If Gboard suddenly stops entering capital letters, first check whether Shift changes the keyboard’s displayed case, then restart your device and update Gboard. If the problem continues, Google recommends clearing the app’s cache; clearing its data is a later step that resets Gboard to its default state. Google’s guidance covers general Gboard problems and does not identify a confirmed cause for this particular symptom.
Check whether Shift or one text field is the problem
- Tap Shift once. Google documents a single Shift tap to capitalize the next letter. Watch whether the keyboard’s displayed letter case changes.
- Try caps lock. Double-tap Shift to turn caps lock on; tap Shift again to turn it off.
- Compare another app or text field. If capitals work elsewhere, the issue may be limited to the original app or field. This is a practical way to narrow down where the behavior occurs, not a diagnostic test prescribed by Google.
Google’s Gboard keyboard instructions explain Shift and caps lock. They do not diagnose a nonresponsive Shift key.

Try the least disruptive fixes first
- Restart your device.
- Update Gboard. Google notes that updates can include bug fixes and improvements. Check Google Play for an available update.
These are Google’s initial general troubleshooting steps in its Gboard troubleshooting guide.
Clear Gboard’s cache, then consider resetting its data
Clear cache
- Open Android Settings.
- Tap Apps, then select Gboard. You may need to tap an option such as See all apps first.
- Open Storage and cache and tap Clear cache.
Android menu names and locations vary by device manufacturer and version. Clearing the cache is a reasonable next step if restarting and updating did not help.

Clear data or storage only if the problem persists
From Gboard’s app information screen, open Storage and cache and tap Clear storage or Clear data, depending on the label shown. Google says this resets Gboard to its default state, so expect its settings to be reset.
If the problem started after a Gboard update
If the timing strongly suggests the problem began immediately after an update, Google documents uninstalling Gboard updates from the app information screen. This is a rollback option, not evidence that a particular release caused the issue.

Google also suggests force-stopping and reopening Gboard, or reinstalling it from Google Play, for continuing problems. If Gboard is your only installed keyboard, install a secondary keyboard before removing or reinstalling it so you can still enter text.

If capitals change automatically rather than Shift failing
A different problem is text changing automatically as you type—for example, unwanted automatic capitalization or other text corrections. Google recommends turning off Smart compose or Auto-capitalization under Gboard’s Text correction settings when automatic changes are unwanted. These settings address text alterations; Google does not present them as a fix for a Shift key that fails to respond.
When to report the problem
If the keyboard still will not enter capitals after troubleshooting, submit feedback or a bug report through Google’s Gboard help options. Google does not state a response time or guarantee a fix.

Is this a confirmed widespread Gboard bug?
Google’s published troubleshooting instructions describe general recovery steps, not a confirmed cause, affected release, device model, or Android version for sudden capitalization failures. Individual reports of Shift or capitalization trouble do not establish how many people are affected or whether their problems share a cause. The documented support material applies to Android phones and tablets; exact settings paths can vary across devices.
