The useful answer for players is that running time on its own settles very little: a 25-hour game can feel padded, and a 100-hour game can feel fully earned. The claim itself is harder to pin down. The original interview is not identifiable from the reporting available, so the speaker’s name, job, the date of the remarks, and the full context are unconfirmed. Treat the quoted wording as headline text, not a verified quotation.
What the headline claims, and what can be confirmed
The headline makes two separate statements. The first is a preference: shorter games are better than very long ones. The second is a qualifier that carries most of the weight: the shorter game has to be “good.” The argument depends on that word, because nobody disputes that a short game can be excellent or that a long one can be tedious.

Several details remain unverified:
- The speaker’s identity and former role at PlayStation
- When the remarks were made and where they were published
- Whether “good 20 to 25-hour games” is a direct quotation or a paraphrase written for the headline
- What the speaker was actually comparing, such as a specific franchise, a genre, or a general principle
Until those points are established, the headline should be read as a claim without a confirmed source. It does not show a shift in industry thinking, and it should not be used as evidence of what players as a whole prefer.

Why “100 hours” and “25 hours” measure different things
Game length is usually reported as a single number, but that number can hide two different experiences. The first is the main path: the story, campaign, or core objectives needed to reach an ending. The second is optional content, side activities, collectibles, and replayable systems that can extend play far beyond the ending.
#1 Best Overall
- Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, return for an exciting new adventure in the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise. Swing, jump, and utilize the new Web Wings to travel across Marvel’s New York, quickly switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales to experience different stories and epic new powers, as the iconic villain Venom threatens to destroy their lives, their city, and the ones they love.
- An evolution of the Spider-Man story: The incredible power of the symbiote forces Peter and Miles to face the ultimate test of strength, both inside and outside the mask, as they balance their lives, friendships, and their duty to protect those in need.
- Experience two playable Spider-Men: Quickly swap between both Spider-Men as you explore an expanded Marvel’s New York. Experience Peter’s new symbiote abilities and Miles’ explosive bio-electric venom powers, and discover upgradeable, high-tech equipment that enhances the combat experience for extensive gameplay depth and variety.
- Battle iconic Marvel Super Villains: Fight against a variety of new and iconic villains, including an original take on the monstrous Venom, the ruthless Kraven the Hunter, the volatile Lizard, and many more!
Main path versus optional content
A 2008 WIRED Q&A with Blizzard executive vice president of game design Rob Pardo discusses Diablo as a replayable game whose total time depends on how much optional content a player pursues. That interview is useful for the distinction it draws. It says nothing about the ex-PlayStation remarks in the headline.
The practical lesson is that a game listed at 100 hours may not require 100 hours to finish, and a game listed at 25 hours may have a long tail for players who want it. A single figure tells you little until you know which kind of time it measures.

Varied hours versus repeated hours
Length is only worth something if the hours change. Before judging a long game, ask whether the later stretches introduce new mechanics, locations, characters, or decisions, or whether they repeat the same loop with bigger numbers. A focused 20-hour game and a sprawling 100-hour game can both be well made or badly paced. The difference is whether each hour adds something.
An earlier example: Godfather II’s 15 to 25-hour target
The debate over shorter, tighter games is not new. In August 2008, VideoGamer reported that EA’s Redwood Shores studio had moved away from a 50 to 80-hour target for The Godfather II toward a 15 to 25-hour player experience. The report identifies Hunter Smith as the game’s executive producer and quotes him:

“Now I think our range for the player will be somewhere in the 15 to 25 hour experience.”
This is a separate speaker, game, and year from the headline. It shows that a developer once set a target for a shorter experience. It does not show how long players actually spent with the game, and it is not evidence for the ex-PlayStation remarks.

Where reader opinion stands
Discussion on platform forums tends to split along the same lines. In a Reddit thread on r/playstation, one commenter says they would rather play “four 25 hour games” than one long one, while others argue that a 100-hour game should “deserve” its time. The thread’s URL slug reads “removed,” so it may not be fully viewable. Either way, these are individual opinions from one discussion, not a poll, and they cannot say what most players prefer.

How to judge whether a long game is worth your time
If you are deciding between a shorter and a longer game, these steps are more reliable than the headline’s number:
Best Value
- READY, SET, WARP! Race across 24 tracks and warp to 15 CrossWorlds with Travel Rings, a unique gameplay mechanic that transports the iconic characters from the Sonic and SEGA universes into new dimensions. Use unpredictability to your advantage as you change the landscape of each race!
- RACE WITH THE BEST! Choose from 23 iconic Sonic characters, the largest roster of any Sonic racing game!
- MAKE IT YOURS: Mix and match between 45 unique original vehicles and 70 different gadgets to trick out your ride, level up your kart, and create the ultimate machine to match your racing style.
- GAIN THE ADVANTAGE WITH POWERFUL ITEMS! Dominate your opponents with 23 different items including returning favorites and all-new items like the Monster Truck!
- MULTIPLE WAYS TO PLAY: Gather with friends and play local split-screen in Grand Prix and the new party mode Race Park, compete against a community of players from around the world with up to 12 players online in World Match, or test your driving skills in Time Trials.
- Find out whether the listed length covers the main story, the full game, or a typical completion. Developer material and store pages often do not say which.
- Check whether the game has a clear endpoint, or whether the story and rewards continue indefinitely.
- Read reviews or player accounts from the mid-game, not just the opening hours, since pacing problems usually appear later.
- Decide what you want from the time: a complete story, a long-running system to master, or something to return to in short sessions.
| Measure | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Main-path length | Roughly how long the story or core objectives take | Whether those hours are good, or how much optional content exists |
| Full completion length | How long it takes to see most of the content | Whether the extra content is varied or repetitive |
| Replay or endless systems | How the game can extend beyond a first playthrough | When the game will stop feeling fresh for you |
The headline’s contrast is useful mainly as a prompt to ask what the hours contain. The number on its own is a weak guide.
