacted. The case report groups failure modes around server contracts, user context, timeouts, errors, and observability, and proposes mechanisms for identity-scoped routing, timeout allocation, and machine-readable error recovery. It is a single case report and set of proposals, not a representative survey or an MCP maintainer requirement.
Protect compatibility during updates
- Keep published tool names and schemas backward compatible where practical; prefer additive changes over breaking existing contracts.
- Rerun the evaluation set after changing tool metadata, schemas, instructions, or implementation behavior.
- Document the deployed protocol, client, and SDK versions so compatibility can be checked during upgrades.
- Prepare a rollback path and versioning approach before deploying changes.
AWS also identifies a governance risk: outdated local MCP servers can remain in use with known vulnerabilities when there is no systematic enforcement. Centralized governance and usage tracking can help teams understand which agents accessed data, with what permissions, and when; this is AWS guidance, not an automatic capability of MCP.
